In 2017, I was in the middle of a long depressive episode in my life. I was about to take my masters. When I listened to this speech, it drove me to complete the program. Now in 2023, I am about to start my PhD from a standpoint of fulfillment. The same speech drives me on again.

There are mirrors ON THE MOON that we put there that you can shine a laser at and it will bounce back. Even the soviets, our competitors that had every reason to disprove our success admit we went.

I think so many of his speeches are inspirational,but his words and rhetoric only emphasize the inadequate words of others such as Trump , Biden and Johnson (Boris).JFK is articulate,sharp and intelligent and an inspiration to all people young and old. My mother died in May before JFK died in November. I was only 7 years old. I cried for years after then until in adulthood I was able to grieve and put it behind me. I loved my mother and my President JFK.

JFK was a visionary and the vision he laid out for this nation required a lot of strength, courage, resources and inspiration. President Kennedy provided all four and America succeeded. He was not blessed with the length of time and he left us very early. Whenever I feel low, I just listen to one of his speeches.

@@pattylevesque2601 Like you, I have watched this particular speech at Rice University - many times. Kennedy's oratory skills, his vision and his self-effacing humor are second to none. Above all, his command of the audience, as he creates the visual picture of the role of America in Space. Kennedy may have passed away now almost more than sixty years ago; yet, America needs visionaries like JFK - to show the path of innovation, knowledge and skill.

Ordinary people who had a vision gave us what we enjoy today, way before JFK was born. Steel, cars, electricity, telephone, radio, phonographs, pencilian, etc. Microwaves were popular in the 70's, pantyhose in the late 60's. A lot of conspiracy theorists think Apollo 11 didn't happen.

Thereby saving our fledgling constitutional republic. And Lincoln literally died for the Union and ending slavery. Shubham Mohapatra he was one of our best presidents! A war hero who served his country and saved the lives of some of his men, a man who, during the height of the Cold War deescalated tensions (although the bay of pigs attack was pretty bad), someone who pushed civil rights forward. Pushed for space technology which has many benefits for common people. Ultimately brought the people of the US together which we take for granted as today our presidents now make the country very divided.

In his short presidency none of his proposed bills actually became acts. All his important bills like civil rights , medicare , tax cuts passed after his death by lyndon johnson. People give him credit in cuban missile crisis but it is a true fact that the crisis was caused by jfk only. He was not sure what to do about vietnam , many people predict that he was waiting for a second term to call back american troops but again it was he who increased military advisers there , so he is not more than a overrated president . All he had was good looks , charming personality , oratory skills , a beautiful wife and a kennedy surname ...

I am amazed that Kennedy is accurately describing the costs and risks of the space program, without losing its persuasive value. Today, our politicians ignore all trade offs of the programs they propose when addressing the public.

Yeah, that struck me too. He acknowledged the costs, and it even broke it down to the person (40 cent per person, to go up to 50 cent), to make it understandable. A gallon of gas in 1960 was about 31 cent, so it would be equivalent to maybe $4 per person today. So it's not zero, but not overly burdensome. Still great to hear honesty there.

i am such a nerd for space exploration, and learning about what else is out there in the stars. every time i see new pictures from the james web telescope, or hear of plans to send people back to the moon/to mars i always think back to this speech and think how far we've come. i feel like whenever in the future humanity has colonies on other planets this video will be playing on a loop somewhere in a museum on those colonies.

This is why I love JFK so much! He had a great belief that America could once and for all stay at peace and go to the moon. And because he was so kind and had a good sense of humor.

This man had a way with words on EVERY speech. Though I am only 50 now in 2021, I feel that he was my favorite president. And what happened to him really make me feel some type of way, a humiliation deeper for this country almost, than how I feel about slavery. And I'm a black man. SMH. R.I.P.)ower Mr John F. Kennedy.

This is easily the highest quality audio of this speech I have heard. Normally the JFK Library audio files are crystal clear, but for some reason missed the mark on this one. I really appreciate you all posting this. Much love, James ❤

I listen to JFK and can't help but thinking of Joe Biden. Oh, can't we have a president of JFK caliber? God bless America. JFK said, we choose to go to the moon, , not because it is hard, but because it is the right thing to do. How uplifting is the speech. .

This man was more than revolutionary. He was absolutely correct. God bless the memory of a charismatic leader. A life cut short, a purpose that was not, and a legacy that helps others to survive. Peace is the ultimate objective. Nothing with me has changed. Times change, people change, it was said. No, the audacity of hope. Five years later, his brother Robert, and a negro spiritual known as Dr. Martin Luther King. The security for what remains must be absolute. Again, a beleaguered family represents what someone considers as an opportunity. No, because the same man that said to forgive also said that sometimes one has to shake the dust from one’s sandals as one leaves. Knowing the circumstances that surround indifference that refuses to change is what prompted the dedication for the conditions of absolute security.

This speech, the Gettysburg Address, Churchill's bone - chilling "We shall fight...", FDR's " A day which will live in infamy..." Don't know if this sort of thing is even taught in schools anymore...but if it is, students, if you closely examine these examples, and utilize the knowledge therein, you will get a 4.0.... Been watching this a bazillion times...always makes me tear up... Godspeed, Jack.

Such an inspirational and witty speech. Love the interspersed comment about Rice football playing Texas ! He woke up a few people with that comment ! Kennedy was before my time , but I listen to his speeches whenever I need an uplift .

Now, we can barely grasp how far and how fast we have fallen in the last sixty years since we reached that lofty summit.
