Loved reading the entire manga as when I got to it in the 2000s it made me realize just how much Akira Toriyama put into the story with his art, dialogue, and even the small tidbits like the front small text in the beginning of the volume. Plus, it made me aware that it was really just one big story as it was the anime where it was split from db to dbz. Also, the dialogue was so much better closer to the Japanese as it was the 2000s once again when I started to watch the series in Japanese.

Mike I don’t think a person has to read the manga to love Dragon Ball some people are just anime fans. I know what you are saying but I don’t like to get into debate of what is a real fan. It’s like some people think that to be a real baseball fan you have to spend thousands of dollars in merch and go and spend more money on tickets, some people don’t have the money others don’t have the time and other just don’t like the manga medium. Yes, Akira Toriyama’s heart is in the manga but so is in the anime and the anime also has the heart of a lot of voice actors, animators that were inspired by Akira Toriyama. Would I recommend people read the manga if they want to see how awesome it is, definitely. Would I say they are not real fans and they do not love Akira Toriyama’s work because they are not interested in the manga, No!! I have to agree. Like many others, I started out watching DBZ on Toonami. I eventually started watching the Original JPN with subtitles. That was how it was for many years. One day, I decided I wanted the Season 2 DVD and ended up going to the mall to get it. They didn't have it. In fact, all they had were the Androids/Cell DVDs. I was a bit salty and was ready to go home when I noticed these Dragon Ball Z books on a shelf in the corner. I picked it up. Felt a bit odd because I was reading it the wrong way. I had never touched a Manga prior to this. Despite that, the artwork of Majin Vegeta beating up on Fat Boo was amazing. The other book (Vol. 24) had Gotenks on the cover. I started looking through that and saw Super Saiyan 3 Goku beating up on Fat Boo and was loving the art and dialogue. I ended up buying both Vol. 23 and 24. Those were the only ones there that day. I never looked back since. I eventually bought them all over time. I'm so happy that particular store didn't have the DVD I was looking for that day. If it did, I probably wouldn't have continued looking around. I love the Anime, but the Manga was a game changer. It enhanced my understanding of the series in general, which made discussions around it much more fun.

It doesn't matter what language it is or what is translated into, you can tell a story just based on the characters and actions alone and still get a chuckle out of it, or suspense! He is the type of Storyteller that doesn't need a lot of words and narrative to convey a message! He captures it all wonderfully through visuals alone❤

I've never read the manga but I'm a HUGE Dragon Ball Z nerd and I know there's differences between the two and that Dragon Ball Z Kai was more manga accurate but I still hear it's not a perfect adaptation to the manga but I know the story is essentially still the same such as the Gohan is taken by Raditz in the start of Z, Picollo trains Gohan, the saiyans come to earth, The Z warriors fight the saiyans, then go to Namek etc, etc come and all that stuff but yes I know the manga sheds light on the anime series but I don't think people should feel forced to read the manga since there's some subtle differences between the manga and the anime. I think I definitely should read the manga but I don't feel like I need to thanks to the fans and KZitemrs that have already made content and the own conclusions I've made myself. I don't want to lose the characters I already have in my mind about each one. LIke I was digging for some content on Future Trunks and since I was a kid I've been a huge fan of Trunks he's definitely in my top 10 favorite DB characters and it's insane when I realized Trunks didn't do as much as I thought he did and when you listen or read back through his dialogue you start to notice wow this character isn't quite as interesting as I thought he was when I was 12 same with a lot of other characters. I even bet there wouldn't be that many people who hate on Goku or other characters if not for the internet. I know this comment is long lol it's definitely not a hate comment I just felt like sharing my thoughts. I grew up watching DBZ on toonami in the 90's. So regardless of original intent, that for me is the definitive version of the series. I've attempted to read the manga a few times, each resulting in visual whiplash. I'd go so far as to say, that I don't really like Dragon Ball in it's original format. I like the westernized (bastardized) version I grew up with. That dislike stems from how the characters act in the original series. A good example would be how Goku acts, it's aggravating how little he cares for the well being of his friends and family. Imagine that character if the Dragon Balls were to suddenly disappear. A character causing the death of others via lapse in judgement, is much more forgivable than one that causes deaths for purely selfish reasons (at least for me). I'm not much of a fan of the newer DB media either, especially after Kai came to be (though that's a discussion for another time).

