This tbh. For example the metro in Cairo, most tourists don’t know it exists. So cheap yes, but could at least charge non-tourists extra. They know how to spend money but not to manage it. Getting a visa or residency is complicated. Different rules for resorts and Cairo etc. Took me ages to get a visa. Do they not want my money? The banking system has potential but they try so hard to scare off investors. I would like to open a bank account in Egypt but when I got there they started check points to search people for dollars. 🤷 red flag 🚩

It is always the same in dictatorships. If you criticizes the leader, you end up in jail or killed. Therefore no one will call out dumb decisions. One of the reasons Chinas economy is hitting the wall right now. I know people often complain about capitalism. But capitalism in democratic countries is simply the superior system in the long run. Mistakes getting corrected earlier in a free market. And of course there are things to improve even in those countries, but people sure get more out of it than in dictatorships.

Biggest problem of Egypt is too quick population growth. This is unsupported by arable land, thus Egypt needs to sacrifice a lot of its productivity to import food. And the population is growing and growing at a rapid pace. European countries would be glad to receive this population surplus, but there is a problem of cultural incompatibility, namely in the religion of Islam.
@u-3641
5 ай бұрын
The Egyptians do not want to understand this. The government is tired of telling them about the need to regulate the population and control the rates of increase. Some people who only remember their religion always come up in such topics. “Does goodness come from you or from God?""God told us not to be afraid of poverty due to overpopulation.” Lots of headaches to be in a country like this. People act like America doesn't spend 20 cents of every dollar it generates on its military lol, isn't that also a form of military rule? Is America's supremacy in Nato's affairs a form of imperialism? If Egypt is ruled by its own militaty dictatorship but isn't hiding it under the guise of "democracy" then isn't that more out in the open lol? I certainly don't have any illusions about the corporations and special interest groups that often rule over governments anyway, because debt is the overwhelming power that brings everyone to heel in the end. The ones who can control and wield debt like a weapon are the ones who control everything.

Houthi hedge. By having a port controlled by the UAE in the Mediterranean, they can conduct deals, ship/receive goods and bypass the Hourhis shooting at anything passing the Red Sea. I also wonder if the UAE found natural gas in the Med, allowing them to ship to Southern Europe direct. If thats the case and Al-Sisi permits it, there could be very big problems. Regardless, very bold moves by the UAE. Its reminding me of the very active Italian trading states of Venice and Genoa in the late Middle Ages/Early Renaissance period.

I find it baffling that you're trying to compare this development in terms of "resource-less potential" with Singapore. Singapore is at the neck of one of the worlds most important shipping route. Of course that will turn it into an important place that doesn't need resources to be valuable. But in Egypt, so far from major trade routes, without oil or gas fields in the immediate vicinity, I fail to see how that can compare.
