The biggest problem with "movie like games" for me is replay value. I mean, they put so much time into story and cinematic which becomes slog in the second playthrough. Elden ring was the first game for me where I started four playthroughs in a row one after the another. (It's not like I dont like this types of games. RDR 2 and GOW 2018 are some of my favorite games but I will play GOW 1 and 2 anyday over these games)

Most movie type games have an post game section for this reason, so you can enjoy the gameplay without repeating the story. Of course, after a few years go by, it's often worth replaying the whole thing, just like rewatching a movie or rereading a book.

How can it be RE-play value....when those types of games don't make me feel like I'm PLAYING in the first place? Death Stranding made me truly appreciate the visual fidelity of my new tv...and Kojima productions' production values - but it was a CHORE! I soon put it down and never went in again...as I felt PLAYED (pun very intended). I wanted to try for a refund. Such was the tedium induced by it.

The main problem with cinematic games is when the presentation and core gameplay have almost nothing to do with each other. Who cares how many details are in the environment when there's no way to meaningfully interact with them? Why bother making the environment look varied when the yellow marker on the HUD is the only landmark I need? When the story is the only thing that gives context to anything, gameplay has already taken a backseat.

If every (Playstation) game feels like a movie, blame Hollywood for inspiring Japanese Moviemakers so much. Or maybe just Hideo Kojima. At least he said, upfront, he always wanted to make a movie. Then he made Death Stranding, reaping the seeds he'd sown under Konami for Metal Gear, mainly Solid 2, 3, 4, and 5. Then there's Hidetaka Miyazaki who not-so-secretly desires to make a Berserk game, despite not feeling worthy.

Also later you unlock multiple vehicles, ziplines, and the floating carrier, which can be used like a floating snowboard. It's also really disrespectful of you to ignore the ton of work that went into perfecting the physics for this game.

I disagree, at least insofar as you keep insisting on stating "what gamers want." I don't think that's fair. Especially since the games we apparently "don't want" include some of the biggest blockbusters of all time. I for one really enjoyed Death Stranding (and all of Kojima's very 'cinematic' offerings), and found its gameplay very compelling (and integral to the story being told). I think heavily narrative games, when done correctly, can add layers of weight and depth to gameplay and the choices you make as your character. Games that do this well connect with me on an emotional level. I think that's a great thing. I DO agree that there is something to be said for balance. Gameplay is supremely important (I think I can even probably agree that it's most important for me), and when narrative and cinematics move from informing gameplay to hindering it, then I too feel that that is a problem.

God of War's gameplay is right up there with the best of them. Beat the game on give me god of war where you have to utilize all of your skills and abilities in a way that most games let you ignore. Uncharted 4 on crushing is some of the best third person environmental shooting you're going to get. You put Death Stranding up there when gameplay is all about traversal, man versus environment and inventory management. Death Stranding is all about gameplay. Reternal, I guess there's a reason you didn't mention this. The Last of Us Part 2 has some of the best third person gameplay of the last decade. Do I even need to bring up Ghost of Tsushima? Just because a game has high quality cinematic story elements doesn't mean it doesn't have good gameplay. You can ignore it all you want or play on a easier difficulty and miss the mechanics. These games are accessible to a casual audience with difficulty settings but if you want to have a gameplay oriented challenge it is there. I play these games on higher difficulties because I like a challenge. I think it's extremely rewarding to have a story that is compelling to go right along with it. Now if you don't have any patience and just want gameplay some of these games won't be for you but I wholeheartedly disagree on the whole narrative of your video. As for From Software I'd say anything beyond Dloodborne and the move into Dark Souls 3, those games mechanics are some of the Pinnacle in the industry, but some of those earlier Souls games are rather clunky. Those are more about learning the language of what is asked of you then being some of the best gameplay. From Software has honed their skill overt ime culminating into the Masterpiece that is Elden Ring. I'd say their best gameplay exists in Sekiro though. The new Amored Core is also incredible. It's funny that they started with Demon Souls, a PlayStation exclusive. If you want to talk about gameplay as a priority you should highlight Nintendo. Nintendo can be rather Bare Bones but their quality is undeniable.
