I always hear this "wash your hair less" advise for greasy hair...but for me it ain't happening, I look socially unacceptable without freshly washed hair. I think those who don't really have greasy hair give this advice. I actually refuse to leave the house without newly washed hair.

I had greasy hair but now I only wash my hair once (sometimes twice a week). Once I get in the shower the water is warm/a bit cool and I wash my hair first. I shampoo, then I condition only the lower part of my hair and don’t put any conditioner on my scalp. After rinsing my hair I tie my long hair up in a bun and set the water to hot to wash my body with. Before getting out the shower I set the water to cold so I close all the pores on my body and let my hair down to rinse it in cold water too. Then voila! My hair is shiny & not greasy. It’s straight so I just brush it once in the morning then once in the evening before bed to get tangles out. And because my hair stays clean for so many days whenever I take a shower I just throw in a shower cap and take quicker showers since I’m usually only washing my body.

Life changing Tip: Dry shampoo should be used the first day you wash it. Literally when your hair is squeaky clean. Use it where your hair gets oily first. Your hair will not get greasy for several days and if so you will only need the smallest amount.

ddaenqss OMG this happened to me too after in high school someone told me shampoo was really bad for hair so I stopped using it...literally just used water for like 3 years and my hair looked fine but my scalp developed this white stuff? I still have it ! It itches and comes off under my nail it’s like a white paste, no distinct flakes just a white paste! And sometimes there’s these white things like sand that I scratch off too ???? What is this stuff? I’ve tried anti dandruff and even medicated shampoo and it won’t leave
@asylnn

@Karcher Cox SAME I find that afterwards the more I scratch, something like that comes out but *red* I think it’s dead skin (not sure) you’re scratching out, that didn’t happen to me now that I went to go see a doctor about this and realize I should NEVER SCRATCH my scalp like that. I recommend you don’t too, and watch out for products that have dangerous chemicals in it or ask your doctor what you could do. (If it gets worse, might gotta see a skin doctor)

I'm in the same boat, I tried for about a year to only wash my hair about once a week and my hair never got used to it; it still starts to look greasy after about 12 hours. I started using a shampoo without sulfates or dimethicone made by Live Clean and that seems to have helped a bit. Now I can use dry shampoo 24 hours after I've washed my hair and it will stay looking not greasy for another 12 hours at least. I also had to try a bunch of dry shampoos before I found one that worked on my hair. I use the basic one from Pantene that sprays on clear (it used to be in a black and white bottle, but now its in a metallic gold one). My hair looks duller and feels like it's full of hairspray with the dry shampoo in, but for me its worth it if I only have to wash my hair every other day! I also use some of Lou's tips, I only shampoo my scalp and I only condition the ends of my hair and I use warm water, not hot.

A video from Lou is the best Monday morning gift!🤗 Thanks, Lou! I learned something. I learned “no poo” does not refer to 💩 😂🤣😂🤣 But seriously, I had very greasy hair, and cut back to washing once per week (twice if I have been going outside to exercise). It was a long & gross process. I started by using dry shampoo primarily to help cover the smell, days 2-3 wore pony tails, days 4-5 wore buns and days 6-7 buns with a hat (stinky 🧢🧢, they got washed after 1 wear). After a few months I get a little oily on day 3 and use dry shampoo sparingly to control the oils days 3-5; days 6-7 are ponytail days. Good luck cutting back on poo-ing, and remember not all dry shampoos are created equal. My personal favorites are Drybar original (when hair is not terribly oily), Klorane dry shampoo with nettle (when hair is oily or after a workout after sweat has dried), and Drybar Detox Whipped Dry Shampoo foam (Caution: this stuff only works on VERY dirty hair-days 5 or 6+ after having used dry shampoo for a few days. If you use it before that it will make your hair feel oilier). And that’s it for my unsolicited story and advice. Have a great week everyone!!!☀️

Finally! Someone who understands my struggle with fine/straight hair! I tell everyone (even my hair stylist) that I can’t use dry shampoo because it makes my hair worse and nobody believes me! I’m just an combination/oil factory and there’s not much I can do to stop it. I see girls spritz on some Batiste (yeah that’s a big no for my hair) and walk out the door looking good as new and my poor soul has to resort to ponytails/buns for the rest of my life. I’ve tried every product out there and there’s only one that works okay and I keep around just in case but it’s so expensive, I’m better off just washing my hair. 😣 Still on the hunt for the holy grail sulfate free shampoo. 🙏 One day I’ll figure it out.
@Mad_Rian

