It's funny seeing Scornful Egotist with the bad cards, as in Scourge draft you could actually use it as an easy way to get a high CMC card down, which went well with cards like Rush of Knowledge and Reward the Faithful. So it's not even all that bad in the right context!

I think my favourite bad card is Aquus Steed from Return to Ravnica as it is just terrible in so many ways. Not only is it another low power/toughness to CMC like most other bad cards (a 1/3 for 3U), it has the single worst activated ability I've seen in the form of 2U T: target creature gets -2/-0 until end of turn. So not only are you removing a blocker you're also spending vital mana on reducing 2 entire damage points; and worst of all, you already have blue cards in RTR that can do its job better: Need a blocker, use Hover Barrier, need a 4CMC creature? Use a Runewing. Insist on a 3CMC activated ability that blocks, you have Doorkeeper for that and it is half the mana cost! Thank you for reading this essay on why Aquus Steed is the worst.

24:23 FWIW, the Commander RC's statement that their rules and bans are "just suggestions and you should talk with your playgroup" is comically out of touch with the reality of the format they write rules for. Sure, a large percentage of Commander players are kitchen table players with a small group they can talk to about house bans and house rules, but they grossly underestimate the people playing with relative strangers at their local game stores, or playing with total strangers at big Magic events or similar. In those scenarios, I'm quite frankly not going to ask if they're cool with avoiding any of their decks which contain Command Tower, Sol Ring, Counterspell because they're too broken, any deck with a color identity of three or more, and also don't play Stax, Control, or Aggro. (To be clear, I'm fine playing against all these things and am being hyperbolic, but I've definitely seen house rule lists where I'm genuinely not clear how they even play Magic at all with everything they don't allow.) I'm going to ask if they think they've got something strong, casual, or somewhere in between, then pick a deck to match. Like I want to just grab a member the RC by the shoulders and tell them "believe it or not, there are people who are either too shy to ask their group to ban something in house for them, or are playing with people they don't know and the only common expectation they can reasonably bring to the table is the existing rules and bans." I have literally not met a single person in real life who thinks the RC's leaning on rule 0 is a valid stance. Magic as a community is just a different place from when these guys started playing and created their format, and it absolutely shows.

Why MTG makes bad cards Long answer: 1.- Teaching new players to recognize good cards by placing them in preconstructed decks hoping they will eventually come around to replacing them with better cards or cards that work in a cohesive way with the rest of the deck. 2.- Little snippets of lore and flavour you can play with enticing players to want to learn more about the world the game is based by collecting other cards. Plus an easy filler to add a theme to the factions of the game. 3.- A way to add variety to gameplay for other competitive formats such as limited. Short answer: MONEY BABYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Just use the YuGiOh style of limiting cards to 1 or 2 (or 3, in the case of MTG) to help fix cards that aren't broken enough to be banned but still are unhealthy for the game.

Some of the bad cards make me kinda dislike that draft is so prominent, cause you can sometimes see that the card could be way more interesting or cool, but it has been clearly overcosted just for the sake of draft players. Makes magic have the lamest boosters too, honestly. And while I am being negative, I also want to complain about the way mtg plans stuff way too early ahead, meaning that the point about game designers learning from their mistakes only starts to apply after like, three or four years in this game. Stuff like green blue getting bunch of really broken stuff set after set and white being consistently the worst color in the game for years now (other than in vintage cube) really show that. Thank you for the good video though, even if I personally think mtg could do with less cards being bad. Which it admittedly has worked on as of late.

On the topic of rewording cards for balancing them post printing: I remember that I was furious when I learned that "Eladamri, Lord of Leaves" had gotten both of his abilities reworded from "All Elves" into "Other Elf creatures" And he has not even been reprinted, you have no chance of knowing this unless you look up the card on Gatherer (or some other mtg card site)
@Spice8Rack
3 жыл бұрын
Yo I had no idea about that!
@Hyuuga2109
3 жыл бұрын
There's a good reason for that though : when Eladamri was printed, the Legendary supertype wasn't a thing for creatures, they just had creature type Legend. So at the time, Eladamri himself wasn't an Elf. He didn't boost himself with the "All Elves" ability. When the creature type mess was solved and Eladamri became an Elf himself, they HAD to change the text, otherwise he would have suddenly started boosting himself, which he isn't supposed to do. Funnily enough, this was a "change" that was precisely to KEEP the card's effect the same as it always was.
@Hyuuga2109
3 жыл бұрын
Oh, and in addition to the previous reply : considering you were upset about the Eladamri rewording, and seemed to consider it a nerf, this seems to indicate that you thought Eladamri was supposed to benefit himself (and probably unintentionally cheated with him a couple of times). No one could blame you for that, and this is a fantastic example of how the "Legend" type sucked donkey butt back then, by causing these kinds of unintuitive interactions.

