Oh wow, I too have a Tacoma C1C Chief bought for $699 w/gig bag, in 1997. The handwritten serial number is just readable inside the soundhole. Today I am ordering some Elixir strings to replace the old. Still love the feel of the guitar and the bright sound. When I combine it with my 1948 Gibson flattop the two really sound great together. I wonder how many there are out there. I only put light strings on it anymore.

I just rolled out of bed this morning and found a Tacoma JM16C on Reverb BRAND NEW. Seller was a certified Tacoma retailer in the 90s and he found this in storage brand new in the original hardcase covered in dust. Opened it set it up plays amazing and listed it. Retailed for somewhere around $1099 I got it from him for $685 shipped in the case. I'm excited!

Linds You got a gem. I have been looking at new guitars the last month and have found absolutely nothing that I like as much as the Tacoma for under $3000. I have to get into the Collings, Thompson, high-end Taylor or Martins and, even then, I have a feeling it would be more the prestige and name of those guitars that would make me happy more than their sound being any better.

I bought a DM9 in the late 90's from Elderly Music in Lansing, Michigan. Satin finish. It actually started sounding better the older It got. The thing absolutely rings now. I only like satin or plane finish on acoustics. Shiny finish guitars just seem to lack warmth for the most part.

I found a Tacoma guitar at A Sharp Music in Renton WA, it was a steal, because it was a full Hawaiian Koa body! Gorgeous guitar, and sounds soooo good. Did a setup recently feels awesome, the finish peels tho, but im not really bothered, ill refinish it one day if it really starts bothering me. All it really needs is maybe a better pickup, and a upgraded nut and bridge, but as is its still awesome!

Hey Phillip McKnight thanks for answering my question. My Tacoma is a DR16C with a sitka spruce top and solid rosewood back and sides. The back is one piece. I'd put it up against any similar Taylor. Only issue is the finish is pealing off the head stock and at the bend in the cutaway. It's a pre 2003 and I got it used for about 650. Sold my Ovation shallow bowl to help pay for it. I had no idea Fender had their hands on Guild as well. I own a 1950 something Guild Classical that I've had since 1987 or so that I used while studying guitar in college. Hope my guitar buying Feng Shuei didn't give Tacoma any bad Karma.

I bought my Tacoma DF18 Ltd. In 1998. It was hanging on the hook in a music store and I liked the looks of the guitar. I picked it up and I could not believe the sound coming out of that thing. It was absolutely beautiful! I mean it played great it looked great and it sounded so good I had to have it. I had an electric guitar that I wasn't using much I traded it in on this guitar which was $800+ for just the dreadnought with no electronics. All these years later it has the dreaded Tacoma blistering finish problem, I've had big chunks of it just pop right off. And after a while the top started to sink in front of the bridge and the back of the bridge lifted slightly. I was going to have a luthier repair it but I could not find one locally so I was introduced to a guitar tech that actually builds his own guitars and he assured me that he could fix it. Not the blistering finish but he could try to bring the top back up and get the bridge glued back down. I asked him if he could do it without splitting the top and he said that he was pretty confident that he could. Unfortunately, he couldn't and never said anything and when I went to pick the guitar up and opened the case I couldn't even speak and the words that did eventually come out I probably shouldn't use on here! I agreed to his price which was pretty minimal actually for what he did and he did save the guitar so I could keep playing it even though he bastardized the top of it. Perhaps it was something he couldn't control I don't know but it still made me sick. I have several other guitars and there is nothing wrong with them, in fact they are Alvarez guitars and I've always been a fan of them and I like them just fine. I think for the money they are some of the finest guitars built today. But my Tacoma is still my go-to. I tried to find another one online and it's been like looking for a needle in a haystack. My understanding is the DF-18 limited model that I own is one of 100 made. So I think finding another one will be impossible at this point. And if I did find one I probably wouldn't be able to afford it. I wish it looked as beautiful as it did the day I bought it but I still love it even with all of its issues! Funny that fender killed this brand When I have played fender acoustic guitars and they aren't even in the same league as a Tacoma in my opinion.

I'm from Tacoma and I had the opportunity to tour Tacoma Guitar in it's early days. I believe it was founded by Japanese investors. They had top quality machining and woodworking facilities. I like Fender and own several but there're room for competition.

