I think a great example of "seasonality" is Scott the Woz. Dude literally manages his channel like a TV show where he takes long (3-4 month) breaks to produce "seasons" of content. What's amazing is that despite his long hiatuses, his content still consistently blows up whenever he comes back, he has such a strong audience to the point that we'll be there day 1 when he comes back further reinforcing the "the audience is the algorithm" point.

It would work as a basic right that allows the creator to have a vacation without damaging their jobs, like labor law. I don't exactly understand how labor law works in the US, but this seems quite interesting. It would bring more recognition to the actual "creator" class of workers and maybe open the path for more benefits in the future. Got me curious to hear more abt this.

Love the take a break idea!! You guys are driving some excellent conversation here. KZitemrs are humans - you all deserve some element of work life balance, the opportunity to go and be inspired by just living life, to go on vacations stress free etc It's not a 9-5 sure, but there's a middle ground that KZitem could help create with this taking a break concept. This was a great talk. I realized that I’m burnt out just a couple of weeks ago. As a photographer Instagram is like social security, if you don’t have it you don’t exist. I deactivated my account yesterday for various reasons but like Emma a large part of leaving was due to the overwhelming pressure to post and stay relevant. I could post everyday but I don’t want to showcase what I think is bad quality but if you don’t post you lose traction and and growth and that means you don’t get hired for photo jobs.

It is kinda scary when someone hits that level of success but they are still stuck in the video creator loop/grind. Less uploads... less reach. There are people that make master class level videos, but it's probably nearly as rare as viral content.

Frank Ocean has the Michael Jackson appeal, when MJ was at his height he was mysterious and elusive. He waited years after Thriller to release Bad and same with Dangerous. Even though the latter two were not as favoured he would still sell out stadiums all over the world and cause a frenzy wherever he went. Ocean has a more cult following in comparison to MJ's global superstardom, but mystique and anticipation aids TRUE artists a great deal. The fact of the matter is many artists would in fact lose relevance if they took years off.

back in a day when I first started making videos before 2010, you were able to send bulk emails to all your subscribers, saying whatever you wanted to put in that email. It was great for smaller channels to grow and communicate with subscribers as it felt more personal. You could email HEY IM TAKING A BREAK.... HEY IM BACK WITH NEW VIDEO etc... Then youtube removed that. The system probably could not handle all those emails at once
@King0fHero

but isn't the community tab exactly for this kind of stuff? of course it doesn't reach every subscriber, but at least all of those that are actively following you and specifically look up your channel from time to time I'm only one viewer, so obviously haven't got more insights, but I for one can say that I go on the community tab of channels when I want to find out more about the current state of that channel

The only thing I would love to have as a creator is to make all the numbers invisible. Currently I literally have to cover my statistics with my hand every time I go to check comments from KZitem Studio. I dont want to know whether I'm "doing good or bad". I just want to focus on creating the best content and engaging with my audience. Checking your numbers once a month should be enough in my opinion.

It's ironic how youtube removed the dislikes to appear "conscious about mental health" only to not give creators the option to hide their numbers. Dislikes were the last thing they should have removed, because even tho they could have negative consequences, they're the only statistic that is actually USEFUL to people outside the creator itself. If they want to improve the mental health of creators, they should do it with the private statistics.

The issue with "seasons" is that the youtube algorithm looks at how "fresh" a video is in determining how it will rank it - and likely associates that with other popular cultural topics at the time. :Freshnees" is a big variable. You can make a season of something, but by the time it comes out, it could be outdated in certain forms. Despite how much I respect Emma, and I wish she read this...but not getting an editor...a team...together to aid you in your video creation process so you can focus on the creative/fun aspects of it is a very bad idea. When you find an editor or I call them "THE editor from god" on upwork or something...you'll know it...you'll click...they''ll even edit better than you - and you can always spend some time training them. Although Emma's brand is based solely on her, I really hope she tries again for an editor - post on upwork...feature the post...and then just people trials to see how they turn out. You may be surprised....they may do a better job than you even. Breaks are important, but the entire process of efficiency I believe is more important....as you can get to a point where videos are made super fast.
@davidkonevky7372