This video is really cool and well put together. If I were to add anything it would be, as WOTC puts it, "bad cards, by definition, must exist", meaning that, if there's, say 5 doomblade-like cards, about 1 or 2 will be the "good ones" simply cus they are better than the others, as a deck can only have so many cars in it. And this happens with less obvious comparisons of cards.

Honestly, as a player who doesn’t have endless pockets full of money to spend on cards, the prominence of cards that are vanilla or I have text so bad it’s not funny cut into how efficiently my money gets spent on a game that I enjoy. If there’s a couple of vanilla creatures or generally bad creatures in my packs as I open them and in a sense my money is been wasted to teach new players simple concepts. And that’s my biggest problem when it comes to card games in “filler“ cards. They cost me, a veteran player, money to teach lessons to people who aren’t me

11:15 "As the old adage goes: One mans jank is another mans combo piece" This is one of the core design principles of MTG that continues to wow me from a game design standpoint. The games been going for almost 30 years, and in that time it's constantly trying to innovate and explore the game space. This process produces a lot of exotic and weird cards by necessity. The amazing part about MTG is that, despite his archive of weird tools the designers are still able to produce a relatively balanced, competitive and fun gameplay experience. Yes, there have been some mistakes and the ban list still grows. But that's just proof of the designers willingness to take risks and make game design innovations. The "jank" of these bad cards sometimes is just an unrecognized tool in the players toolbox. There might be a setting in the future (a new set or a new combo piece) that revives one of these so-called bad cards. Great video! I love your perspective, clear arguments and focus on the holistic game experience. Your point about flavor text and story telling is an important element that I think is often missed when discussing MTG design.

I've been saying for a while now that MTG should follow YGO's lead when it comes to banning cards. They have different levels of banned cards that clearly state how many copies you can have in your deck. Since they have a limit of 3 copies instead of 4, they go from banned (0 copies), limited (1 copy), semi-limited (2 copies), to unlimited (3 copies). This way something that's powerful can still exist in some capacity so long as it isn't too broken. Is it a perfect solution? No, but it smooths out the transition from unlimited to banned, and since MTG allows 4 copies per deck, that gives them another potential "level of banned".
@tankiegirl
Жыл бұрын
semi-limited is stupid though.
@andrewwalker6204
Жыл бұрын
@@tankiegirl sure, in a 3 copy game like YGO, going down to 2 copies isn't that big of a hit to consistency, but in a 4 copy game, dropping half of your copies of a card is a bigger hit. Like I said, it's not perfect, but limiting cards that are somewhat too strong as opposed to leaving them at 4, or outright banning them with no in-between would allow for WotC to be a little bold with card design, lessen the hit to people's investment in good cards (a full ban on a card that's only good in one format can destroy it's resale price, so I guess it depends on which side of that debate you fall on and I'm not getting close to it), and can stop decks from being completely wrecked when they just need their consistency reigned in a bit. Plus, they already limit cards in Vintage, so it's not like they don't have precedent for it.

Fervent denial seems actually reasonable for commander. Flashback is card advantage and in long commander games there will be many situations where you have tons of mana. But in every other format it's obviously so outrageously expensive no one will ever use the flashback thus making it just stupidly overpriced counterspell.

