"Rather than me being the doer of good, it is the spirit doing the good and I am an obstacle of it". This is a very eye-opening perspective of life. Assuming the spirit is 'stillness' and 'presence', I am interpreting Mr. Butler's insight to mean that we can do good simply by 'being' instead of feeling the need to act. This may not apply to every situation but in my experience, asserting a calm demeanor and speaking/acting only when it is requested of me, seems to produce a warmer atmosphere for those persons in my presence.

Yes, 'sitting' is the disease of the 21st Century is what I heard, so when I asked my Zen teacher what he was doing, he said: Just Standing. Meditation is doing one thing at a time, that's all. The fall, or the curse upon the fall remains the fundamental problem we've addressed, and we're adapting to billions of cursors online now. Fatherland has been replaced by Motherland, and I support your effort to divine just what it is that Mother expects of us. I wholeheartedly agree to follow along to do what's right, but like you, I don't always know what to do next, so I meditate until the right answer comes, as you do.

he's in la la land of touch with the 'real world'...like many 'guru types' who want to get into the rarified 'too spiritual' life they remove themselves from 'regular living' and sit on their 'mountain tops' looking down on others...if everyone was like John the world would be dull, lack playfulness, wildness and giggles...God is 'wild'...i am not a 'corrupt' being...he's clocked up bla bla hours in meditation...pure 'escapism'...i sound like i'm knocking him , guess i am...he sets himself up as an example of how 'others ought to be' and now way...Tollee, Papaji, Mooji, Dyer, Jung, Hillman, Thomas Moore and so many other people 'live in the real world'...this guy is 'sitting on top of a mountain'...good for him...wonderful...i trust and pray you love it there and live in the lap of peace beyond all understanding...he's escaped the everyday and decides not to 'engage' the ego and wildness and spontaneity...he come unglued standing in line at an airport counter...of course he's not going to be at an airport counter...anyone who lives in the church with those surroundings can 'easily be spiritual'...no big deal...etc.

John, your meditation is the only best thing to do according to you is because it's not really meditation, as you have answered it yourself, its like a prayer. Basically, you are saying, meditation, which is spending time with your Creator, is the best thing anyone can do, especially those who 'tries to do something'. Therefore, if you want to make a difference, spend time with Jesus/God, and by no planned effort and your soothing voice, thousands ending up trying this life-changing 'no use' meditation. Some get the bonus of eternal life too. You rock 'Treebeard'.

John seems to suggest that anything any one does only blocks the goodness that would exist without someone doing this work. Imagine a world where everyone thought like that. Nobody would work towards curing cancer or help fight against poverty. There would be no scientific advancement and we’d still be in the Stone Age. I don’t doubt that John wishes to do good in the world but he doesn’t seem to have thought any of these big questions through. It worries me that so many people in the comments seem to accept what he says without questioning it in any way.

Alex S Davidson Perhaps, though how do you determine what is “truthful” and what is “babble?” Encouraging people to listen to this, just for the truths it may, or may not, contain, will inevitably result in people also believing in the babble, which as you explained, encourages ignorance.
