Prof. DM, I'm sitting here while the glue dries on my UDT. I've been binging the shit out of your videos these last two weeks. I really appreciate your willfulness to "change the rules" and your ideas have inspired immense creativity in me (including creating my own world and rules for magic). I had to cancel our session last weekend out of precaution because a player was ill. I was selfishly devastated. Gaming isn't just a good time for me--It's an escape. It allows us as adults to set aside our real world jobs, stresses, and troubles and escape into our imaginations, as many of us did as children. Please keep the content coming, you are appreciated now more than ever. Thank you.

In one of the longest ongoing study on longevity and happiness, they found that the single common factor for a long life was positive social connection. People who had positive regular social contact with friends or family lived the longest. They estimated that living a lonely life was equal to smoking something like 8 cigarettes a day as far as longevity was concerned. So gaming can literally help you to live longer!

But isn't it also fully plausible that good health is what reinforces the positive social contact? So it could be a co-causal feedback loop.
@DeGreyChristensen

Mog of War Could be. Though they found that people who weren’t traditionally healthy, on average still lived longer if they had that social contact. While those that made sure to eat right and stayed in shape, though tended to isolate themselves shorter lifespans. Obviously, it depends on how unhealthy someone is. If they are totally trashing their body with drugs, alcohol and unhealthy food/lifestyle, that is still going to have an impact, but the difference in lifespan between those with social connections and those without was one of the most consistent outcome in the study out of every other factor.

Prof. DM, I just played my first online session with Roll20 the very same day you uploaded this video! It can seem challenging to learn, but you can also learn it really fast, especially the basics. I was able to put this adventure together in just a couple of hours. I've never used Roll20 before all this happened, but I've been a DM at a local game store for quite some time now, and when the quarantines started, some of my players asked me to take our current campaign, "Curse of Vlad" online. I knew there would be some new things to learn, but I was very honored that my players like my games so much and it was very heartwarming to know that gaming is as important to them as it is to me. So we familiarized ourselves with the tools and even though there were a few bugs (one guy's microphone was blocked) we all played tonight's session and it was a complete success; all of us had fun. It's still a work in progress, but it's going to get better. It's not the same as meeting in person, but it's better than not playing. I highly recommend Roll20 to continue your games online, and I concur with your suggestions to get creative: paint minis, play games with people at home, craft terrain, read adventure stories (I'm even writing them). We will get through this and we can and will find a way for our games to continue during these difficult times, because you are right, they are more important now than ever. And where there's a will, there's a way.

A few years ago I went overseas to work, to a country where I had no connections, no friends, I knew no one there and nothing about the country. However, before I went there I reached out on the WotC forums and Facebook and Meetup to see if I could find some other people like me who'd be interested in playing D&D and board games. I found a group of people, all wonderful, supportive, funny and caring and they became my family for the next couple of years, my support structure. We celebrated Christmases and Thanksgivings and Diwali and birthdays together and even weddings. I truly do not think I would've lasted as long as I did there if it wasn't for the people I met through playing D&D and board games. Games matter!

Let me preface this by saying that I'm not a native speaker, so excuse me for grammatical errors and typos. I'm catching up with your channel during this time, and I have to say: I'm blown away. Last summer, I tried getting my group of friends into the hobby, but kind of failed due to heavy rules-lawyering on my side. Then school year started and their excitement about D&D lowered, everyone got busy, time was tight etc. so I didn't bother forcing them to play with me again. Watching your videos helped me realise my mistakes, and now I'm sitting here, with a little notebook and pencil in my hand, taking notes, and planning the ultimate first session to redeem myself and D&D in my friends' eyes, whenever these troubled times are over. Long story short, thank you for helping me become a (hopefully) better DM, and "keep calm and carry on".

On your last point; I am right there with you Professor. These are scary times but we will come out the other side. In the meantime, for anyone that hasn't immediately started checking out Virtual table tops like Roll20 or Astral, I ran my first session on Roll20 two nights ago and it went WAY better than I expected. It took a little set up but overall was pretty easy once you figured out the basics. Runehammer has a great video on getting started (Nec-roll20-nomicon!) and there are tons and tons of great tutorials out there. Two of my players live less than a half a kilometer away from me. I haven't seen them in person in nearly two weeks, but just being able to get together and mess around with a game has been a huge morale booster.

The less is more take is so much a; once lost, necessity. I have friends I have been playing RPGs with since I 1978, I totally relate to this message. We moved our weekly game online just to keep talking and playing. We are using discord and maptool, works fantastic. Be safe and keep gaming.

I think this is the video that a lot of people could use now great job. As far as keeping the games going my group is using "Team Link" it is basically a video conference call program that can be used cross platform. We tried it for the 1st time on Tuesday and it worked really well in a 4 hour session it froze twice. But the reconnect was really quick. The DM was able to still use terrain and mini's. It did well enough that we will use in during our Sunday games that I run. Love that the D20 is missing from the background and I am on of the people trying to get caught up on my painting during this time.

Hi Professor! My daughter is our family Dungeon Master for her own campaign, and even though we are in the same house, we have 3 other players who log in to ZOOM with us and play in her campaign twice a month! I also use Zoom to teach an Online World Building course.

I recommend you take it online, like with roll20 or something.

Not forever, never forget that. As long as you stay well and your gaming friends do the same your campaign will resume when all this is over.

My group has moved over to Roll 20. Our DM has for a long time had a lot of content through DND Beyond. That's where he wanted us to make our characters long before we played remotely. When we switched over I learned about a browser extension for Chrome and Firefox that allows you to click on your DND Beyond character sheet and send the results to Roll20. Our group uses it and it works well. Also the same extension has settings that will work with Discord as well

I wanted to try that. But part of D&D for me is just getting together hanging out laughing and having fun.
