“Why Fish Need People” aims to build an understanding of how and why people support fish and highlights four ongoing projects in the Cowichan watershed that are supporting this cause. The projects highlighted are Koksilah River low flow monitoring with Cali Malnechenko from the Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship, low tech process-based restoration in Kelvin Creek with Cheri Ayers in partnership with Cowichan Tribes, Somenos Lake water quality monitoring with Gina Hoar, from Somenos Marsh Wildlife Society, and Cowichan River fish population assessment with Tim Kulchyski from Cowichan Tribes. With introductions and conclusions from Tom Rutherford. Key takeaways from “Why Fish Need People” include a responsibility to protect fish, and an understanding that when we protect fish, we protect many other species.
“Why Fish Need People” is the third video in a series created by the Cowichan Watershed Board about what fish need to thrive, following two videos titled “Why Fish Need Water” and “Why Fish Need Trees.”
