I can clearly see why these cars are appreciating, as the 456 is a gorgeous car, one of Pininfarina's gems from the 90s. Then there's the fact that naturally-aspirated V12s and manual transmissions are now a thing of the past, so people are increasingly turning to these very usable modern classics. Good video, keep it up!

I swapped my red 1995 F355 Berlinetta last May, after almost 11 years, for a 2000 456GTM in Tour De France blue and have no regrets or 'buyer remorse'. As far as looks go I have always thought the 456 to be an elegant and understated design but that's obviously personal and subjective. I still think the 355 is a beautiful machine both visually and aurally but in terms of maintenance the 456 doesn't need the engine out every 3 years for a cambelt change! I'll take that for 4 extra spark-plugs. I agree that the 456 drinks unleaded like a dipsomaniac on speed but would anyone possessing an ounce of sanity buy a 5.5 litre V12 Ferrari in the expectation of good fuel economy? To be honest both the 355 and 456 have broadly similar thirsts. Both are, unsurprisingly, totally different to drive. At my age (60ish..) having been lucky enough to have owned 5 of Maranello's screaming V8s, I rather fancied something a little more restrained, comfortable and (dare I say it?) wife-pleasing. The good lady didn't mind the 355, except for the colour, the noise, the ride.....etc, etc, etc. She has conceded that the 456 is easier to get in and out of, has nice big comfy electrically adjustable seats and the colour is less 'shouty'. You know what they say: happy wife, happy life. Still, enough of this rambling, it's my car and I like it, so there! Cheers from a cold, dark, miserable and damp Otford, Kent, UK.

When I bought a used V8 Vantage in 2014 there was also a red, manual 456 on the market for £22k - it had something like 35k miles on the clock and even in 2014 it was a bargain. I didn't buy it because of the running costs - failure to effectively use man-maths... paid 33k for the Aston, that 11k difference would probably have covered the difference in running costs between the two up to now... my old Vantage is currently at an auction house with a guide 25 - 30k, whereas the 456 would be double. There's a moral in that story somewhere.
@Petrospect

looks wise and probably maybe driving wise the V8 Vantage would be hard to beat, then again click clack and V12. then again i'm not too sure red is the right color for a 456 I guess the moral is don't pass up on more special engines because of the running costs because it'll work out in the end?

I owned a 456M manual, The one I bought I owned for 3 years and it spent 18 months in a specialist work shop getting the M issue of valve guides sorted along with the following and this isn’t all, the running costs are far higher than being reported, And a 3 year belt service, engine mounts, oil pump drive chain dampers wear out no tensioner, fuel pump mounts, rear sphere, rear shocks leak door window hinge pivots wear and windows don’t seal, AC pump are unobtainium, but rebuildable, electrical gremlins due old cheap BMW Bosch control modules , headlight actuators diode goes awol repair only, Tyres are only shared with one Mercedes. I really wanted one of these in around 2010 and they were about £25,000. But they are so very expensive to keep going. Fuel pumps were stratospherically expensive eg. and electrical widgets were terribly unreliable and cost a fortune. The 400s were at least repairable at home with the sort of tech your 308 possesses except that Bosch mechanical injection is light years ahead of Webers. Perhaps diagnostic equipment and electronics aren't so frightening today for many but they still scare the sh*t out of me.

Remember, most of these for sale are automatic, and it's really only the manuals that have recently increased in value. The manuals are selling and rising in value, while the automatics sit at dealers for a very long time. You can probably still get a good auto for 35k GBP with circa 50k miles. You can certainly get a low mileage auto for 40k gbp, while the equivalent manual could be as much 60k gbp. I've been following these for many years now, and it's been more than five years since you could get one for 25k gbp. Recently, there have been movements both up and back down again. Only the manuals have retained their higher asking prices, but the hammer prices at the auctions I've seen for manuals have been significantly lower than retail asking prices, which isn't exactly what I'm seeing with many other comparable cars right now. I guess this car sold for about what you would expect. The seller bought it for a good price, but it needed some work, and IMO at least, it's in a very ordinary colour combo. I also understand that it could still do with a few grand more being spent on it. So, for me, it probably sold for more than it logically should at auction. Remember, a retail ready car would likely be in better condition, and would have some kind of dealer warranty, maybe three months, and maybe even six months on the major mechanicals. When you consider that, I think the auctions are giving a somewhat distorted view of the market overall. All that said, personally I'm a fan of the 456 and 456M, even the auto. It's arguably the last understated gentleman's express from Ferrari, although you could also argue in favour of the 550/575. Personally, I really love the look of the 612, but the F1 gearbox on top of the fact that it still has a cam belt rather than a chain puts me off from a cost of ownership perspective. Nonetheless, 612 prices still represent great value. Yes, there are a few 612 manuals, but the prices are at least double. I don't think 456 prices will move much. I think the manuals will probably settle at no more than 60k gbp, and the autos will stay where they are. However, I wouldn't be surprised to see the 550 start to slowly creep up in value.

