As a white dude who was raised on rock, this conversation is spot on. I remember when Nirvana came out and all of a sudden it seemed like there were separate lanes for them, Guns 'N Roses, Metallica, U2, Aerosmith, etc. for them all to excel and succeed. It was obvious from the time A Tribe Called Quest got me into hip hop in '98 that there were way too many artists that were just labeled "rap"; and this was over 25 years ago and nothing has changed!! There are so many legacy acts in hip hop now, still making viable NEW music, and there needs to be some distinction. Not only would it benefit the artists, but the fans new to the genre too to easily find more artists in a certain vein that speaks to them.
@StephTerry-c2y

But Nirvana set out to separate from that era of Metal and Glam Rock that got too commercial and didn’t have the same conscious that grunge had. Grunge sound was different, the subject matter was different, the overall culture of grunge was different. None of these artist in hip hop set out to fundamentally make different music from Hip Hop like that.

Culturally we need to respect maturity. When I was growing up we never really cared about age as much as you could tell how out of touch someone was because of their age. It wasn’t age-ism it was about being out of touch. These 40 & 50 year old aren’t out of touch like it was back then. Some are making their best songs but the younger crowd act like they have to respond a certain way just because their 50. Age ain’t what age use to be. We didn’t have 50 year olds like snoop, Jay, and 50…and we admired our legends.

We need to stop lusting after youth and stop acting like there’s only one culture. When we were growing up the black community had many cultures based on generations. The older crowd was old school (70’s-80’s) R&B, Soul, and funk. They had their own thing that made up our culture. Younger crowd had the current Hip hop and R&B for that time. But it in the 2010’s people didn’t want to grow up and the younger generation started feeling themselves so now we have 40yr olds and 20 yrs olds acting like their in the same generation. Going to the same clubs, listening to the same music, dressing the same way. We coexisted with old school but we weren’t the same culturally. With age we came to appreciate the old school but it still wasn’t ours. We don’t have that distinction anymore.

itz not about age tho, itz about subject matter... there could be a 35 year old rapper who appeals to a younger audience, he or she wouldn't be an adult contemporary hiphop artist, but a 20 year old with mature material who appeals to an older more mature crowd would be... itz all about the target audience, an adult who raps for kids wouldn't fit in that category...

Being conspiratorial is lazy. So THEY are suppose to categorize our music for us? THEY are suppose to do something we don’t do ourselves? Our own award shows don’t separate hip hop into sub genres. Our own radio stations don’t separate hip hop. Why would THEY? And if THEY did so many people would have a problem with it because who are THEY to break our culture up into sub genres? It’s on us to do. And criticizing us for not doing it is crazy because not everyone sees it. It’s not us not respecting our culture, it’s us even realizing the culture is splitting. Hip Hop has always had sub genres but we never separated them on platforms. There wasn’t a conscious hip hop station, party hip hop station, or a gangster rap station. So people didn’t think to separate it because these new sub genres are products of music derived from one aspect hip hop music. Example Kanye made MTBDF and Travis music is a direct derivative of that but we never separated Kanye’s music from Nas categorically. So why would we think to with Travis? The question is did we even set out to create a new sub genre? Soft rock didn’t just happen. Grunge didn’t just happen. They intentionally left the mainstream and made a new genre. If they didn’t set out to do this then stop with the conspiracy angles until you’ve done the work to rule out internal issues first.

I’m a musician and I’ve been seeing this forever it feels like. We definitely need separate genres but based on styles/type. Because what makes it “Adult” hip hop? Because I’m an adult and some of the hip hop I like is by some of these young cats who are making hiphop with the traditional spirit of lyricism. They aren’t Roddy and them guy’s either and they deserve their shine. It needs to be broken down by style/type and have no association with age. Age shouldn’t be a factor. You compete with everyone in your respective genre. I also think “Adult” is a bad choice because who are the adults? I know adults who don’t like the hip hop I like and the adults today will not be the adults of tomorrow. So will you change the style of music in that genre as time moves on and this younger generation become the adults? No, that doesn’t make sense because “adult” is not static. It’s forever changing. And if the music evolves again,we just create a genre specifically for it
@fizzychizzy
3 ай бұрын
Adult contemporary doesn't necessarily mean age. Adele at 21 was making adult contemporary pop music. It is about the styling. If you are a young artist but making music that leans on boom-bap styling...its leans heavily into lyricism, you shouldn't be classified with the melodic rappers. Creating an adult contemporary genre would actually get that young artist more ears because his new music would be grouped and packaged to a fan base that is already prepped to like and understand it. But it doesn't have to be about age necessarily. Kendrick Lamar was probably making adult contemporary hip hop when he made To Pimp a Butterfly.

last week I Kept seeing 9th wonder Push that Notion on twitter... I never sat with that idea. cause Rap music is vastly different than that. it also let's the worst aspect of creativity survive and keep its footing in a good space in Music, rap music was not meant to be perceived as such, we ARE rebel Music, we ARE Music that shakes the norms... our people are not accustomed to seeing older age rappers sounding better than their younger peers, when Originally there was a threshold that separated the best from the weak... if your gonna speak about setting up new fences for new boundaries let's start w the Orignal first ( ? )

I've been hearing a lot of convos on birth of rap. I think it's in the best interests to not allow corporations or annual award committees to create the sub-genres of rap. This should be done by the creators and students of rap. The Old Heads breath life into this genre, those after kept the fire going.
