The Oceanographic Support Ship Ary Rongel - H 44, ex-Polar Queen, was the first ship to bear that name in the Brazilian Navy, in honor of Admiral Ary dos Santos Rongel. She was built by the shipyard George Eides Sonner A / S, Hoylandsbygd, Norway, as a research vessel for G. C. Rieber Shipping A / S, Bergen, Norway. She entered service on January 22, 1981. In 1993, through an international competition, the process of obtaining a new floating medium to support the Brazilian Antarctic Program (PROANTAR) was initiated. From the 10th to the 13th of February, the Polar Queen was inspected by Brazilian Navy officials in Capetown (South Africa), having proven its excellent conditions of material, research equipment and sensors, enabling it to operate in a field of fragmented ice. On February 23, 1994, the contract for the acquisition of Polar Queen was signed, with the company Polar Queen A/S, in the amount of US$ 15.9 million, and the ship was delivered to the Navy of Brazil on April 19, 1994. submitted to the Armament Exhibition and Incorporated into the Navy on April 25, 1994, in a ceremony presided over by the Chief of Staff of the Navy, Fleet Admiral Carlos Eduardo Cezar de Andrade.
