I've noticed that most musical theater fans dislike La La Land, while people who usually hate movie musicals love La La Land. I wonder what the reason for this dissonance is.
@AUMOTmusic
Жыл бұрын
Biggest issue in my opinion is that this movie is trying to work in the musical theatre/musical movie idiom without actually doing a great job at a lot of the key elements: the dancing is mediocre, the singing is often not great, the lyrics are Pasek & Paul's usual garbage, and the music is trying to force modern pop harmony into Great American Songbook stylings. The filmmaking is very good and the leads' acting performances are superlatives, but all those weaknesses pile up and are more obvious to musical fans

I will preface by saying I’ve actually never seen this movie in full ever. But I would say that in some ways instead of a musical it feels like a movie with music. Like the way old Disney movies weren’t musicals but instead had 1 or 2 songs and that was it (and yes I understand there are more than that in this movie). But it still does just feel like a movie with music rather than a musical. Personally as a musical fan I just had no interest in seeing this music so I have no harsh feelings toward it

@@AUMOTmusic as much as i'm kind of an outlier because i'm not a theater kid(heavy metal guitar,versatile bass player)city of stars is really the only part of it that works,and it works amazingly but unfortunately its constantly shoved down our throats for most of the movie when it really should have just been at the end. the full ending version still makes me cry, but if the rest of the movie had the quality of that last 10 minutes it would have been much better.

I think it's mostly that La La Land lovingly satirizes the old style of musical like Singing in the Rain and kind of winks at the camera to be like "oh see that's the point is that modern life is so more embedded in shades of grey so they don't get their happy ending and the singing and dancing is this 90% quality, Ryan Gosling isn't supposed to be a knock you over with how good he is at singing!" and that's awesome I really like it but actual live theater has evolved past that and made fun of it or subverted that anyway... so it's nothing new but if you have a special fondness of what La La land subverts it's even more polarizing.

Like everything its paying homage to, I can just go and watch the better version instead. In ten years (tbh even now) I don't see anyone pointing to La La Land as one of best 2000s musicals. There's something about WSS, Singing in the Rain, An American in Paris that this movie just does not have. It feels like the entire runtime is convincing you it has IT and it just doesn't. It's devoid of spark but at least Ryan Gosling was cool

Although La La Land is my favorite movie of all time, I can agree in the respect that Whiplash being an almost complete 180 from this can put people off. It’s kind of interesting being that Whiplash was made in order to actually fund La La Land even though they are both such incredible stand-alone films. Love the commentary as always, much love and support SAG!

This is why it's so weird that people follow everything a director does, as if everything he does has to be similar in a way. Yeup and that's why I really enjoy it. It has a different vibe that sets apart from many musicals and is simultaneously a love-letter to Los Angeles, a city that for all its drawbacks is near and dear to me. John Legend's character made the most sense out of everyone in this movie. Jazz, like everything else, has to evolve, and we must change with it. Yet, Sebastian joining Keith's band makes it seem like he's selling out.

Sebastian was selling out because he personally hated what he was making and thought it was bastardizing the art he loved. John Legend makes a good point but Seb fundamentally disagrees with the direction and therefore only does it for the money hence he’s selling out

The issue is that in real life, jazz is evolving and sounding modern, and it doesn't sound anything like what's portrayed in this movie. Being in a pop band isn't "jazz evolving" it's just not continuing to play jazz.

Personally speaking as a filmmaker and musical theatre lover, I felt the same way as Eric when I saw this film. La La Land is phenomenal on a technical level, the cinematography, direction, and performances are great. But I never really cared for the music, the song sequences, and the story for that matter. Unpopular Opinion, I think Steven Spielberg's adaptation of West Side Story was infinitely better than La La Land. It felt like an old school music with a few modern updates, but stayed authentic to the genre it wanted to be. While still being a technical marvel with its direction, cinematography, production design, and song compositions. I think the issue for me is that La La Land is a film that tries to emulate elements from older musical films, but the music and modernized setting just doesn't catch my interest. People like to shit on The Greatest Showman, but I'll always prefer to listen to "This is Me" over "City of Stars."

I agree, the movie is underwhelming and overhyped. It's not a bad movie, but it doesn't embrace being a musical and the plot itself became frustrating for me personally. I get that the point is to give a realistic depiction of the artist's journey in hollywood, but when your movie also has people breaking out in to song and dance periodically, it'd be nice to have a more satisfying resolution to the main characters' relationship.

*I liked the ending* and how they helped each other accomplish their dreams… but tbh the songs were boring - dance choreography was cool tho.

I love La La Land but there’s no contest in which film is better when compared to Whiplash. La La Land is more of a ‘movie-musical’ then a musical film, but Chazelle fails to adapt the storytelling spine that makes musicals successful. The film starts on a strongpoint with a “Welcome to Town” number in the opening, but immediately cuts loose the energy to focus on the filmic gritty stuff that while entertaining in a cinematic context, leaves the musical side feeling unbalanced. Sebastian’s I Want song doesn’t occur until the end of the First Act while Mia’s is essentially the climax of the film. Before that point, we’re left basically walking through patchwork scenes that instruct us on ‘Who’ the characters are without really showing us why they do things. It’s like La La Land has one half of a really fantastic, showstopping musical and one half of an intense character study a la Whiplash that Chazelle tries to fuse together. Unfortunately I think he has actually carried this error into Babylon. Babylon tries to be a capper analysis of the entire structure of Hollywood and also an ensemble analysis while struggling to stick the landing on either.

I thought La La Land was overall kinda boring, I didn’t rlly care for any of the songs, and I found their relationship dynamic/drama so frustrating most of the time. My, usually very stoic, bf loves this movie and cries every time he sees it tho soo..idk 🤷🏻♀️

Felt bored by La La Land as well. It wasn't my cup of tea. The soundtrack was amazing for the most part.
