That lines up though, colonial heritage gave Air France a huge presence in Western and Central Africa along with North Africa. The UK had quite a few significant African colonies particularly in the South and East, though in recent years they've scaled back flights to places such as Uganda, but France's were more extensive iirc. Also Air France-KLM and Delta are all in SkyTeam, which can help explain that as Unofficial Drake said.

mainly due to Delta having the correct equipment which was the Boeing 777-200LR to do it. American had no interest in complicating its fleet by getting a small fleet of a sub type just to serve one destination. It makes no economic sense.

Having flown AA on international services, as well as other carriers, even if AA was available from the east coast of the US, I'd rather have the service levels and traditions of the middle east carriers, or even Asian carriers. Another challenge with southern Africa destinations is scheduling long haul routes that are nearly North South in direction. The time zones and the duration of the trip create inefficiencies that will leave aircraft parked for up to 20 hours. Also international travelers tend to use airlines from their own region so adding extra capacity in hopes of gaining market share could get very expensive. As air travel normalizes and airlines have more 787s and A350s to utilize you'll see American and United expand more into Africa.

The problem we have is that we are too far away to be a feasible route to fly. I've always wanted to visit the US, Yosemite is on my bucket list, but the cost of a direct flight or a layover is a huge cost when you are paying in Rands. To put it in perspective, a return flight to the UK would be roughly R15,000. That's the cost of a one way ticket to the US, or in other words R30,000 return... and that was pre-pandemic prices before the inflation rate went up again. Can't imagine how much it would cost now. How different South Africa would be if the Suez Canal wasn't a thing and all ships still had to round the Cape of Good Hope instead, we'd probably have greater presence of multinational companies or an excuse to have heavy industry which might mean a better GDP and more tourists going in and out of the country. But unfortunately the world doesn't work that way.

As its mentioned on the video, the distance is challenging, not distance per se, but passenger mile ratio. A seasonal flight might be explored and would make more sense. Long flights like to NRT, AKL, or SYD, are served better because they are much preferred destinations, so easier to have more passengers on the routes. AA did have a route from Philly, I think, to south Africa for 2020, but cancelled thanks to covid. I was looking forward to that route.

Could a 787 even realistically fly from JNB to JFK with a useful payload? Even DAL running the A359 needs to run a triangle route from JNB-CPT-ATL since JNB is hot and high. Flying out and back from JNB always required a B77L to run without significant payload limitations
@andrewesau1663
3 жыл бұрын
I think the main reason for Delta's triangle route was due to Covid impacting the market, but triangle routes aren't bad, if the triangle route is more profitable than two direct routes than they should do that. 787 is one of the most fuel efficient aircraft so I think it could realistically fly from New York to JNB/CPT, however if AA started service to South Africa, they may go from MIA since that's their closest airport so South Africa
@tomAkelife-ff9tf
3 жыл бұрын
@@andrewesau1663 no. the reason for the extra stop between Johannesburg to Capetown before Atlanta is that the a350 is unable to reach Atlanta directly with full payload due to the heat and elevation of Johannesburg being the limiting factor against the a350, as opposed to the 777 variant that didn't require the extra stop at Capetown.
@cheesycol1
3 жыл бұрын
This is the main issue in this video, the lack of depth of detail. A 787, either -8 or -9, could not reach mainland USA non-stop from JNB with a useful payload. As mentioned a 77L is required. Sub-Saharan Africa certainly has some high yield destinations, but so many are hot and/or high. The Europe connection route yields far more opportunity to maximise revenue. Same argument for the ME carriers. I would argue that there is insufficient demand for widespread African penetration by US carriers, notwithstanding the big centres such as JNB, Lagos or Nairobi. Comair, operating as BA, offers onward connections from JNB to AA that no other Sub-Saharan port can, and that no other US carrier’s alliance can. Hence, I can see AA offering a triangle type service such as DLs proposed ATL/JNB/CPT/ATL. Though which second port they choose will be interesting.
@allenkhanyile4042
3 жыл бұрын
SAA serviced JNB-JFK nonstop with the A359 with no issues, ATL is further that's why DL has challenges with JNB to ATL. UA is planning to us the B789 on their EWR - JNB service, both aircrafts are more than capable to handle JFK/EWR.
@bryaneltzroth8833
3 жыл бұрын
@@allenkhanyile4042 ATL-JNB is ~300nm farther than JFK/EWR-JNB. I don't think those 300nm mean that UAL or SAA can carry a full payload and DAL can't. @luisdestefano6056