As much as Emma Chamberlain seems like such a good person, I always wonder if the pressure of having your life already figured is a good thing. Don't get me wrong, being a succesful youtuber has it's upsides, but we humans can live up to 100+ years if healthy enough. What's left of your life when you already had your peak you were so desperately trying to find a few years ago? It seems like Emma is exploring that question and I am very curious to see that journey. She has the potential and resources to do a lot of things, and I will be supporting her with whatever she does. I've seen that she's trying to tap in the fashion industry recently, if she keeps doing that, she could become a full time model

Being a KZitemr is a double-edged sword. An instant feedback loop allows for incredibly fast iteration. However, the gamification of KZitem studio produces an unhealthy level of high highs (dopamine rush) and low lows. It's like Robinhood gamifying their app to encourage you to make more trades. I think the dilemma that you guys touched on of communicating your "break" to your audience without harming your video performance is a big one. Let's hope KZitem hears you guys! Great vid as always

I’ve released about 50 videos in all that time I’ve just passed 22 million views, and should hit 200k subs this year. It’s been much slower, yes, my audience forgets me and click throughs are terrible from my own subs and it’s a modest income. But my point is, it can work, at least on this level! 😀

What helped push my channel to the level I'm at today was 3 uploads a week, almost all on Monday/Wed/Friday. I’ve done sales for years. One employer made me feel super guilty taking a week vacation. Telling me my sales would tank and I’d have to work even harder to gain back momentum. I took a massive pay cut to go to a place with better culture and I couldn’t be happier. Just like uploads, you need to grind a lot for the first 2, 5, sometimes 10 years before you really get good at it and you begin to see numbers big enough to take a few weeks off or a whole month. So you’ve gotta be patient but also remember that a pay cut for the sake of your sanity (assuming you don’t have too many people depending on your income) is ALWAYS worth it

The problem is casual viewers. Your true fans will be there after a break but casuals will find something else while you’re gone. When you come back you have to beat out the new thing the casuals found or get discovered by new casuals. That said, pushing through burnout can make quality drop and casuals lose interest anyway. I love the idea of dropping seasons.

Love the idea of having a "take a break" button. This would better the mental health of so many creators who feel like they HAVE to upload every single week, even if it means sacrificing quality.

Really love the idea of “break mode”! Etsy has vacation mode for shop owners and it notifies those who end up on the profile that the shop owner is currently on vacation. Easy and helpful solution that grants people permission to step away and recharge.

What the problem really is, is that your solution only works for creators who have millions of subscribers. And it's great, I think you've really thought through what could actually work for Emma Chamberlain and creators like her. But what about the "micro influencers" or smaller creators? (*idk the correct terms necessarily or what separates different levels of creators because I'm not one*) Because those creators don't have a choice to avoid burnout or find unique ways to avoid it---they don't have regular or high paying brand deals, they can't afford hiring an editor, they don't have other businesses in their name---their job, their main source of income (albeit even if it's their dream job) is dependent on YT and how it works (i.e., uploading regularly, abiding to the algorithm, etc.) and in the end that's the issue. I of course feel for Emma and what she's going through, I've been there in my own experience, but what's omitted is that she can afford to take time off. As much as she wants and come back to still be the adored, mega super star with unbelievable opportunities. No it may not come as quickly or easily as it did but it won't just go away. And this is where I think the larger conversation begins. I'm not a creator, I'm not an influencer, I work at an advertising agency in NYC with a set salary and allotted paid time off. No, I'm not responsible for every little thing because it's not my agency, I'm not the client, but years go by, my salary moves at a snail's pace. Stretches anywhere from 3-8 months go by where my average week is at least 60 hours. Yes, I have days allocated for paid time off, but what, it averages to a total ~3 weeks a year? And that has to be scattered throughout the year. You don't think I experience burnout? Well, I do. Change jobs? I have, and I now like the actual work I do at my current job, but that doesn't take away from the business, stress and deadlines of the industry. Change industries? Well, it's not as easy for me or other 'non-creatives' (who I'm sure are a wide part of creator's audiences)---I don't have a wide platform that allows me to branch off into something new. I have start at the bottom if I change industries or go back to school (either of which take time and money). And if I wanted to, I'm fortunate enough that I could do it, but there are so many people who literally cannot afford to do so. They are stuck. They experience burnout and they have to keep going. Can we start a conversation and share ideas for people who aren't millionaires, individually successful, financially stable or are sure of their career path? Because believe it or not, I don't want Emma Chamberlain to be experiencing any of this. YT does need a change. I have no right to judge her but I just wish I had one of the many cushions she has to fall back on. And I'm more privileged than so many others that I'm sure many wish they had the cushions I had to fall back on. So let's brainstorm for all of us, please. Not just for one of us. If you've made it this far, I hope you realize this isn't personal against your channel/team, you haven't done anything wrong (I literally clicked on this video because I'm now just curious as to what happened to her presence on YT and her name is how I discovered your video), but I'm commenting this because I think you are actually the right platform to bring up this discussion, think through it and brainstorm ways how to solve the problem of burnout on a larger scale.