Comparing the manga and anime is like an black and white photo from the 30s vs a color photo of the same time, or a late era 2D SNES/Genesis/GBA/Saturn to a PS2 3D game. The DB manga is close to as good as you can get with black and white manga, and there's just a timelessness that's not there with the anime. The music is good, but its still clearly very tv sized, and the animation and backgrounds don't add that much besides color and voices when compared to modern anime (which uses a lot of CGI) or big budget 2D stuff of the time like Miyazaki. I feel like mid era DBZ is when the anime really evolves into its own thing.

I recently finished reading the manga and it's just an all-around superior experience because the rhythm is perfect. Every panel feels purposeful, especially during the fights, and Toriyama's art is so sharp and expressive. I'd only argue the best way to experience the Majin buu saga in particular is the DBZ Kai version. In the manga it feels too rushed and careless, like Toriyama just didn't care that much anymore. Kai finds the sweetspot, imo.

It is definitely something I intend to read at some point, and currently have it bookmarked. So it will definitely happen one day. I tend to have a few interests though which I want to pursue. The manga I am currently more focused on trying to catch up on is One Piece. I am up to chapter 914, so maybe when that happens I can start Dragon Ball.

Out of minor curiosity, why does the front cover of your manga include “Z” in it? I thought the manga was only called DB?

There’s some things the anime did better than the manga in my opinion, specifically in DBZ

I’ve read the entire manga 3 times and amazes me how many people never touched it! The art is just out of this planet, toriyama flow is just extraordinary, a 10/10 for me! I couldnt agree more with you my friend

Thank you for this. I’m going to start reading the manga soon. Do you know how much of the digital version through the Shonen Jump app is censored?

It annoys the hell out of me when people don't read the manga. A friend of mine is writing a Dragon Ball story and got a comment that said goku's birth date was age 737, when in reality, it was retconned by DB minus to be age 734, making him three years old. Apparently, many people were unaware that DB minus: departure of the fated child oneshot from Jaco the Galactic Patrolmen, also written by toriyama, was a thing and retconned and contradicts many of the anime material, which clearly shows. Most of these fans are obnoxious anime only watchers who don't read the original source material to understand context. It's annoying in the Naruto community as well when most of those fans only watch the anime as well instead of reading the manga as a side along.

I said the same thing about Naruto. So much misinformation and just general lack of understanding of the series comes from the fact they have never actually read what kishimoto wrote

Funny enough, I’ve been a fan since of DB since I was around 5 (26 now), and with how much I LOVE this franchise, I never had an urge to read the manga tbh (grew up on the OG Funimation/Toonami dub). Watched DB in JP for the first time with Super, and went back to watch Z in JP. In terms of manga, I’ve only read the beginning of Super. It’s somethin’, fr. I 100% enjoy DB in JP, over English (American btw.)

regardless of the points made, i'm tired of people saying "you need to read the manga! it's the definitive verse! the be all and end all of lore!" when the anime is much more easily consumable then going to a bookstore, lame digital provider, or library and hoping they have the recent volumes, much less the full series.

I can honestly say that if I had only watched the anime I would not be a dragon ball fan today. The anime is such a slog to get through and dosent even come close to capturing how amazing Toryiamas artwork is. The manga is better than it in every single way.

the manga is absolutely the best way to experience the story. the anime is fun and a decent adaptation but even the canon episodes are bogged down by filler scenes and shots which drag the pacing to a crawl.

5 minutes … biggest lie … Look up “time dilation.” It was five minutes; they were just moving extremely fast. Krillin and Roshi fought a whole battle faster than the audience could see in one of the tournaments (with power levels in the hundreds.) So, it’s not out of the realm of possibilities that Goku/Frieza fight to be five minutes.
