Aragon is my absolute favorite start in CK2. Lots of opportunities of intrigue, lands to conquer without repercussions, a great relationship with the Pope, and it is damned hard to boot (I love the challenge). I remember my first attempt with this start, rolling Sancho Ramirez of Aragon, and then conquering Zaragoza, moving my capital there, marrying to claim Barcelona and eventually getting Navarre, and finally unifying Spain by marrying into Castile. Then I hopped onto wikipedia because I knew absolutely nothing about Spanish history and was curious about the real Sancho Ramirez, only to find out that my playthrough of CK2 somehow almost EXACTLY mirrored what actually happened in real life. Like, the dates lined up closely on the major points of expansion, the same marriages happened, moving my capital to Zaragoza - EVERYTHING. Gave me the shivers, and makes you think that maybe those "simulation hypothesis" lunatics are onto something.

I was just about to say the same time. Similarly, the dialect of Castillian Spanish spoken in an around Barcelona, if I remember correctly, is a seseo dialect, so the would still be pronounced /s/. Now, if you listen to people in Madrid.. ;P Similarly, since Andorra's official language is Catalan, then "Urgell" is "supposed" to be pronounced /urˈʒeʎ/, with a "zh" sound for the , not a "hand 'g'", and a palatal lateral instead of plain old /l/ :P

It's also incorrect. Barcelona is in Catalonia, and they speak Catalan there. In contrary to Castillian Spanish, the 'c' and 's' are not lisped, ever. Furthermore, I have read that the Spanish dialect that is spoken in and around Barcelona doesn't do this either, as most Catalonians speak Spanish too as a second language, but use their own dialect.

"And yes, this is how Barcelona is actually pronounced" You're both right and wrong. It's pretty much BarTHelona in European Spanish. But in Catalan, the local language of Barcelona, it's pronounced it more like English speakers do. Also, it wasn't exactly like Aragon's king inherited Barcelona. The count of Barcelona was married with the princess of Aragon (when she was a toddler, which is a pretty interesting story on it's own). So the count of Barcelona became the King of Aragon, uniting both regions politically. Greetings from Catalonia, it's nice that you talk about our little tax haven neighbor

The king of aragon did inherited Barcelona, the Count of Barcelona became an hereditary title of the crown, the entire iberian peninsula did a poor job of integrsting territories which explains why its so divided even to this day, aragon was its separsted kingdom, valencia, mallorca, then the county of barcelona also had its own law and so on with the crown of castille doing the same thing with the kingdoms that were part of it, a massive lack of unity and centralization that led to the downfall of the spanish empire

Quator: First off, it should be noted that scope, UX, etc are _not_ technical issues by any stretch of imagination. Second, it should be noted that the priorities of a modder and those of a game developer _are almost nothing alike._ Every hour spent on a mod is an hour spent on a hobby; every hour spent on the actual game is an hour of salary, utilities, and other miscellaneous expenses, and hence needs to not only add more than it takes away _but also adds enough to the game to justify spending resources on it rather than anything else they could be spent on._ Do you spend, say, 20 man-hours coding in borders and whatnot for Andorra and 50 making all the assets required (both of which, incidentally, require _much_ higher quality standards than expected of a mod), or would those 70 man-hours be better spent on hunting for bugs and refining existing assets (or even adding other features more within the game's scope)? And that's assuming you left out the various intricacies added by the unusual political situation of Andorra, the Vatican, and most other nations on that scale, which would add far, far more man-hours of work than just adding another generic province and nation. Let me also explain the two examples of potential issues I specifically brought up (which are also the first two I thought of): Scope is, basically, what the game is expected to do. In the case of HOI4, the scope is _not_ to simulate _every_ polity in the world during WW2, but just to provide an approximate simulation of reality which is also engaging to play. Adding features beyond the intended scope of the game might seem like it's a net gain, but aside from the potential for design clutter to drag down the whole game, it's just not an efficient use of resources. Figure out what you want to do and do it as well as you can, don't tack on loads of extraneous bits. How about UX? It stands for User Experience, which is a vague umbrella term for everything from the interface to the gameplay loops to individual challenges. To narrow it down, I'd like to ask you something: How engaging is the process of conquering Lichenstein in the base game? It's glorified busywork for anyone trying to conquer Europe. Declare war, tweak the lines, and treat it as basically another province of the Low Countries. Imagine that, but worse, and also so weak as to not even be a remotely fun "Survive as X" challenge. Arguably, Lichenstein is on the wrong side of that barrier, but that's fine; having a nigh-impossible survival challenge isn't that big of a problem. Besides, Lichenstein is about the size of a HOI4 province. That isn't true for Andorra, nor the other four countries which Better States includes. Besides, how much is having half a dozen nigh-impossible survival challenges worth? Let's not forget that the actual game devs need to worry about performance and the like. Every minination is another AI making decisions, another array of every technology researched and effect accumulated, another cog which could contribute to forming an edge case.
@superstructure23