4 seat Ferraris are always the cheaper ones. 400, 308 GT4, Mondial, 456, they were always a bit cheaper than they ought to be compared to the better looking 2 seaters. But as the 2 seaters climbed inexorably out of budgets, people started to re-evaluate the 4 seat cars, and realised that they were underpriced, and maybe the only way into a Ferrari. I remember buying a FIAT Coupe at an Italian specialist in 2006 and the 308 GT4 next to it was 8 grand! There's also a famous PH forum thread on the 456 someone bought for 17k!

Eventually the unloved models (of almost any car) gains if value because all the more popular ones drag the price up. The rising tide lifts all boats. The Porsche 996 is another example. Sank in value for mechanical issues that really effected very few of them. Now they're hot. You mentioned the 964s...another example. 308s could be had for $25k to $30k...but not anymore. The 105 Alfa spiders have lagged behind the coupe...and now the prices of the coupes are lifting the prices of the spiders. Look at the 1960s and 70s Maseratis...they were considered dogs...until everything else started getting too expensive and the bargain hunters jumped on the Maseratis. I think the classic car market is very telling of the economy. The original owners are offloading them to free up some cash. These cars trickle down to the average Joe who buy them for a song when previously a Ferrari was out of their range. Therefore the demand is there and drives the price up. Silverstone auctions are a good example as some car owners/ collectors are offloading some great classic cars. That's only my opinion

Even silver is better than red. My reality is an Alfa GT 3.2, GTA (that it is not) , another underestimated car, copy of that for poor people...Do you agree Jack? Have you tried it?

V12 and manual GT in the old school style. They don't make it like this anymore. Is it any wonder why the prices have gone up?

Always been a bit marmite for me. I love the front end, I love the rear, but I don't like the two together. It will always be one of those cars I like but doubt it would ever be a car I would love. Even as the prices rise, I would still invest the extra in a 550 Manual, which is a shame because as you say they are a good car.

We stumbled upon ours, never even looking for one when out on a Ferrari Club garage tour at a restorers where the 36Km example sat waiting to be stripped of its mechanical components for a `50s Testarossa replica (the fate of one or two). Fortunately the overseas customer pulled the pin and our immaculate Swatters Blue/tan & blue interior car survived intact and to be enjoyed as built. Even the thirst is not too bad although NZ has a rigidly enforced 100kph/62mph speed limit so at those speeds mid 20`s mpg is achievable. We do all our own maintenance but to be honest apart from the odd problem with electrical switch contacts caused by the car sitting for near enough to ten years the car is extremely reliable. To the person who found the performance disappointing as a former garage proprietor and with 540nm of torque the car goes better than a big block 427 Chev Corvette so the tried example must have been off. It is despite early electronic systems compared to later cars (of any brand these days) very simple and working on it is quite easy - I`m glad we purchased it.

I don't think it's any of those reasons. I think that as older cars become harder to find due to attrition, the truly desirable ones rise in price until they are essentially unattainable. This leaves the less desirable ones as the only choice. Eventually the less desirable ones also rise in price.

I think some of it is the monotony of modern cars make people search a more engaging drive.

For me personally the truth is: I wanted to want one - but it somehow didn't appeal to me. Actually drove to the Ferrari dealer because of a Canna di Fucile 456 GT manual last year, but when I opened the door and sat in the car, didn't feel anything, eventhough it was in amazing state. Turned around and sat in F355 Spider and 348, bloody hell, they spoke definitely to my inner child!

They are the gentlemans Ferrari, an outdated term maybe but accurate, the 612 is the last example. Whilst I love the FF/Lusso it's looks are more in your face. I suppose the Roma is the nearest now but it lacks the 2 extra seats and 4 cylinders but maybe that's just progress

4 years ago I test drove a 456 manual, same colour, 30k miles and was offered it for 30k. The seller also had a Rover 827 Stirling (mark 1), I drove that for a giggle to see what it was like and it was actually much nicer to drive than the 456...sorry...The 456 looks lovely but its not quick, uses loads of fuel AND if a F355 costs a fortune to run (which it does) with just 8 cylinders what would a 12 cylinder cost? That's why prices are low. Still a lovely looking car but not a thrilling drive. They are increasing in value because all cars are shooting up. My MX5 has quadrupled in value in the same 4 years so the 456 increase is nothing to write home about in these times. You have to have a lot of money to run / own a 456 and the people with the money to own them simply buy something better or newer. Hence prices are low as they don't really fall into any budget category.

Agree hugely expensive and with astronomical fuel consumption but I wonder if you drove a good one.. I was really quite impressed at how this one goes. Feels plenty quick.. and certainly it drives better than an 827!! 😄..

@@Number27 It probably needed a service but the owner is a good mate / collector with around 40 cars who looks after them. Still it did feel a bit bland and there wasn't a lot of noise or emotion coming from the V12, not like the F355 anyway.

@@bispal I drove this particular car for a photoshoot. It drove like a bag of spanners when cold and it locked me in... (the aforementioned door clips on the video) But, once warmed up and I'd got over the being locked in thing, it was sublime. Went on a decent trip as passenger too and the noise when the V12 is singing at the top end made you forget everything else.
