Saying that Nicks and other hand made boots, make the Iron Ranger look like a piece of junk is extremely unfair. Yes the Nicks are made a bit more tough, but they are double the price, and the Iron Ranger still holds their ground as a well made boots

I have 2 other redwing boots and they are 12.5s and fit great. These boots seem really sturdy, hopping to get 20 years out of them. My dad has a pair or redwings that are coming up on 35 years old.

A half size down from Brannock, be it heel to ball or heel to toe whichever is greater. Sneaker size tends to range on people a bit more. I often wear a 12D in sneakers but am an 11D-11.5D in boots. My true to size is an 11.5D, the ranger is based off the munson last which was a true boot size so half size down from Brannock. IE 11D is a perfect fit with even a thick heavy sock once broken in.

I've seen this video years ago but didn't comment. KZitem brought it up again as a suggestion my feed. So, now I'll comment: There's beauty in simplicity. Red Wing hasn't changed. It worked. They kept it simple. There's no bling bling. They're just tough every day boots. I do not work in these. I work in my Perry Selects. My heritage Red Wing boots are for fashion for me, but I do not baby them. If they're on my feet I'm doing normal Charlie Goode in them. Everyone has a grail boot. Growing up I always wanted some IR or Moc toes but I grew up poor and there was no way I was getting these. When I got older it was still hard for me to justify the price. Now that I'm into boots, I'm ecstatic that my grail boots are $300.00-$350.00 while others are spending $900+. And I am aware of the different build qualities of other brands. I did not grow up wanting those brands. Anyhow, that's my two pesos. As always I enjoy the content, bubba

I've had my IR's a year to this week. What I've found with conditioning/cleaning is, when you saddle soap them, it'll bring them back to the original color, but as soon as you put on any kind of conditioner/mink oil, they darken. One post I read said that if you saddle soap them once every week or two, then the moisture added during that process is enough to keep them from drying out and you can keep the original color. I tried it for a bit but decided that I just didn't feel good without having some added protection for them. I like the oiled color almost as much as the original copper rough and tough. Either way, these are GREAT boots that I expect to have in use for at least 20 years, with the occasional resole. Buy good quality, take care of it, and it will last.
@jeffloucks2120

What about using the Redwing "leather cream" or similar product. Supposed to retain more of the original color but also doesn't have as much protection from elements. More of a leather conditioner.
@kmb1
3 жыл бұрын
@@jeffloucks2120 I used a jar of that when I first got them, and it still changed the color. It changed less than mink oil or other products, but it absolutely changes the color. But I also felt like it didn't quite protect the leather as much as a mink oil. So, at least for this winter season, I'm sticking with mink oil and enjoy the darkened, patina-like color of the boot.

Carl, Good review. I take exception to one thing you said about the iron ranger- the toe. I have a pair that I’ve had for several years. The toe is too bulbous! It needs to be flattened a little. Another thing you didn’t mention is the heel. The heel is way too hard. It needs to be stacked leather with a rubber top lift. Another improvement would be a thin leather midsole. My Thursday President boots with rubber midsole are more comfortable and still quite durable with the leather lining. The stud soles are holding up really well. It’s not a work boot per say but being a commercial contractor I still wear it to work a lot. Ben Northcutt Birmingham, AL

Don't size down, size up half a size. I made the mistake of sizing down in my pair as I equated length to width - I thought they might fit like my Black Smiths (which were a dream to break in) but sadly no. Although the length felt fine, They tore my feet up every time I wore them and I put them through their paces with at least 5-8 miles of walking in them a week (granted I was wearing them for maybe 2 or 3 days a week but I had them for a year with no let up). It amazes me the way different people can get a totally different experience from wearing the exact same boots. Someone in the comments here says IRs could withstand a nuclear blast, another says the soles of his cracked open from standing on a rocky surface. The breaking-in period is the thing that puzzles me most. Nearly everyone says it's very tough going. Well I bought my 8112s in "oro-iginal" saddle leather almost four years ago and from day one I felt like I was like wearing slippers. I used to walk to work in them every day, about 55 mins each way over pavement and gravel (I spent most of the time behind a desk, I wasn't working on the railroad all the livelong day or anything like that), and never got a single blister. I did use the RW mink oil which they sold me when I bought the boots, but it probably wasn't necessary. As for sizing, if it's any help to anyone I wear a UK size 9 and I got 8-&-a-half in IRs. If you're in London I recommend going to the Red Wing shop (there's only one). Try before you buy.

@@charlesbronson240 I figure life is too short to care what some random dickheads think. My only issue with Red Wing is the boots that use to last 10 years no longer make it to 2 years. Quality for the price is gone in my eyes if you work a physically demanding job.

@@Twisted86 honestly that’s a great point. Also I hear what you’re saying about the quality of the work boots. In my experience the heritage line will last a very long time if you take care of them, like my buddy has a pair of iron rangers from when the heritage line was first introduced 13 years ago and they’re still going strong. But the actual work line of boots aren’t worth it other than the 10875 and 10877.

@@charlesbronson240 Yeah sadly that's the exact point, about 6-7 years ago the quality disappeared. Which is a massive bummer because I don't mind spending $400 on boots...if they last 6+ years. I agree proper care does go a long way but I literally have had them fall to pieces on me after as little as a year, longest pair was 2 1/2 years. I will admit however I've never owned a pair of Iron Ranger's yet.

You are very polite and generous with your comments. Unfortunately, not "everyone" loves the Iron Ranger or Red Wing. As a current Iron Ranger owner I have not been impressed with the Iron Ranger for the cost. If they were maybe half the cost they would be a deal or at lest more tolerable. Red Wing customer service has been average to poor. I have not visited a Red Wing store yet that promotes or supports any of the customer care programs. I believe there is a lot of popularity based on hype. I enjoy your reviews. Thanks.

I was lucky enough to score a pair of Brogue Rangers in black before they discontinued them. Same basic boot with a Brogue toe cap. I keep these with a high gloss spit shine (thanks to my military time....). My standard Iron Rangers are brown and the two pair offer options with different outfits. Boots rule!!

my Iron Rangers are almost 10 years now. And after i clean them and apply oil, they look like i bought them yesterday. I don't wear them all year every day and i have taken care of them along the way. I love the Iron Rangers. (but, i don't use them when it's high snow. and i don't use them when it's full on summer)

Nothing come close to red Wings for durability and comfort. I've a 1907 and iron ranger for more than 7-8 yr and all they need is a re sole 3-4 yes and the leather gets more comfy and aged nicely!

Red Wing has the most ignorant sizing I've ever encountered. I normally wear a size 8 in sneakers (vans) and I wear a 6.5 in Red Wings. That said, they're my favorite boots of all time and worth every penny!

here's the thing-sneakers are the most generic shoes ever designed; they're not made to fit accurately. everybody wears sneakers much bigger than the foot size. 1 to 2 sizes bigger. it's not red wing, it's vans (et al).

With boots you normally go half to a full size down from sneaker size. My bet is that he is referring them running a bit small so that peeps won't go with a full size down. Example: If you're a 10 in Nike sneakers, go with a 9.5 on boots
