I personally experienced the phenomenon of "No-Show Jones" in 1979, at the age of six. The Oak Ridge Boys--riding high at the time--had already performed, and George Jones was scheduled to close out the night. At least an hour went by (which seems like an eternity when you're a kid), and you could hear people starting to get restless. Finally the door at stage left swung open (my mom pointed and said, "Look, you can see the tour bus parked out there") and a guy came through it, stepping up to the mic. "I'm sorry, folks," he said, "but George is not gonna be able to play tonight." The auditorium erupted in jeers. There was an old woman sitting behind us who had been hollering for George Jones all night, and at this point she was actually wailing in horrified disbelief; I can remember looking over my shoulder and seeing the wad of tape that held her glasses together. I kept asking my mom, "So he's out there on the bus? Why can't he play?" I didn't get it. This was at the Coliseum in Florence, Alabama. I vividly recall the incident, but have no memory of the date.

It sounds funny, and probably was in hindsight, but much of Jones’ life was sad. The entire prime of his life he could barely remember, or enjoy because of his addictions. My stepfather (RIP) was from Murfreesboro, and used to be a professional photographer back in the '70s and '80s. He photographed musicians like Elvis, Jerry Reed, Hank Jr., Willie Nelson, and Waylon on tour. He also used to run a restaurant in downtown Nashville. He and Waylon were friends, and he even videotaped one of Shooter's childhood birthday parties. He had so many Waylon stories, and always said Waylon had a heart of gold, and would be there for reckless artists like Hank Jr. and David Allan Coe. He was on Waylon's tour bus one of the times Waylon decided to get clean and flushed thousands of dollars of coke down the bus toilet. I wish he was still alive so I could ask him about this video. Just for giggles, he also had a story about Ronnie Millsap driving a semi truck through downtown Nashville, while another guy gave him directions from the passenger seat, lol.

Shooter Jennings recounted this incident (but not in such detail) on “Tales from the Tour Bus”. If you haven’t seen that series, track it down. Season 1 covered several country stars. But George was really crazy and unpredictable when drunk and/or coked up. Well, maybe predictably violent would be more like it. George Jones makes Keith Richards look like a choir boy. But based on George’s autobiography, he could somehow perform while stoned out of his mind. I have to admit I enjoy his live performances cause he’s so loose with his voice. Maybe his notes weren’t as perfect, but he was rocking that voice.

Yes do look these up. George was nuts. I love the stories of George buying trucks because he’s bored. You think Elvis bought a lot of cars,George did to. I think most people have had the experience of trying to "babysit" a drunk friend, and then having them become belligerent, combative, mean, and hurtful. It REALLY tests your patience, and the degree of your friendship. But I have to add this thought. This scenario is precisely how so many unfortunate, unintentional murders happen. When people get this "messed up" even best friends can kill each other and later, not even recall it. Happens every single day. It's likely that more than one guardian angel was at work during this one. Thank goodness.

Waylon was so drunk on stage he could barely stand up, he was slurring, and forgetting the words to his songs. I was devastated! My point is that back they performed all f’d up and if you’re going to belittle George Jones, you need to slam the rest of them as well. Btw, I helped a friend move when I was in San Diego in 92’ and for helping he offered me and my buddy tickets to go see Hank Jr. We both declined because we knew that he was going to be in the same state of mind that Waylon was when I saw him in 1979. People quit drinking at different stages of their life. Marty, who by his own admission was a bad drunk. gave up drinking after a life altering event. So Marty gave up drinking early in his life. I think Marty knew he owed it to his family and his fellow Navy soldiers to get off the booze. For Johnny, it took much longer than it did with his good friend Marty to get off the booze and drugs. Mari came close to leaving Marty, I think he wrote a song about it.

My father-in-law, K. D. North lived across the alley from Waylon and was in the same grade as Waylon! They both could get rough, if needed!

Love both of those classic country stars just miss them both as the country music now as ALAN Jackson and George Straite sing it has had a murder on Music row.

To all in this thread posting derogatory replies to my original comment just know this, if Waylon Jennings actually was a phoney, some kind of fake wannabe baddass, do you really think that Legend's such as Johnny Cash, Hank Jr ( a certified Baddass btw ) Conway Twitty, Willie Nelson etc...would have thought so very highly of the man? Yeah, Right, I don't think so 😉

KZitem answer What’s up? Thank you so much for asking & it just shows just how kind I’m certain that you are for asking, “what’s up?”, because it’s been a long hard week already and it’s only Tuesday can you imagine that but since you asked, “what’s up?” I will certainly tell you that things could be better but then they could be worse also and isn’t that always the case with life ha ha no matter what’s happening it could always be worse and no matter what is happening it could always be better, although there was one time, in fact actually there’s been a few times in my life where when somebody ask me “what’s up?” I could actually tell him that things couldn’t be better, “what’s up?” is that things are going so well but then I stop and think you know I suppose something else great could happen and things could even be better so to answer your question “what’s up?”, I’ll begin by saying things are actually looking up kind of like Paul McCartney wrote that “everything is looking better” and then the severely negative John Lennon wrote, “couldn’t get much worse“, which means obviously that Paul McCartney was an optimist and John Lennon was a pessimist and we all certainly all know that therefore if you were to ask them “what’s up?” considering they are two people which certainly fills out the definition of guys plural, they would say what they said in that song which they wrote many songs in their career but can you believe they only wrote Beatle songs or actually all the Beatles songs they wrote were before they were 30 years old which really is astonishing therefore if you were to ask them “what’s up?” they would have been all over the road from the beginning to the end of the Beatles career yet you ask me “what’s up?” and I can tell you that things are looking pretty good, I’ll come back later to finish answering your question but thank you so much for asking that question.

Two titans, actually 2 of my favorites. This is nothing compared to what goes on these days with the biggies who've made it. Sounds like Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis. At least no one was riding around Memphis on a Harley naked with a pistol.👌👏👏👏

To bad there are no more country stars left, to tell these types of stories, Willie is hanging in there, about to do a movie bio, Hank Jr is going be the last outlaw standing, unless DAC sticks it out. So, the lesson is smoke weed, not so much blow...LoL Peace and God bless to all the outlaw fans

If possum would have passed out when I was near? He would have woke with a undesirable haircut and plenty of artwork on his face bya magic marker. Paybacks are hell George.

The reason people act idiotic when drunk is the cerebral cortex which controls our sense of right and wrong goes numb and we then do whatever dopey or harmful thing comes to mind. All common sense is gone because of this. Those who give up drinking altogether if they can't drink socially are wise.

I love all three Conway, George and Waylon. Waylon started out singing Rock, with Buddy Holly. Thank god he didn't get on that airplane.

What did George mean by "Conway Twitty acting"? I know it was an insult but I don't get it. Yes I'm a Conway fan. 😊