I tried a number of very expensive guitars in shop in Denmark street, I was looking for a Garrison (I had heard good things about them, but they were very heavy!) and just happened upon a Tacoma (never heard of them, but it was only £800 or so) I preferred it to the Martins and Gibsons at £3000. It sounded as good and was over two grand cheaper. I then bought a DR20, lovely guitar I will never sell it.

My experience was almost the exact same. Went in to the guitar shop not planning on buying anything and never having heard of Tacoma. Played it next to a few Taylors and a Martin for more than double the price and bought it on the spot because it sounded sooo much better plugged in and unplugged. 15 years later and I still wouldn't trade it for a Taylor or Martin for double the price just because of the brand.

I will never get rid of my Tacoma DR-38. I wish it didn't have the horrible finish problem, it was such a beautiful guitar when it was new. They weren't just the best for the price point, they actually bothered to scallop the bracing, which is why they sound so good. The HD Martins start around $3000, which are only Martins with scalloped bracing (that I know of in the current line). Pre-war Gibsons were famous for that scalloped bracing. Cuntz guitars start around $5000 and sound amazing because of the scalloped bracing. It's a shame, it's one of the critical components of the true dreadnought sound and most companies don't do it. Faith Guitars seems to be the closest to Tacoma in price and sound now. (and relative obscurity) Tacoma guitars are guitars for those in the know. My DR-38 with Elixir 12's is what all other acoustics get measured by. The scalloped braces really project all the volume, dynamics, and makes it swim in overtones. Open sting chords almost sound like a 12 string because of all the blended overtones.

I have got to let you folks know I was right in the middle of all of these transitions I bought a AK 36C Tacoma Tacoma guitar. It came up from the Nam show. It was number six of 150. 2000 year old cedar top that was harvested from here in the Pacific Northwest, which I live I live not far away from where these guitars were manufactured up and Fredrickson I knew all the players involved all the schemes. Yes, mine started filling with the acrylics their fault was in part that they ran it through the UV light curative mode, which prematurely wouldn’t allow the oxygen to mix between the wood so you can figure it out from there. Mine was on the bench to be stripped right beside Peter Frampton‘s and mysteriously mine got destroyed. I’m not going to get into the legal aspirations, but I was told sold by the person working on the guitars, and I was directly involved with the fender representative, same name of mine. And the company which I bought it through the music store everybody in spite of my devotion for fender guitars, and my long history of ordering custom guitars, it weighed no. Good outcome. There is one Guitar that came out of it that was given to me a Willy Porter, who is now part of a band in the Pacific Northwest, which I am proud of the guitarist who started that band is my goddaughter so it had a good ending and is a continuation, but there’s part of that and it was right next-door to Wang Chung pianos. FYI.

If you fingerpick a lot or have big hands the seagull model has a wider string spacing. The songsmith (300 Canadian) is my daily player. It looks great and they are built like tanks rarely going out of tune. You could have ordered from Canada before the rosewood cites thing. They do assemble in New Hampshire I think so you should find an American dealer. These are the kind of guitars that you can feel safe buying without playing. You may prefer one model over another but you won't get a turd. Peace and good luck from Nova Scotia!

Great overview. As usual. After the death of the Papoose a certain large string distributor who has a number of lines of instruments built in the Orient commissioned a Papoose replica. Mahogany back & sides with a cedar top. What they omitted from this prototype was proper bracing to withstand the pressures of normal string gauges. I became the recipient of that one-off and the top is rippled like a wind-brushed lake. The intonation is rubbish but with hi-string tuning it's close enough for weird tunings. My question is: Is anyone building a Terz style guitar anymore ? I'm still kicking myself for not buying the Terz that Sting had built for him by Martin. It was going for something nuts like $2,750. I'm still kicking myself over that oversight.

Which was an idea that vendor decided not to go ahead with so as far as I know, I have the only one. I really miss having my EK 36C, Tacoma guitar the top tone that Kusic Attar was insane you virtually could not see the greens on the top of the surface of that guitar. There is a company in California I believe that bought the name from Fender. A guy in the CTthat use to work there kept the plant in good shape hoping this would happen. They rehired some of the old employees and REO Speedwagon was there when it reopened. Its in New Hartford and I believe it is still open. I have not heard that it closed and that would have made the news here. It was a really big deal in CT when it started up again. I live about 20 minutes from there. I would just get a DR38, regardless of year. Lots of dynamics, plays loud if you play loud, sweet if you play soft, overtones pop in every chord, and probably finish that is peeling off. Action feels somewhere between a Les Paul and PRS more than an acoustic but still not super low where you get fret buzz from playing too hard. I mean, it doesn't say Martin or Taylor or Gibson, so even though they very hard to get a hold of now, they don't have collector value. (Even taking the finish issues out of the equation) Only player value. If you get one, just think of it like Willie Nelson's Trigger. Ugly is as ugly does.