"Darn it, feudalism! Quit making my brain hurt!" is the best thing anyone has ever said about feudalism ever. Andorra's still not even simple after that. Andorra has no say at all in the election of the President of France, while people living in areas like French Guiana and Mayotte do have a say in who might become President because, as French citizens, they have the right to vote on the matter. This means that one of Andorra's co-princes is elected completely by a foreign population, some of who live in South America, Polynesia, Africa, etc. Because France :P

Tyler Aschen It’s coming back though. Young educated people are starting to use it more as the education system places great emphasis on learning Catalan. However you are right, at the moment it is spoken by about 50-60% of Catalonian residents whereas Castilian is spoken by 98%... i suspect it’s mostly old people who grew up not being allowed to learn Catalan + migrants from other Spanish regions who never learnt it

When France was occupied, was the bishop of Urgell the only prince of Andorra?
@wolv0223
6 жыл бұрын
Well, according to Wikipedia, the French head of state's title as prince was passed to *groan* Philippe Pétain. The collaborationist stooge that headed Vichy France AKA the French State. Since the French State was technically independent, if mostly under occupation, Petain was the leader of France and thus Co-Prince of Andorra (until the establishment of the Provisional Government in 1944, which is the point at which Wikipedia switches it so that De Gaulle is the Co-Prince). Makes sense that Vichy France, all though not acknowledged by France as a legitimate regime, would be used by Andorra. Even if it was a German puppet half occupied by the Germans until it was fully occupied. It was either that government, or Free France's government in exile. And it's probably better to not anger the Nazis right next to you. You know, unless the true Frenchmen happen to come back, kick out the Nazis, and establish a Provisional Government over metropolitan France in opposition to the Vichy regime that's now in exile ;)

1:33 well, technically (I'm sorry) that's the way Spaniards pronounce it in most regions north of Andalusia (you know, the part with Granada and Malaga all the way in the south). The local Catalan community however, pronounces it differently depending on the dialect; there are two main dialects of Catalan (if you don't count Valencian in the south) and the variety spoken in and around Barcelona pronounces every single vowel as a schwa except for the o, because that syllable is emphasized and does not have that sort of 'lisp' that characterises so many Castilian dialects as well as the standard European Spanish vernacular. This results in the following IPA transcription: [bəɾsəˈlonə]

As someone from Barcelona: It is, indeed, pronounced in the "English way", with an 's' sound instead of an Spanish 'c' sound (as it is Catalan, and we don't have that 'c' sound). Therefore, the correct form to pronounce would be something in between, something like: "Barsælona"

In the end, it boiled down to centuries of luck. There were thousands of other counties, duchies, and princedoms that did get gobbled up, regardless of whether they were within a country or on the border - as you note with Navarre - through marriages, inheritances and other political happenstances.

Actually the way that Americans say Barcelona with their accent is the correct way, because Barcelona is a name in Catalan and it isn't Spanish, and the vowel of C in Spanish doesn't exist for the same C in Catalan.

I liked how you used the Spanish ( or I should say Castillian) pronunciation for Barcelona. Some people don't get that Spanish is, like Catalan, a native language of Barcelona (and all Catalonia) and that everyone is bilingual. Those who maintain that Catalan is the only native language of Catalonia are just trying to sell some snake oil, because in that region of Spain both languages developed simultaneously and side by side. As a matter of fact, Castillian became the wider lingua franca which eventually grew to dominate the entire peninsula. As for Andorra, it's interesting how they too are perfectly bilingual in Catalan and Spanish, and often times they also speak French. But the official language there is definitely Catalan, although you would never know it because everyone is usually speaking in Spanish especially when you're a tourist. Great video!

castillian evolved in the leon region in the north of spain. Catalan evolved in the north of catalonia. The fact that people speeck both dosn't mean that it had evolved there.

Roby mccferry - You miss the point, which is that both Castilian and Catalan are native languages of today's Catalonia. In other words, Castilian was not an intruder, nor was there ever a time when Catalan was the sole language of Catalonia.
