the problem is how venture capital and investment works today, they invest A LOT(too much actually), make a service too good to be true, make people get used to it, and then demand crazy returns and growth rates for years and years. This is very destructive and create companies that we hate and predatory businesses, because later they have to make up for this over investment and over expectation and destroy their own product, this happens to every company specially the tech ones

It's true. They also try to create monopolies in industries that aren't structured that way. This leads to Wall Street getting over-excited and thinking that one business will rule a sector forever and blowing the stock price 'to the moon' - which turns out to be wrong when all the competitors turn up. Tesla is the biggest example currently......the auto market will never belong to only one company. Big stock crash coming.

To me, the biggest cause for Netflix's downfall is simple: Their biggest strength used to be that they were a one-stop shop for streaming all kinds of movies and tv shows. Then other streaming services came out and all those movies and shows got spread across 20 different platforms with their own subscription fee. Then Netflix decided to raise its price in response to having less content

Netflix successfully created the subscription streaming trend. Everyone was hooked on to it as it was the best. Now there is Disney+, Hulu, HBO max, Peacock. No one wants to pay for all of them. Original content was great on Netflix as it was the only service. Now they are all distributed across many services. Then there's profitability. The need to keep consistently profitable and also beat the competition is very hard. If you're the only service, you can dictate terms. With many other players, its not that way anymore and content creators can literally "shop" around for better deals. Netflix has also been trying to increase the membership costs slowly to the point where people are like NAH that's too much to keep paying. And here we are.

They take years to add the next season to a show, they start a show with mid seasons, so you only have season 9 to 11 for example. Most people think that the most popular shows on Netflix are originals like stranger things and squid game, when in reality it’s classics like friends, the office and Seinfeld that dominate watch times. This is because classic shows get rewatched in the background while people work from home,make dinner etc. To their credit Netflix used this to brilliant effect, mixing classic content with new originals, but as licenses go back to their parent companies, Netflix has to spend outrageous amounts of money of content that isn’t always top shelf, leading to a dip in quality. They also have to depend on subscriber count to green light sequels to movies and tv, which is why many good shows only see one season, or don’t get any marketing, as opposed to hbo max and Disney whose market their shows and dominate sunday and Friday nights of many house holds. They should act more like a production company and less like a tech company.

@segafreak2000

It depends a bit on the community, I'd argue. For example, this is only a small, small slice of Netflix's userbase, but take the users who primarily use it to watch the few anime that Netflix has licensed. For that, weekly releases are the standard model, and the community is sort of build around it, where weekly releases are used to generate hype over a longer amount of time. And it works - discussion threads for episodes generate a decent amount of discussion, and that's not even accounting for all the other stuff like memes and other fan content that spawns in between. Last year, Netflix actually got the streaming rights for one series with a particular active community - JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Think what you will about the fans (personally I think the louder ones are very obnoxious), but it's been an extremely active community. Then Netflix got the newest part of the series, released it as a batch, and... dead silence. There was engagement on the first few days after the release dropped, and then literally nothing. It was as if it completely dropped off the radar. Which is the worst state a fanbase could be in. That community is probably excited about weekly releases the most - simply because that's already the standard, and Netflix is the one provider that's deviating from that. But it's still just a small slice of the people who use Netflix, of course, so that decision wasn't influenced by that slice at all in all likelihood.

I've tried every streaming service there is and spent more time searching for content to watch than actually watching anything. Movies and series take a massive time commitment. I noticed i literally just watch KZitem on my tv 99% of the time and just got premium and I've happy. The commercials especially during the elections give me anxiety. It felt like every 39 seconds an ad going candidate A is amazeballs followed immediately by nah candidate A is a malevolent demon reincarnated 🙁 tv is largely background noise for me and having KZitem on auto play is great. Videos aren't extremely long typically and i can find something to watch instantly constantly

Netflix still has over 200 million subscribers. They only lost a couple of million subscribers. Netflix would really be in trouble if they lost 10-20 maybe 50-100 million subscribers, then they would be in trouble. Netflix currently only has subscribers fees for revenues. The ad supported tier will be a second revenue source. Netflix has more competition then in the past. Netflix is still very popular international in countries outside the US. Netflix will finally have HD 720p in the one screen $9.99 USD plan. The ad supported plan will also be in 720p.

