I really want to go to Duke and I’ll like to major in applied mathematics because math has been my favorite subject since I was a kid and I enjoy it a lot but I’m not a fan of programming.

Nice overview of a beautiful campus. Personally, I would like see introduced other undergraduate degrees, such as a Bachelor of Plumbing, a Bachelor of Electricity, or a Bachelor of Boilermaking, and many other trades type courses that are currently excluded from universities. With these additional degrees, perhaps done as majors, students could graduate with a very useful life skill as well as what they might learn conceptually, both in the liberal arts and the empirical sciences. Further, if they chose to study only the core curriculum, they could graduate with say an associate degree.

Duke would be the last University to add any such courses in boilermaking, electricity, and/or plumbing. The University as a whole is already unfriendly to those majoring in computer science and engineering which are some of the few meaningful careers in the entire curriculum. Duke has contempt for courses such as those because they are demographically dominated by men, which is why Duke has a lot of art, behavioral, cultural, gender, language, racial, sexual, social majors that are ultimately useless careers. For such a presumed prestigious university, Duke is really quite useless to civilization and produces next to nothing in society.

Osama Bin Marx I agree. Most other universities are no different. Trades type degrees would be dominated by men, since most women would not be inclined to take on courses leading to these occupations. If one cannot unscrew a fitting on a pipe, for example, as a plumber, then it would be impractical for one to study plumbing. How many female plumbers are there? Virtually none. We're going to see in the future a multitude of qualified humanities graduates, unable to find work.

Precisely. Is it any wonder that female students comprise the vast majority of college attendants in the US? Because Universities offer more female friendly courses despite their utter uselessness. We need another historical revolution like manifest destiny or the industrial revolution geared towards the expansion of useful education necessary for the sufficiency of human civilization. Without plumbers, we have no draining systems; without technicians, we have no electricity; without engineers, we have no working technology; without construction workers and architects, we have no buildings; without manufacturers and mechanics, we have no automobiles, ...etc. But with hundreds upon thousands of ethnical experts, we have a bunch of homeless, unemployed, and people on welfare.

Osama Bin Marx Again, I couldn't agree more. And feminism is its own worst enemy. Now, even in developed countries (like here in Australia), when the wife chooses to work outside the home, with her university degree qualifications, the capitalist system targets the double income of the married couple with an increase in the cost of living. The husband will always be the bread winner, but the idea of the career woman in combination with being the wife and mother as well causes domestic unrest. It's unnatural.

Yea, women have the ability to work a sustainable job and you won't find many making over minimum wage thanks to their career choices, but I'd say that their tendency to choose often meaningless careers somewhat certifies that women aren't keen on leaving the house nor predispositioned to do so. Universities are ironic in this way that are not helping. In fact they are the cause of this simple fact of life because they enable women to indulge in a counterproductive system. Minorities too, men and women of color who choose to major in cultural classes, as a result oppress themselves and claim that they are less "privileged", thus continuing the regenerating cycle of poverty in the black community and envy of whites despite them being their own obstacles.

Hi, don't tether your dreams to any one institution. Remember you'll be an undergraduate wherever you're accepted. And no undergraduate experience is better than the other. They're all good. Don't fall into the "labels" routine. And at the professional school level. not one argument can hold which says Harvard provides better professional training than, say, Stanford! You'd be breathing equally rarefied air at Stanford, UT, SMU, UCLA, UDub -- get the picture?

Here's hoping that anyone selecting Duke is that hopefully it'll provide a solid base undergraduate education that'll prepare them to interact constructively in an increasingly competitive and diverse world. But latest reports about ugly vestiges of yore taking place in a frat cause concern. With Americans of Asian descent making themselves a force for good all around, shouldn't Duke students think carefully about the future? Duke one day might have a president of Asian descent!

Duke admissions are need-blind and they meet 100% of all financial need, so that's not a factor at all in getting in.