The North American to/from Africa air traffic is very problematic indeed, many of your listed prospective destinations are simply not economically viable for the following reasons: 1) Distance. It is a general travel rule that the longer the distance, the less traffic it will have. Traveling via LHR, DOH or ADD adds 4-5 flying time hours plus connection time at intermediary point. 2) Traffic is very skimpy, and for most of western and central Africa unsustainably so. All of Africa just totals some 850,000 visitors per year to USA. Less than Argentina. American visitors to Africa just tally 300-500,000 per year for South Africa, Kenya and Tanzania. For most other African countries it is below 50,000 per year and in a dozen cases it is below 10,000 per year or 28 per day. And this is for all of USA, not from a single city. And all these figures are pre Covid. 3) Height. In addition to being hot almost year round half of African destinations are also high, a combination that allows lower payloads per plane. This includes NBO, ADD, EBB, JNB, WDH, HRE, etc. One possible solution would be with a hub and spoke scheme in either SID and/or LPA, which would allow to serve traffic with A320NEOs and A321XLR to ten key East Coast cities to a dozen or so main African destinations. In the latter case just a few destinations would need twin aisles by being beyond 3,700NM away. Total addressable market would be aprox 3-5 million people per year or 8-14,000 people per day. Some 50 craft, mostly single aisles would be need. Plus substantial airport expansions at SID and to a certain extent at LPA to accommodate arrivals, transfers and departures within a 3 hour range. This would include some traffic to Cabo Verde and the Canaries from both ends of the routes. This would most probably fall way beyond AA’s business model, but it is an interesting proposal for a new venturesome airline. Once established, the incumbent would enjoy a virtually unassailable position since it would be virtually impossible for any competitor to duplicate for decades to come.

I think no US carrier should do any additional routs because their onboard product und service is so bad, that I would always choose an other airline over them.

It would be easier for American Airlines to go into revenue sharing joint venture/s with airlines based in Africa and/or Oneworld partners other than American flying their own aircraft to/from sub-Sahara Africa.

The only African carrier to be in the same alliance with American airlines is Royal air Maroc.

Have the South African routes fly out of Miami!

It wasnt very profitable. The SAA flight was moved to Atlanta back then. A 747 was used for that service. It was a feeder flight even though SAA was a One World partner. I’m not sure if they still fly it out of Atlanta. Delta started flying there afterwards.

A direct link between JFK and JHB is much needed again as I think many potential passengers has lost it appetite to fly with SAA again even if is starts flying again

That's debatable, that route was quite busy for SAA even with their troubles. I'm also holding an unused SAA ticket from JFK, I've got a few people based in CT, NY, FL, etc. That cannot wait for SAA to resume it's regular service on the route. They just need a solid hard product when they do come back.

Not a big concern, Emirates,KLM and other airlines will do the job.

No, they should not fly to Africa. it is about demand, if there is no big Demand for AA, there is no flight. It is about making the flight profitable, not just to fly there for the sake of adding destinations.

Delta was supposed to fly to Tanzania with a refueling stop in Ghana. Then covid happened.. and now the only way to get a decent pizza is with Kenya Airways that does JFK.

It would help if American had a sub-Saharan African partner. A lot will depend on how South African Airways restructures.

In a way they already do. Comair flies regional routes for BA, so that automatically makes them a partner of AA since AA-BA are in a JV together.

@@btube2006- Good point, and good to know. I'm wondering if American's B789 or 788 can do the flight, given Johannesburg's high altitude. Delta's A350s need to refuel in Capetown to make the westward trip, but Atlanta's about 300 miles farther from Johannesburg than either New York or Miami.
