I recently got a great question from a viewer: “Why is it that in 5000+ years of Middle-earth history, there are little to no technological advancements? Why are they still riding horses and burning wood for warmth after all that time, and there’s no flying cars or floating cities or vast digital information repositories or better, galactic travel? There is magic in Middle-earth, why didn’t any society advance to a higher level of technological and academic state?”
Great question! There are lots of ways to tackle this one. We could just say, "Actually, it does," and leave it at that. But that's no fun. So why doesn't technology advance in Middle-earth? I'll give you three reasons why. (And then the best answer at the very end.)
