If you are looking at this lesson, then you’re searching for more information about what chords can offer and how to understand more about them.
In this lesson, I’m going to show you how to identify a chords construction, what potential chords can offer progressions and the way to use chords in promoting a songs music style. You might be surprised at how little it actually takes to know and understand the characteristics of chord harmony.
It begins with anatomy of the chord itself. You need to understand that a chords construction is broken up into three chord tones called the; “Root, 3rd and 5th” degrees. We find these tones by skipping every second note of a scale to build the most basic chord in music called a, “triad.”
The quality of a chord is determined by the use of a major or minor 3rd. The color is determined by how far away from the Root additional notes (based out of the key) are added on top of the triad. Additional notes are called extensions, and include the; 7th, 9th, 11th and 13th. If the 7th is not there, the chord is an add chord; “2nd,” “4th,” (or in the case of a “6th,” a “Major or Minor 6th”).
Emotional effect occurs by way of common harmonic situations. The most popular is the “I-IV-V.” Other common ones are the: “I-V-vi-IV,” and the “I-vi-ii-V.” Finally, stylistic function relates by chord influence and /or arrangement.
