So true! Being a content creator can be very lonely but getting better, growing your channel and finding your audience / other like minded people is really rewarding. Glad to know we’re not alone Bandrew 😊 PS: thanks for the shoutout!

I agree completely Bandrew! Some hobbies and even careers are largely about connecting with your tribe, your fellow weirdos! It can be a great feeling.

For why hobbyist can care about success: I’d add that many streamers/youtubers are aiming to put a smile on people’s faces or informing them better on whatever niche they specialize in. By growing your channel, you’re (ideally) increasing the amount of smiles you put on people’s faces or informing/teaching more and more people. Who wouldn’t want that? Edit: Just thought of this halfway into this episode. More revenue from your hobby can also help you put more of it back into the hobby to make it even higher quality. You can invest in better production gear or in the case of a review channel like yours, fund reviews for those expensive audio gear.

One could equally ask “Why do hobbyists watch gear review videos?” For me there is the knowledge being offered, but a lot of the time I’m not actually in the market for more gear, but I still enjoy hearing about gear that I don’t have and most importantly I love the illusion of being part of a community with similar interests, even if I never meet any members.

Agree with this 1000%. We're super fascinated about audio. But sometimes my friends (IRL) and family just don't have the same passion. But it's super refreshing to hear about audio stuff from a bunch of online people on Discord, who feel the same way I do! So yes, agree 100%, it's about the community. And yes, second, it's about improvement. Why not make improvements? There's a simple quote I heard often as a kid by my uncle. "The more you do something the better you get at it. It's that simple." And that's no different here too.

In re: Mr. Blake. There’s a saying, “stay in your lane”. Focus on what matters to you. If no one is running you off the road, no need to care what they choose to do in their lane. The beautiful thing about a hobby is one can merge into the pro lane. Pros might burn out and merge into the hobby lane. One day, we will care more about what makes us happy vs what others find happiness in.

I think the best aspect of pursuing success as a hobbyist is that you learn stuff along the way that you wouldn't otherwise. As a guitarist, back from my first guitar cover all the way until now I've learned a lot about videography, video editing, color grading, music writing, recording and mixing, the last of which I got so passionate about that it lead up to me getting three jobs as a live sound engineer. So basically, I started a live sound career just because one day I thought it would be fun to make a guitar cover for youtube (which was quite bad btw)

just a thought: RE the subscription to feeds thing. Videos broken down by playlist is how I do it. My mod videos go under bench tips play list. Mic stuff goes under a playlist and shorts go under another playlist.

What you do matters to me (and I'm sure I'm not alone) because in a world where we're told to turn everything into our jobs, it's nice seeing a person with a day job making a thing they want to make with no regard to its monetary value. I have friends who write professionally, and they often have to consider the next story most likely to make money, even if it's not what they most want to write. I get to do what I want with a fiction podcast I do because my day job pays the bills. I like seeing what I do reach people and matter to them, but more than that, I love all the people I've met through a thing I enjoy doing.

I use a chrome extension that blocks shorts so I effectively am able to subscribe to long form content without engaging in short form content. It's quite nice.

Quick comment about "Why hobbyist still care about success" before the video ends and I forgot, I'm concerned about the growing costs of everything. If a "hobby" becomes too expensive, it will get cut. I know you sometimes talk about wanting a house (or maybe you've gotten one now, I don't know.. I'm still rather new), that takes resources that would take away a hobby. I REALLY do learn things across your other channels and I might now be able to gain knowledge as quickly or easily elsewhere. I guess that sounds rather selfish of myself, but in the end... if it came down to you having what you wanted in life or myself being able to easily learn something, I'd just have to figure out another way of trying to learn something. Anyways, back to the video.

💯 on hobbies. Hobbies are for personal fulfillment combined with external connection. Now, you don’t have to personally interact often, but can find connection through social media. It makes me uncomfortable how happy I feel when content creators I follow respond directly to my comments.

Absolutely! Have those connections at all is helpful at feeling less isolated and less alone. Just finding your people and occasionally hanging or chatting is rad.

Just wanted to say how smooth the transition from front facing camera to the overhead shot is, how did you accomplish it? I've always questioned the pros and cons of cross-platform posting. Those are some really good points you made about it and potentially reducing the overall performance of a video. 🎉🎉

You can shut off embeds on your (public) videos and then reupload an unlisted version to your channel to post on your site. That way at least if you find out one of those scummy aggregate sites are stealing your URL's directly from your page you can just delete the unlisted videos and mess up their pages. Chances are they won't even bother trying stealing from your website though if the ones publicly on your YT channel are all set to no-embed.

Sometimes doing videos is a way of getting AWAY from people/family. I have a little different outlook when it comes to the metrics of success. The numbers of subs / views is the fun part of it. However, I don't look at that as the success or failure metric. To me, the look, sound, and presentation are where I judge if I'm doing better or worse. I'm more critical about my videos than most of the people that watch my videos. I personally think my videos are horrible. Lighting, shot framing and presentation are always off to me. I setup and breakdown the video rig for every video and it never gets setup the same way twice in an effort to try and find the "right" combination of things. Haven't found it yet. One day... one day...

Agree, the need to fit in is primary. However, I don't believe we're looking for other "weirdos", we're looking to reach everyone. Call me insane, but even at 63 I believe everyone would get me if I could just get things right. Again, I recognize that's impossible. I believe the same for you. If you got it just right everyone would watch your videos and buy a microphone that suits them. I believe they should! :) The truth is, the deeper the interest, the smaller the audience. Many hobbyists have deep interests with small audiences. That doesn't mean they don't want to try to reach everyone, as you point out. And here's the rub, how can we know what audience we have until we try as hard as possible. Which you point out. Sorry I don't have time to listen to this whole podcast and maybe you touch on that.