I think this was great info as always from Phil. I have been wondering specifically about the Guild brand for a few years. Like what happened to them. In the late 70s I owned a Guild double neck 12/6 that was cherry finished and looked exactly like the Gibson. I acquired it to play Zep and Rush tunes. Fantastic guitar. Thank you Phil

that's sad, never heard about this, tacoma guitars were great, very innovative in their bracings and neck joints. that sound hole in the middle is the biggest design flaw after the gibson one piece neck and 15° headstock on short grain haha!

The peeling finish issue began long before Fender bought Tacoma

I don't give Fender any Slack at all. It's their fault for killing good brands, period. If you acquire a company, you are responsible for either leading it to success or destroying it and looking like you only care about money. Fender looks like they only care about money, and no slick advertising is going to change that. I'm hoping to stock up on non-Fender, non-Gibson guitars while they still exist. Imagine what you'll pay for an American Strat when Fender no longer has any competition.

I hate $2000 which was a lot of money back then or 8K 36C it had a 2000 year old cedar hard wood was harvested just a few miles inland of the Washington coast on Indian tribal coast property. The tree was buried underneath of an existing 500 year old living cedar tree was salvaged and was able to have enough material to build 160 guitars just the surface material which they only made 150 mine was number 6 it was the Nam show Guitar, and indeed it did get its own plane ticket up from Namm show. And was offered to me first so I bought it first year was OK but it started to crack the finish. I got a hold of Tacoma Guitar, and they told me I needed to deal with fender. They were just in the transition of buying Tacoma guitars, and they were in the middle of two other transactions guild, and kamas. They were located in Fredrickson and a place that I used to go to do a lot of outdoor shooting before they built infrastructure like Wang Chung pianos, which was right next-door to the Tacoma manufacture. I must’ve made at least a dozen trips back-and-forth at the time I lived in Gig Harbor. It was fascinating to be in the middle of all of that but the politics was insanely absurd companies, blaming and pointing the finger at each other. It was chaos the administrative person who I can’t mention, was giving me all of the inside Bottom line it was something that could’ve been worked out. If the money and administrative people would’ve had their heads on straight I actually considered throwing a bid but it was far more complicated. Bad enough my guitar was being trashed, but left a little bit of a bitter. To me but I really thought that they had something. Good. They were concerned about lawsuits obviously end of story.

The problem with the finish of the Tacoma gloss guitars happened pre-Fender. The UV finish has been releasing from guitars that were made way before Fender bought them. That being said, they are still wonderful guitars and I have a 2002 solid spruce top, solid rosewood back, sides, bound fretboard and bridge DR-20 that just keeps sounding better and better as the years go by. I'll never part with it.

I just stripped off all the finish from mine. It was coming off in large pieces, so I just sped up the process. Funny how screwed up the whole thing was. I thought I got a lemon. Turns out we all got the same thing

Interesting. I have a '97 C1C Chief (handwritten serial number) and it hangs on my wall still. The finish had no peeling, but of course, the wood is soft so there are a number strike marks. I hope your work results in a great restoration.

Just revisiting this video. I asked the original question. How did you strip yours? I wasn’t worried about it until now. It’s peeling on the back of the neck where all my cowboy chords live. Scrape it with a razor blade or something like that?

Tacoma guitars had the 'rash' problem before 2004. It wasn't a matter of the luthiers and craftsmen at the Tacoma factory failing to learn how to do lacquer finishes.

Fender has really done a number on all of these guitar companies. Ovation USA was destroyed, the factory and tooling was sold. Now, the brand may be returning with US models, but will never be the same. Guild, Hamer and Tacoma....same deal. While all of these brands may have gone out of business on their own, Fender is the designated bad guy in these scenarios. What they really did was kill the specialty "flavor" each brand was known for. Fender attempted to homogenize and monetize their "brand recognition", which never panned out as they were never big names to begin with! They have had better success with Gretsch, but it is a much different business arrangement.