Thank you! In a game with distinct pieces like Magic, by definition some of them have to be "bad" relative to the others. The question is what floor and ceiling do you want in the power in your game pieces? Oh good. I can actually recognize people's voices even if Cosmonaut's was the only I could match with an alias. Always good to be able to check both for sanity and basic sensory function. This video was great, and it's nice to see another video of yours in general. I mostly agree with the premise, though I'm not sure I personally go as far as "good", especially for a lot of the "ugly" cards. I don't view the vanilla generics as bad though, even despite basically never playing draft. In fact, I'm actually "fine" with a decent chunk of the ugly cards as long as the overpowered aspect came from something they were trying out that legitimately hadn't been done before with nothing beforehand to compare against it, e.g. Field of the Dead and Fires of Invention (even though those cards are *very* dumb--never have I denied that). I can't agree there's any real excuse, however, for the "ugly" cards that just blatant power creep or just otherwise willy-nilly using obviously overpowered mechanics that they needed to more careful with putting on *any* card. Oko and Teferi, Time Raveler are respectively examples of this, with Oko's most grating issue being the egregiously poor playtesting with that obviously-never-should-have-been-+1 ability (at least as it is). That said, not even this video excuses Divine Gambit's badness to me. Even after the reveal of Elite Spellbinder, the bitter taste of Tibalt's Trickery not also having the much needed "an opponent controls" wording and WotC still seeming so clueless about what they want White to actually *do* instead of not do is still too strong for me presently. Oh well. I can only imagine how long this video took as it is and trying to factor WotC's miscommunications and RP screw-ups would be even more time-consuming, so I don't fault you for mostly ignoring that nebulous aspect. Thanks again.

The "intentionally bad cards that exist so that people will know which cards not to use" category is definitely still bad design though, it would be defensible in a world where they're all free but as a product that people pay for (before even getting into the likely environmental issues of CCG waste) it's just inexcusable. I'm not saying they need to take the time and effort to make them good, because not every card can be good, but they should at least be interesting. One With Nothing is an excellent design in my opinion since even though it's garbage it's being garbage in an extremely nifty way. The puzzle of trying to figure out how to do anything useful at all with a card like that is providing important value to the overall card pool of the game. "lol we printed that 4-cost vanilla 2/4 ox again" simply doesn't, it's just a lazy way to check off a card slot in the set so they can keep shitting cardboard out the door for the most profit possible. At least throw some unique trinket text onto each new version so that it will bring something vaguely interesting to the table, y'know? Even the usual excuse of limited doesn't apply there, since if you give it a niche ability that will never actually come up in a normal limited game then it's functionally the same format just without quite as much wasted card stock. It's nice to try to look for any positives in a game and to believe that the designers are always going to try their best, but it's also important to keep in mind that this is a product. Companies cut corners for money whenever possible and there's not evidence that CCGs are an exception, quite the opposite generally. You can still learn from these cards but for the most part I think it's just to notice the red flags of when you're also letting greed and laziness lower the overall quality of the game you're creating. If you ever find yourself selling people a piece of paper with the intention that they'll immediately throw it away... maybe just don't do that and see if you can't figure out a better use of your time and materials.

I would make some clever MTG-related pun on "breadtube", but I'm kinda stuck. Unsurprisingly, there's only one card in Magic with the word "bread" in it (Gingerbread Cabin; doesn't really work), but apparently the word "conquest" somehow doesn't appear in the name line of a single Magic: the Gathering card, which is wild to me.

One of the things that Wizard's did some testing with was whether or not players liked drafting worse cards or cutting better cards and they found that players preferred to cut bad cards. My favorite reason though is that 99% of players have no problem giving away a huge amount of "bad" cards to new players, meaning you can get a huge amount of players learning and playing at no entry fee. If many of us think back to our first magic experiences, older players giving us free cards built out our collections and kept us coming back.

Honestly the worldbuilding in Legends of Runeterra through flavor text is sourly underrated here, I mean look at cards like Commander Ledros, She who wanders and Lissandras the Watcher and you have beautifully written flavortext that dosen't feel jarring on a card because all that *is* put into a drop down and dosen't interfere with the card or its mechanics, bar that great video as always!
@Spice8Rack
3 жыл бұрын
I think that's fair! I'm not as well versed in LORT flavour text!
@vipLink
3 жыл бұрын
I'd like to add to that, there is a lot of "flavour text" hidden in voice lines and interactions between cards, that only occour when they are played. It's extremely rewarding to hear what some of the characters in runterra have to say to each other after looking into some of the lore. For a digital only Card game I find that is a very efficient way of presenting Lore, and something Magic could do with copying in Arena. Right now Arenas Cards only spout one-liners only just a cut above the nonsense that comes from whatever Hearthstones Cards are trying to communicate.
@vipLink

Example: You have Lissandra anywhere on Board and Trundle enters the Battlefield. Trundle: "King of Trolls, coming through!" Lissandra: "King of nothing without my aid..." The Tone is als important, but it's immediately clear that Trundle has Power through Lissandra, she is pulling the Strings though and there is something sinister about her and what she is plotting, but Trundle is oblivious to any of this, he just cares about being the King.
