His laziness played a role in many of his decisions (or lack thereof). When he tried to overcome it once the war started going badly, he was so unused to it that he only made things worse.

Yes, very true. Plus his mistrust of his generals and his megalomania meant that he micromanaged (without understanding the basics of strategy) which meant that the personal workload on him during wartime was greater than most other wartime leaders, something he was largely unsuited to.