@@gladiatorgamer9502 Your "$20 dvd or buy $10 subsciption" over simplifies the over all problem. For my family at least we spend significantly more money then 10$ on subscription services. On average we spent about $1535.28 per year ($127.94 per month) on streaming services to satiate our entertainment for on-demanding streaming content. This figure excludes our subscription to KZitem Premium, as my significant other refuses to let that one go because they watch a good amount of KZitem videos and has a large distain for the ads. We were paying that for one or two original content shows from several different streaming services. After re-evaluating our streaming habits we found that we could do a upfront investment of $929.99 in software and hardware to enable us to maintain our own personal catalog without resorting to piracy. This left us with $605.29 in the first year alone to spend on those 20$ dvd (in reality you can get 4K UHD for about 20$-30$, with a DVD coming closer to 5-15$; so about 50 items in the first year and 77 items each year after). We've found that the majority of the time we rewatch the same series over and over, and for movies we also watch multiple times. Another thing we found is that we only watch shows about 2 times per month minimum, but generally no more than 1.5 times a week (so a max of 6 viewing sprints a month). This indicates that of the $127.94 we were on average "spending" ~$21.33 per viewing. If instead we bought the DVD/Blu-rays we would save $1.33, and that is not including our rewatching. So if you are asking if I would rather spend the money on content that I have more control over vs being provided a service I don't get much say in... I would rather save my money and have more control over mine (and my families) content. The nice part is here soon we plan on extending it to include OTA content with a antenna+DVR setup. Super excited for that addition, because about 70$ of that 127.94 is for KZitem TV (as it gave us sometime live to watch).

I feel like Netflix now is what I say I want/like to other people to be "cool" but not what I really want/like. It's cool to say you are into really deep and complex shows and to say "insert foreign country" shows/movies are so much better than the American ones. But at the end of the day I find myself enjoying simple American shows and movies even if I would rather enjoy deep foreign ones (for the bragging rights alone). I had Netflix back when you could get DVDs and streaming (yes I am old). It was a cool concept and a way to both cut out Blockbuster (the new movie DVDs) and cable if you didn't like sports (the streaming which basically consisted of cable shows and old movies). Now it is one of many streaming services, and one that find myself watching less than others.

The case for Netflix: good points. It is a systemic problem in the US. We have the figurative Wild West in regard to content and the rights to stream something. The explosion of live streaming sites it detrimental to us, consumers. It forces us to maintain a bundle of subscriptions, potentially amassing to hundreds of dollars monthly. Of course most people do not follow hat path, and my bet is, most of these streaming services will vanish in a foreseeable future. I for example venture to a public library with its tens of thousands of DVD's and supplement there for the shows which have vanished from Netflix and/or Amazon prime.

Netflix was great when I was in college and could binge to my heart's content their flagship programs. Nowadays I have a full time job though and I find myself barely ever using my Netflix sub. I've already watched most of the content that appeals to me, and most of the new content involves a lot more of a time and energy investment to get into, which working full time is a lot more of a barrier for me than it used to be. It almost feels like to me they collected their user data on what me and other users watch at a different time in my life, and haven't updated the content they make and recommend to me based on my changing watching habits. I dont have anything against Netflix and dont mind "woke" content that's not targeted to someone like me, I just cant find much I want to watch on Netflix anymore.

I hardly ever download anything though, i just don't watch TV, movies, media or any of that silly crap. @@LogicallyAnswered Nah, not for me at least, i'm not missing much, i 'cut the cord' about a decade before that phrase was coined lol. But a LOT of companies are shooting themselves in the foot by having such things as streaming only and always online requirements like even a LOT of single player games have as DRM. You know exactly when i resort to gaming or watching any media content like the occasional Rick and Morty? It's when there's storms or power outages and i've got no internet for a day or so. It's not just dependent on rural broadband, but also on the stability of the grid feeding the broadband providers. When the grid power goes out and the backup power/generators on the cell towers are dead i wouldn't be able to play these games with this invasive DRM. And the grid goes down often, several times a year, if it rains, the wind blows too much, or too little, or the sun shines or maybe a squirrel farts and the whole rickety house of cards tumbles to the ground and it takes them sometimes days to build a new house of cards patchwork jenga tower of an infrastructure component. I'm off grid, i make my own power and it's way more reliable than people in town pay crazy prices for only to be left in the dark once or twice a month, with the possibility of it being days before things are back.
