It's less than the morals weren't jammed down people's throats rather than that an actual story was being told involving characters who more or less seemed real. Real morals can only come through when you're talking about real people living real lives. It's trivial to say that a prostitute gets STDs and might have abortions. To tell the actual story of how she got into prostitution, why she stays, and what would compel her to leave. That is the stuff that might actually tell us why prostitution is not the best thing for a woman. And if you can think of a better story to tell, I welcome you to do so.

George Carlin was a complicated man, but it warms my heart that not only did he narrate TTTE, but that he actively wanted to work on something so innocent and pure as Shining Time. When I found out who he was as a young adult after growing up listening to him on TTTE, it was so jarring, but in a good way. It's fascinating that this man can go from "the Seven words you can't say on television" to a gentle and kind narrator of a kid's show. It made me respect him both as a person and a comedian.

One reason I adored Thomas the Tank Engine so much is that upon further research, this show (intentionally or not) introduced me to George Carlin. He narrated four whole seasons (including my favorite, season 2), had an extensive range, delivered his lines with the right amount of energy, and proved he was able to star on kids shows to balance out his more vulgar stand up. And on top of that, growing up with him as the narrator gives me the satisfaction of seeing something he was in while he was still alive. Cool, huh?

He’s my favorite narrator too! I grew up in the 2000’s listening to him loving his narration along with Baldwin in S5 and bits of Ringo here and there. Everything those three did we’re absolutely great! George and Baldwin nailed voices and calls for different emotions! Ringo I like for the way he told them as well and the episodes I did see made me really like his voice then I found the Beatles, With Baldwin I ended up seeing his movies besides Magic Railroad. Beetlejuice, Glen Gary Glenn Ross, cat in the hat, and others. George’s stand up is my favorite discovery seeing his stand up. My type of comedy. The other narrators After them like Michael and the bird voice from season 7 and on... all respect to Michael R.I.P, but all he did was yell and never put on any voices and the other guy was annoying. Alec would be my favorite because he was brilliant in the narration of S5 but in S6 as every fan knows he dropped the act and sounded bored/Sad. If he kept his S5 style he’d probably be my favorite. I’m glad I grew up with VHS and DVD’s of classic Thomas in the 2000’s and not... whatever is happening now. I’ll always continue to revisit season 1-6 any day.

One thing that I will always attest to is how evident it was about how little Ringo Starr cared about the role he always sounded painfully bored which he would later go on to say that he in fact was you can hear it in a number of characters voices between the two of them one of the best examples being Donald and Douglas with Ringo they sound like a British man doing a bad impression of a Scott but on the other hand George carlin a man with a typical New York accent somehow sounds more Scottish than Ringo that just goes to show how much care he put into the role.

His voices largely fit the characters to a T. I liked Ringo, too, but he was British and George was as American as you can get. And we were Americans watching the entanglements of these various engines. I think by their being bound to tracks and schedules not of their own making something children could identify with; how they were creatures stuck in thier roles, so to speak; how insight, understanding and thinking brought solutions despite being stuck on certain tracks and following schedules, working out the problems of the moment, largely by identifying what they were - problem solving through insight as it were.

Of all the narrators, George Carlin is my favorite but I do like Ringo as well. George's impersonations of Gordon, James, Percy, and Duke were great and he totally had the Scottish accent down pat with Donald, Douglas and Duncan. Still have a bunch of VHS tapes of Thomas in storage as well as a few shining time station episodes, all with George. When I read he took on the role to show himself in a positive light and to make children happy, that was touching. As an adult, seeing fan made videos of his stand up narrating Thomas is hilarious.

I agree! He's the best for me because he gave the lifeless stories character. I mean you see how he gave the characters like both twin engines (Bill/Ben Donald/Douglas), Duncan, George, Bulgy, and many others. That made the show just stick in my mind for his narrations of the show. I got to hear all three narrators of Ringo, George, and Alec, but Carlin was ALWAYS my favorite. It makes me so happy to hear about how he really loved working on the show and looked back on it with fondness. I know actors have roles they prefer more than others, and it's great to hear that this is one he enjoyed. Of course, growing up and into his comedy, I can appreciate him more fully I feel. I was lucky to be able to watch versions of Shining Time Station with Ringo and George, and while I never understood the actor swap cause I was too young, I always looked forward to the seasons where George was playing Mr. C cause the show just.... looked better visually when he was there.

His English accent was not only true to the show's place of origin, it was also the first accent I've ever heard. I watched the show long enough to experience Carlin's narrarations, and he did a great job at giving each character a different voice and personality. I stopped watching around season 4, so I never really grew up with Baldwin or Angelis. I was blown away when I found out Pierce Brosnan did the show several years later. Honestly Ringo Starr, Michael Angelis (the other UK narrator); George Carlin; and Alec Baldwin were all great in their own rights. UK was lucky to have MA stick with the series, the man is a TTE legend, while we here in the US got stuck with the other Michael. RIP George Carlin, and Michael Angelis you two are heavily missed by all on both sides of the pond. When I have kids the only Thomas they are watching is the one I grew up with. Since I was an early 90s born that would be S1-S7 and even S8-S12. Might even be okay with the pre BWBA CGI era too since it did have its high points when Brenner took over the writing.
