Every so often, Morj has to remind us that he understands One Piece better than any of us. Every arc analysis gives me a completely new way of looking at the series as a whole. The concept of the unending drive to rebel, has been there since the start of the series. From characters like Boodle, the mayor of Orange Town, wanting to rebel against Buggy, to Kohza's fight against perceived tyranny, to of course people like Wyper. I think my favorite examples are those who suppress their desire to rebel, like Nami and Koby. The narrative punished them for obeying, and rewarded them once Luffy inspired them to fight. Nami getting betrayed by Arlong and Nezumi is the perfect encapsulation of how obeying will not work out for you. And all of these people WERE motivated by their love for others, from Boodle and Kohza's love for the people of their homes, Wyper's love for his ancestors, Nami's love for Nojiko and Bellemere, and even Koby's desire to be a marine to help the people of the world. This theme that Egghead made explicit has been there in the story all along.

I don't think anyone else even comes close to Morj when it comes to analyzing and laying out the underlying themes and thematic messaging of One Piece, he's the best at it. He does it in a way that not only sheds a light on Oda's brilliant writing, but also gives us a completely fresh perspective on the material at hand. That then in turn, makes me appreciate the series even more, and in a much more profound way. Every time I have the honor of watching a video like this, my respect for Oda and his writing just evolves tenfold. The way Morj weaves and connects all the subtle hints and hidden clues, and shows us the bigger picture always blows my mind. It makes me realize that One Piece truly is the epic of our times, and belongs to be up there along with the likes of LOTR. Thanks a ton Morj, and keep 'em coming, this was one of your best videos in recent memory for me.

It's the second best arc in my opinion. Zou still in the first place for me. Egghead was nice, but my main critique is the finale (aka everything that happened after the Kuma flashback). It was dragged out (20 chapters that could've easily been 10 chapters with proper pacing) and I never even once felt any kind of "threat" despite there being so many (dangerous) villains present. The outcome also supports this, since once again not a single death or even consequence (!) occured. Vegapunk and his satelites were the only ones "dying" and now we know even they aren't actually dead and it was all according to his plan anyway. Such a conclusion without any kind of major character consequences just shouldn't happen imho, even knowing that this is Oda/OP we're talking about.

@jefferyguy7588
15 күн бұрын
Splendid work, and I would like to offer some different perspectives to complement this analysis. The passing of Vegapunk seems to have been intentionally foreshadowed from the beginning, especially to emphasize his unique perspective on "death." During Vegapunk's first introduction, he repeatedly referred to himself as "しがない天才科学者," which humbly means "just a mediocre genius scientist." However, knowing Oda's penchant for wordplay, "しがない(shi ga nai, roughly means mediocre)" also reads the same as "死がない," meaning "won't die." This ties back to the moment when Marcus Mars first encountered Punk Records and asked *_"What is death, and where does thought exist?"_* If we look back, Egghead Island is arguably one of the most philosophically rich chapters in One Piece, exploring several difficult questions: 1. *_The Definition of Death_* : Examined through the experiences of Kuma, the Five Elders, and Vegapunk. 2. *_Life's Purpose Amid Suffering_* : Explored through the struggles of Kuma and Bonney. 3. *_The Power of Thought_* : Illustrated by Punk Records and Nika's will. 4. *_Desires as the Source of All Things_* : Echoed in the title of Chapter 1069 and the origins of Devil Fruits, touching on themes of idealism. 5. *_What defines a person without a heart?_* : A cyborg without memories? A clone without purpose? Or a soldier who breaks his heart because he has to follow orders? Using a scientist who should be a "materialist" to bring out this kind of "idealism" creates an interesting sense of conflict. What's even more interesting is that if you look closer, you'll notice that Oda is trying to blur the line between "advanced science" and "divinity". This forces readers to rethink the "definition of a god" So, what did Vegapunk achieve? 1. The creation of the Seraphim. 2. Achieving a form of immortality through Punk Records. 3. Creating the sky via the Island cloud machine. 4. Creating his satellites, mirroring divine incarnations. 5. The ability to erase memories. *_If this isn't godlike, what is it?_* And the parallels with Imu are now apparent. Then, Oda brings in the Five Elders, who bear the "name of gods" but have done little other than regenerating themselves, and has them wreak havoc on this "island of science". This kind of arrangement of blurring and colliding definitions once again perfectly showcases the central theme of One Piece: *_The clash of ideologies._* Egghead Island is filled with fascinating contrasts and details that align with these central themes. Can't wait for you guys to discover more! ================================================= Afterword: Serious themes really don't have to be drawn seriously to be expressed. You can tell if the content is substantial by reading it carefully. On the other hand, some works might seem very serious on the surface, but really the content does not meet what it's supposed to be or is just plain inconsistent.

