I had the same problem with my bamboo. My beautiful bamboo plant was lush and thriving. Then, all of a sudden, I noticed all leaves were dry. I was so upset thinking it was dead, but I watered it deeply every third day for two weeks, hoping I would get new shoots. But, much to my surprise, the whole plant came back to life! I am ecstatic!

That’s good to hear. Can I ask how you watered it? I’ve heard Bamboo doesn’t like water out of a tap, but we’ve had a bit of a dry spell here, so I’ve not much choice. Thank you in advance

Great video. I’ve learned to watch the leaves on Oldhamii for signs it wants water. What is amazing if I see leaf curl due to dry soil a simple ten minute watering and the leafs open up. It’s amazing how quickly water absorbed at the roots is distributed throughout a plant.

I’m glad I live in Louisiana where bamboo never needs water. It grows like weeds here. I’m more worried about mine taking over than I am about it drying out.

The foliage on my Oldhamii also got sun bleached with Western exposure this year despite frequent watering every other day where as the ones that get some afternoon shade have nice dark green foliage. Same watering schedule on both. No doubt they like frequent water but I don't know that you can avoid sun bleached leaves when they are in it all day with consistent above 115 F days we had this year. Cosmetic issue though--they'll look nice and green again soon

My leaves look great on all my bamboo (watering 2xday every day for 20 minutes with two drip system bubblers on each clump) but I did lose a few new shoots that were halfway to maturity due to the heat. I should have given extra water on the days over 110. Lessons learned.

Thank you so much! My 40 year old plant looks just like yours and I thought it was a total goner. Can’t believe I didn’t notice how bad it was getting!!!!! I’m in Seattle and usually don’t fret about this huge bamboo that has taken care of itself….until now. It’s been dryer than average this year. Will water MORE.

Mine is also doing the same thing. We have a drip system, it was getting 45mins in the morning and 45 at night. This was one of the first plants I bought seven years ago when I moved from the midwest to the desert. I always wanted a bamboo plant since I was a kid. Thanks for the info!🙏

Yes, I was concerned with my bamboo too! I live in Yorkshire-England and grown bamboo as a patio border but a little worried about it being near my house. My bamboo looks all brown, messy and hate all the leaves on the gravel patio. I'm thinking of chopping it down especially if it don;t come back green. I have taken note of your video and will consider what to do with mine. Good luck to everyone else!!

Question: Do I cut down the stalks that are brown? This video says that as long as stalks are green, you are fine. So in the case that the stalks have turned brown or hay color, do they get cut at the base?

Have you ever tried to grow Norfolk Island pine in Phoenix. I had one on my patio and it stayed alive through the winter and I just misted it a few times a week. Seemed easy to me but a large one in the ground must be harder or else I’d see them around town.

I have two bamboos side by side One is growing well.. green.. the other has more dry brown leaves but they look to be folded in with green leaves waiting to sprout out sometime… but it appears that the plant is dormant. It’s possible that the original leaves died off snd green ones are waiting to take over in their place…. It’s been in the hundreds a bit maybe high 90s to just around a hundred the last couple of weeks. But I’ve been watering them. I’m just not sure what to make of the “dormant plant”. Ps both are runners but contained in metal barrels planted in the ground.

Hi! In 2017 I planted two fargesia scabrida bamboo plants here in Rochester, NY (zone 6b). They have done very well since then. That is until this winter 2022. We had a couple of unusually cold cold snaps this winter (low single digits) and today both plants have turned totally brown and are dropping their leaves. Are they totally dead or just killed off above ground? What should I do to help them recover if still alive? THANKS!

I recently had to shift my bamboo bush and it kinda looks like these. The other one that didn’t move is still completely green. How can I tell if it will regrow or its slowly dying? And how can I give it some help (besides watering it frequently?)

So we just moved into a house and it has a bamboo hedge. It is the beginning of March so it's still really cold where I live in northern Idaho. Everything is Brown and so I can't tell if these things are gonna grow back or if they're completely dead. Do they grow new shoots every year and so I'm supposed to cut down the old ones that are really tall? Because they just pull right out of the ground but the root ball is still there
