In this short segment we briefly explore the idiosyncratic identity of the Dominican ethnic group which is la dominicanidad. La Dominicanidad is a unique identity that celebrates all parts (with neither excluded) of being Dominican.
From the point of view of anthropology and sociology, the Dominican ethnic group emerged 500 years ago and are descendants of Tainos, Europeans and Africans. Our combined indigenous ancestry dates back genetically to 2,500 years ago in the Americas and culturally we have inherited various customs from other indigenous groups who lived on the island 7,000 years ago. We have inherited African customs from West Central Africa and European customs from Southwest Europe. We are a stew. We are descendants of those who preceded us on that island, we know it by DNA and cultural heritage. We Dominicans need to better study our history in order to better understand ourselves.