Kizaru was MENTALLY too weak to in Egghead protect his friends from the WB by leaving his job, because he couldn't stop doing his job, and Luffy was PHYSICALLY too weak in Sabaody to protect his friends from kizaru. Both ended up crying, frustrated because of their weakness and because they couldn't change their own situation Both Sentomaru and Robin leaved an island in flames with a boat, while crying, after an admiral let them go away, all of this after a Buster Call and after losing all they had We also have the "We are 100 times stronger" line from Luffy, which is a clear reference to Shakky's line, "Don't worry, Rayleigh is 100 times stronger than you", etc. There are so many parallels and references in Egghead to arcs where the MCs were are their worst, but completely reversed... Egghead is one of the best arcs in One Piece, top 5 for me, tbh
@KajtekBeary
16 күн бұрын
To add to this, a bit of a reverse: Lucci attacks Luffy even though he is told not to as it could result in a war and WG wants to avoid war with a Yonko, effectively declaring a war, just like Luffy did in Enies Lobby, but one was completely selfish, while the other was to save a friend. The result was: Luffy succeeded while Lucci was utterly defeated and needed to beg to save his friend's (kaku's) life.

In the Egghead arc, I found it peculiar that when Emeth unleashed Joyboy's Haki, only the Marines were knocked out, while Luffy's side remained unaffected. Is this because the Haki was directed specifically at the Marines and didn’t reach Luffy and his allies? Or perhaps the Haki didn’t affect Luffy’s side because they were not considered enemies, like Sentamaru, who was present on the island but remained unharmed? Additionally, the Seraphim were not affected either, as they were not given orders and thus were not aligned with the Marines. If this is the case, it might also explain why Kizaru was not affected-since he deep down chose to side with Luffy.

I love that chapter so much but it was so hard to read it. The day I read it was the day of my Grandfather's funeral. I remember one of my uncles giving the Eulogy and described my Grandfather having "Selfless Hands" and would always use them for other. When reading the chapter afterwards I realized Kuma was also a man with Selfless Hands. From using those hands to take other people's pain away and put it on himself, to saving the Strawhats on Sabaody. Fiction and reality just blurred for me that afternoon cause I lost someone dear to me at the same time as the characters losing someone dear to them.

Really well-written video. Love it and love the connections to the themes and broader story. It’s interesting to me what that might mean for Luffy. He is a selfish character, but he has grown to understand others and be selfless. There are times where he didn’t want to be a hero, but post-timeskip he has been nothing but a hero to each island. He is protecting entire countries. To him being king of pirates means absolute freedom, but is that selfish? Maybe the dream we haven’t heard from him is about how he is going to make the King of the Pirates a selfless goal.

What i love about Kizaru much more is that i think its not really his "justice" or "morality" that he has stepped on, it's his love for his bestfriend. If Vegapunk was on the side of CD, im sure he would roll with genocide. He will always be a cog in the machine, his unclear justice, making him much more simple and realistic some would say. We see the citizens of Lulusia who didn’t get killed by the government were the ones who rebelled, Vegapunk was complicit until the government came after him and died, Kizaru stayed complicit and had to kill his best friend, etc.

Kuma and his relationship with Bonney were definitely what I loved most about Egghead. I don't usually like saint like characters, but his love and steadfastness won me over. I became invested in this arc because of him.

Egghead was a masterpiece. I teared up a couple times watching this. I’ve watched one piece since it aired, Oda and one piece content creators are real world heroes. One piece means a lot to me personally, and I truly hope the series has a sequel/prequel spin-off.

Great analysis Morj. My first arc as a One Piece fan fully read week to week, and it was great to see the themes come together piece by piece like this

Morj, where is your critique of the arc? There is no full Morj analysis without a critique. Or is Egghead 10/10?

Absolutely splendid, beautiful work! You have once again reminded me why you are positively the best analyst of this story. Beautiful stuff Morj! (Framing the thematic message of Egghead Island as an answer to the question, What does it mean to be human? is great stuff. Really jibed well with my philosophical inclinations as of recently, reading Heidegger and whatnot. . .)

As always, a great video, Morj! Every time I watch your analyses, I become aware of aspects in Oda's storytelling that I hadn't thought of or had forgotten because when reading the manga weekly, you sometimes lose sight of the bigger picture. I especially liked the red thread between the first chapter of Egghead with Luffy's true dream and the essence of what dreams are, which was a theme throughout the entire arc. Keep up the good work! (Ps.: NOW I'm really curious about the Wano analysis. With knowing and agreeing how you feel about the arc, it'll be interesting to see how you will talk about it's themes and where it may failed them)

I believe the void century was a battle for survival of the flood. I bet you Imu has some type of spaceship with limit space that he leveraged to get the 20 kingdoms to join. Everybody else was left to fend for themselves; the Fishman, minks, etc. Joyboy probably had a plan to save everyone but he failed to make it work somehow. That was the promise he broke.

Egghead has been one of the best post-timeskip arcs in One Piece. Whether it was setting up the final saga, bringing big character development to characters like Kizaru or Buggy, or that phenomenal backstory involving Kuma, it was a sight to behold.

Beautiful analysis, Morj It's also impotant to point out how the narrative punishes selfish achivements, with the likes of Kid and Law. In Kid's case is obvious, the way he trys to achive his dreams is by hurting others. So the narrative places the ultimate bit down on him, the elimination of all ways he could ever keep trying to achive his dreams the way he did. (He could be back, but he needs to change) And then is Law, also faced with the same type of challenge as Kidd, but the way he fought through that challenge is by relying in not only him but his crew. And not only that, because of the connection he build with Luffy and his crew, Bepo got the drugs needed to activate his Sulong form, which ended up saving his life.
