Kia ora!
Welcome to Better Ancestors, and our weekly video series throughout 2021.
This series is dedicated to telling the stories of those amazing people in our world who are trying to be better ancestors to future generations. The planet is experiencing catastrophic environmental disaster, and it is up to us to think long term and take action to ensure a sustainable and healthy future for all of humanity. Using the stories of those already leading the charge in sustainability as inspiration, we should all ask ourselves, what can I do to be a better ancestor?
In Episode 5, Better Ancestors explores the amazing work of The Native Forest Restoration Trust, the largest native forest owner and manager in Aotearoa New Zealand. For 40 years, Geoff Davidson has served as a trustee, over which time the trust has acquired and facilitated the regeneration process on 8,000 hectares of land. Much of this land had previously been used as monoculture pasture land, and was polluted over decades with chemical fertilisers and pesticides. In addition to this land being be cleansed of these pollutants, the native forests will also serve as long term carbon sinks. This month, the New Zealand Climate Commission has called for the establishment of 300,000 new hectares of Native Forest by 2035 in order to meet the obligations of New Zealand's target carbon emissions. This work can't be done without the work of NFRT and similar organisations, and they need all the support and contributions they can get.
