I like how everyone keeps saying "... it's 1 of the most important parts of a bike" or "... is a safety item" I mean if you think about it, other than your gears and dropper post pretty much everything is super important and is there for your safety. Like I said, if anything other than your gears or dropper/saddle breaks you're in for a really bad day. Hell even those can give you nasty crashes if let's say your derailleur gets pulled in your spokes.

Its fine going uphill and on flat, only happens downhill when I hit a bump, even when I stand up and let bike go downhill, I hit a small bump and the chain comes off

about that 29 vs 27.5 dilemma, there is a point where this 29er better rolling ability is a disadvantage in fact, i find it almost impossible to keep the speed low on some extreme downhill wall like sections, whereas with smaller wheels it will bite better into some holes and let you keep speed lower. other than that 29er is a killer ;-)

#askgmbntech Hey Doddy! I'm looking at going full sus by spring (eyeing a Scott Genius 920 or Canyon Spectral CF 9.0) and have a sizing question. I currently have a Trek Marlin 7 in 18.5", based on my height. Problem is I can't get the seat low enough to get my hips behind it, even after cutting 1" off the tube. While I'm 6' tall, I have shorter legs (32" inseam) and a longer torso. Using Canyon's sizing tool on their site it actually tells me my measurements might be incorrect, stating that by height I should be a L frame, but if inseam is correct I should choose a M. Spending that much, I really don't want to choose wrong. What are your thoughts? Thanks for all you do, you've made me so much more confident in working on/maintaining my bike!
@src248

Looking at the Canyon, a M will be TINY for you, at 6' you might even be comfortable on an XL with a shorter stem. But given your inseam the L would be a safer choice

#askGMBNtech Hey Doddy. Love your show, mate. You've got a brilliant style for delivering what is without doubt a wealth of knowledge. Love it. A brake fluid question for you. I run XT brakes mated to Saint 4-piston calipers and 203mm rotors front & rear on my 2013 Specialized Stumperjumper. Fully loaded up, I'm probably knocking on the door of 90kg. I'm also knocking on the door of 45, and while I can ride okay, I'm hardly an aggressive shredder. What I've noticed with my brake fluid, through either lever bleeds of a full flush, is that it turns from the usual red of the Shimano mineral oil to cloudy black. Is this normal? Natural? Anything to be concerned about? Cheers mate. Jamie Scott, Christchurch, New Zealand

#askgmbntech I just had a difficult time removing some Race Face Evolve aluminium cranks that were bonded to their cromoly steel axle due to galvanic corrosion. I hadn't removed them for about 6 years because I only do that if it feels/sounds like the BB needs looking at. When I tried to use the self-extracting bolt system, the outside bolt thread stripped. Then I tried using a crank extractor which stripped the threads from within the cranks. I tried bouncing up and down on the pedals with all the bolts removed, and nothing happened. Skipping out a load of other failed attempts I wound up sawing off the tabs where the outer chainrings would be bolted so I could get a 6-ton gear puller attached securely and that eventually worked. Is there a better way for if I have to do this again? Should I be removing my cranks every 6 months or something to prevent this problem?

if the disc rubs only in 1 particular spot rather then over the whole revolution its the disc that is out of true. if it rubs in multiple spots it might be warped such that it hits both brake pads. if it rubs all the time its probaly just a caliper centering issue. Try to take the wheel out, push the pistons back, center caliper again by wedging a folded piece of paper on either side of the disc to act as centering tool

it looks like an altus-tourney 3x7 drivetrain, which is touring oriented. I think if you ride this bike hard things will start to break. The rear derailler spring isnt strong and will be flying around on rough terrain causing ghostshifting. The rear wheel probaly has a 7 speed freewheel instead of a cassette, which means you need a new wheel to upgrade to a 9, 10, 11 speed drivetrain in the future. My suggestion would be to save up for a new bike altogether since that would be more cost effective compared to upgrading the whole bike over time. (great deals can be found on used bikes). If you are happy with the current bike i would start with tires, hydraulic brakes, air fork

98durangopack you can. I did it on mine. Look at Worldwide cyclery. The have a sunrace/gx combo for the regular Shimano Freehub. It’s also fairly cheap compared to the Sram eagle prices.
for mtb 8, 9, 10, 11 speed cassettes are the same width

#askgmbntech My question is: Im about to buy the Magura MT5, but I really don’t like the leavers. I’ve heard that if u got the xt leavers, u can have up to 8% more breaking power. That’s true?

Could be the fork.
@ultiss

might be wear of the fork bushings, you can check this by holding the front brake and rocking the bike back and forth and feeling for movement between stanchions and lower legs.

if you bottom out too much with correct sag you should add volume spacers to make the fork more progressive (more force needed at the end of the stroke)

@@ultiss No, topping and bottoming out are different.

It's when the shock or fork rebounds fast and there is a "tunk" sound as it "tops out".

#askgmbntech Hi, I have a Sprint Apolon 26" which is a xc bike, with good parts(some of them are replaced), but I like durt jumping and i am thinking about buying a new durt jump frame. Will there be any problems if I replace just the frame? Thanks!