Okay first of all the video is great and I loved the whole analysis, the suggestions and everything, but also I gotta say this one thing (with no intention to hate on anyone) - I just can't feel sorry for creators like Emma or relate to it in any way because when you think about this it's just (unfortunately) how our world works. I get that you didn't imply that being a youtuber is the most difficult profession there is, but also I feel like all these celebrities that are constantly complaining about how they can't take a break are actually kind of spoiled, don't you think? I just can't feel sorry for a super rich teenager that already got to experience like a bunch of stuff that most of other people won't ever experience, and I'm not saying she should apologize for being succesful herself, I'm just saying: here in the real world people also don't ever have time to take a break because their lives literally depend on it. What would happen to Emma if she failed being a youtuber? She probably already has enough money to live off of it for a while without even doing anything, and she would also have time to chose what's next that shes going to do with her life and thats a luxury that most people dont have. If being a creator is too difficult for her and her mental state, she could just like.. you know, do something else? She is not obligated to be famous. And if she choses to be, then thats her job now and her decision and she has to work hard for it if she wants to maintain the lifestyle. Sounds pretty fair to me? I just get the impression people sometimes forget that most of the people live shitty lives with shitty jobs and ALSO are not allowed to take any breaks from it if they want to survive. So why should Emma have all that fame and money and also not even having to do her job regularly like everyone else? I'm not saying that youtubers deserve to go mad, I'm just saying that if you feel like your job is going to make you lose your mind eventually, maybe try doing something else? And if your decision is that being a celebrity is worth it all, then why should I feel sorry for you? And how can I? It's an interesting topic to talk about but just don't forget about all the people that exist outside your famous little bubble, who's mental (or even physical) health no one cares about. Not saying anyone's issues are not valid, just saying this feels tiny bit overdramatized to me. Just food for thought. Take care xx

Another incredible video - An ‘On-Break’ toggle would be monumental for creators. And from an audience perspective, it would let me know that my favorite creators aren’t ghosting me… instead, recharging, to come back with more bangers!

I took a massive serried of breaks during the pandemic for mental health and I have a huge catalog of content but I don’t make viral or event content. It massively hurt the growth trajectory of the channel compared to when I don’t take breaks… The analytics don’t lie. But I made more money because of things outside KZitem during that time. I structured them business to be able to take care of me in a way where most of my living income isn’t tied to my as revenue. I use the as revenue to pay taxes at this point. I think that whether you can take long breaks comes down to HOW you set up you channel and your communication with your audience

18:04 this will never happen. this is a situation like that of twitch. Just like with streamer deals on twitch which wants top streamers to stream as much as they can, YT also wants creators to produce as many videos as they can because for them, the more videos, more time people spend on platform, the more money YT makes. Even though long term this is the best thing that can happen, what we need to know is that the goals of the platform are very diff from that of creators. It is like Uber drivers. Uber drivers want less drivers for better margins where as Uber wants more drivers as it increases their revenue and improves their network.

I think Mark rober is a good example. You gotta be a pretty big fan of someone to watch every single one of their videos daily or weekly. But for mark rober, whenever he drops a video it feels like an event everyone gets behind. You can say to someone "oh have you seen the new mark rober video" and talk about it. Most other youtubers you can't really do that, unless you know you are talking to a fan of that specific channel.