I have fine, straight hair as well and I had to hunt around for a dry shampoo that works for my hair. Batiste doesn't work on my hair either, unless I use so much of it that it looks like I dumped a bunch of baby powder on my head. I've tried Tresemme ones and a Marc Anthony one in a pink and white bottle, all of them seemed to ADD greasiness to my hair. I've even tried splurging on a $20 CAD bottle of Klorane dry shampoo and that didn't work. I have finally found a drugstore-priced one that works though. It's by Pantene, it's name is just "Pantene Pro-V Dry Shampoo" and it comes in a gold metallic bottle. I buy this in Canada so it might look different or have a different name wherever you're from. Good luck hunting! :) www.pantene.ca/en-ca/product/dry-shampoo?Google_Category_0_None_Pantene+DSA&DYNAMIC+SEARCH+ADS&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIz6Cv_4jd4QIVlRh9Ch1jwQtnEAAYASAAEgIjS_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

I think it’s important to go see a dermatologist if your Hair is super greasy. I tried the whole ‘training your Hair’ I tried the co washing which I do not recommend, that made my hair fall out in chunks. Thank you for the tips. I am trying to figure out how to fix this problem, consistently! I tried the "no poo" craze and lasted about 3 weeks. Washed with baking soda and ACV. My scalp and hair turned into and remained a greasy itchy mess and after that I said never again :) No more dirty hippy trends for me.

I enjoyed your video and totally agree about dry shampoo - a little bit before your hair gets greasy at the end of day 1 is fine, but once my hair gets greasy the dry shampoo just seems to attract more grease. However, I disagree totally about washing your hair too often. I used to wash my hair every day, but for the last FOUR years have been trying to extend time between washings. Even after four years of trying the most I can get is 2.5 days without feeling like a grease bomb. I do actually go longer now as I'm working at home, but on days' 3-4 my hair goes up in a bun (I brush it morning and evening). It's not a light an fluffy bun, it's a yucky slicked back hair style and by day 4 my scalp itches terribly so after trying this for 4 years, and working at home for the last year where I've extended the time between washes to 4 days, I STILL can only go two days if I want to wear it down. I also do a WFPB diet so I don't think diet is the issue. As this video was 7 months ago I'm curious how long you've been able to go between washes?

As a curly-haired girl, I can suggest that you not only avoid sulfates, but also silicones. They are in most conditioners and basically coat the hair, and they're not water soluble, which requires sulfates to remove...it's a vicious cycle! Also, some shampoos have wax in them. Also horrible! I use either Hask or Maui Moisture. Maui Moisture is comparable in price to most other shampoos and conditioners like Pantene or whatever, but is WAY better for your hair. Also, use a clarifying shampoo once a month to remove any build-up from styling products. I use the one from Suave. I used to wash and blow dry my hair, then flat iron it every day. I was trying to grow it out, but was frying it, so I did a ton of research and just embraced my natural hair. It took a while, but now I can go five to seven days without having to wash my hair, I love my curls, and the best part...it's now past my waist! Patience is key...and no sulfates, silicones, or waxes! Just look on a bottle of Maui Moisture...everything that it doesn't have in it should pretty much be avoided. :)

You are so right about the waxes! I went to cosmetology school & the first thing they taught us was about all the bad "filler" ingredients most cheaper shampoos add into their products. Many add in the same ingredient that is in Drano (that literally eats up hair in drains!!?) and that the absolute worst shampoo out there is Pantene. Thanks for the Maui tip, I'll definitely look for it in my area!

Try using OGX Miracle Oil! The stuff is amazing! Also, Maui Moisture makes a spray oil that will probably work wonderfully for your hair. It's Nourish + Moisture Coconut Milk weightless oil. It's in a bright blue bottle and smells AMAZING! You can find it at pretty much any store like WalMart, Target or Meijer. Hope it helps!

I used a rose based shampoo and wash it only 2 times per week. I only use dry shampoo at night before bed it works great and I have noticed that my hair is less damaged than before. My niece did the no poo method and used organic coconut oil on it then brushed it out with natural hair bristled brush. It worked for her she has knee length hair.

Ooh! What was the name of the drugstore shampoo you mentioned? Manic? My hearing is pretty bad and I'm in a public place with music so ...no idea. I have pretty long hair, I do what you suggested conditioner wise and I don't wash it as often. I also don't use products wuth sulfates. It all helps. But now I have some dry, coarse, curly hair above my ears and at my temples. It needs something different than the rest. Have you seen those customizeable shampoo & conditioner companies? I will find the link for you to check out. Would love your review. I wasn't sure how to answer some of the questions. The "no poo" tack seems...gross. Might try it on a vacation, I guess.

I think I’m on day 5 of no shampooing. My hair has been getting oily by the second day of shampooing. So irritating! So I stopped washing but just rinsing in shower. Then out of shower I let it dry naturally and either use baby powder on roots underneath hair or dry shampoo. By the third day I’m wearing my hair up in a pony tail or a bun. Still using dry shampoo each day- which also adds a pleasant fragrance. I’m surprised by how well it is doing after so many days. I just learned to avoid sulfates so when I wash next time, I will use sulfate free shampoo and cooler water, as I usually use hot water. I am training my hair to not be oily! Thank you for your videos. So helpful! And you are hilarious!

I only wash my hair once a week, but it’s alright because I literally wear my hair in a messy bun almost every single day. I workout about five days a week too. I don’t know what it is, but I do NOT like the feel of my hair on my neck, it just doesn’t feel good to me. Buuuut, my husband really likes longer hair, so I can’t cut it all off. When I do take it down, I will spray dry shampoo and blow dry it a little bit. Then either curl or straighten. Love you Lou, been praying for you (since your loss).

I moved to a desert climate (very hard water) several years ago and have a whole house water softener. I noticed my roots now get oilier faster and suspect the softener salts. No shampoo, sulphate free or otherwise, has made a difference. I've used conditioner as you do for years, never at the roots. By the third day, my hair is matted with oil at the roots down about 2 inches. I have dry hair and where I lived before I could easily wait until day-4 to shampoo. After trying lots of dry shampoos, when I need to use one I've found Klorane to be the best for me, or a little cornstarch sprinkled on a brush. I'm counting on you to come up with a revoutionary product so I don't have 8 shampoo bottles on the shampoo bar in my shower at any given time! :D

I tried in the past multiple times to go without shampooing my hair everyday I would do shampoo every 4 days and just water on the others hoping that would help my scalp to stabilize but it only left my hair caked in oil, i could barely washed the sebum out of my hair :( Recently a hairstylist recommended a new clarifying shampoo Quidad Waterworks and I must say with this shampoo my hair can last 3-4 days and not be horrible ! It's been only couple weeks but I believe my scalp is getting used to it and is doing better

I periodically get greasy hair, without any changes in my haircare routine. I wash my straight, boring hair twice a week and don't use much of any product in it. I've found that in those greasy periods, simply changing my shampoo usually does the trick. Right now I'm using some clay-based products from L'Oreal (cheap at Walmart), but before that, it was Head and Shoulders. I tried a vinegar rinse twice before changing shampoos, but it didn't do anything for me.

I personally disagree that washing more often makes you produce more oil. I have a very oily scalp as well and did a ton of research. I have found that Trichologists and Dermatologists recommend washing often - daily if possible - obviously certain hair types cannot wash daily, such as curly / African American hair. But letting sebum, product and pollution build up on your hair isn’t doing your scalp any favors. Before I knew this, I went a whole year with washing every 3 days at most and still had a crazy oily scalp within 24 hours. It’s just my skin type. Period. 🤷♀️

No shampoo will ever fix this. I believe it's something related to hormones. I read in an article. Things that can help a little bit are not touching the hair often, brushing everyday (it distributes the oils on the lenght of the hair and it acts like a conditioner, so the oil won't sit all at the roots, which makes it look so greasy), use a good shampoo, natural, organic, as little chemicals as possible, because we need to wash often, to remove all the oil and dirt, or the follicles will get clogged which will cause hairloss, itchy scalp, and other issues. Some people have injected botox in their scalp, which is temporary, and somehow stops the hair from producing the oils. But they's no solution. This is how some bodies work.

I wash my hair every three or four days. I usually sub in some dry shampoo somewhere in there if I need it. I have very long wavy hair, like a 2c or 3a, though I tend to straighten it. Dr. Bronnen, or Castile liquid soap is a good alternative to the traditional shampoo. There are many nice scented types. But for those with dandruff/psoriasis I would recommend the one unscented, for babies. Vinegar added to the last rinsing water instead of conditioner is good, too..

my hair used to last about a day and a half before it was disgusting. after i started having health issues, i just couldn't wash as often. i'd use dry shampoo on the absolute last day i could get away with it if i was going out. then wash it that night or the next day. over a span of a few months, i was able to stretch this further and further. when i was bleaching my hair, that also helped my hair to not get as oily. now that i'm bak to natural, i can go about 4 days before it shows. i wash my hair about once a week, but just because i don't have the energy and strength to do it more. on a side note, my beautician told me years ago that women with greasy hair and skin will look younger longer (stands to reason). i'll be 50 in september. people are only just beginning to think i might be in my early 40s. up until this last year, people would guess mid to late 30s.

Ive been using Dawn dish detergent, seriously. mix it with your regular shampoo in the palm of you hand half and half and lather up. My hair is so oily that i don't even use conditioner but if I do I only put it on the ends of my hair. Some days I go all in with just the detergent all by itself with no conditioner. That's how oily my "Native American" hair is. Dawn dish detergent has been a time saver. I don't have to have dirty feeling hair and I can skip a day or two. If it's good for the ducks and animal life in an oil spill than it's good for my hair and it works good for me. I don't recommend it for people who frequently bleach or dye their hair or have curly hair. If you want to test it out then just use a half dime size drop of Dawn and lather it in your hands with your favorite shampoo. I've been doing this for years.
