I personally took a break because of Anet balancing decision. The kind of balancing where they would say X class deals too much damage so we are changing the numbers but another class dealing the same damage or better is instead left untouched or buffed. The kind of balancing where they state they will buff unused skill /trait to encourage people to use them only for them to buff skill that are already being used. In the meantime there are new games that are being released, new content that are being added to old game so I am less and less encouraged to return to the game

I agree with you partly on ff14 having a better story. Like just looking at the writing itself, then ff14 clearly blows gw2 out of the water. But gw2 always did a pretty good job at presenting you the story. Making you Play and experience the story rather than just read it. And the maps with their long meta chains and all the side content like strikes and fractals expand on that world, rather than just being a set for the story. FF14 has so many moments in the main story where you just boringly read whats happening, rather than actually experiencing it first hand. Alot of filler dialogue to flesh out the story and when you do get your hands on the game, its very repetitive dungeons that follow the same wall to wall formula since ages. And since the dungeons always must come at every odd level, they sometimes feel a little forced and out of place too.

Hey Cafdad! 🥳 I play with two game veterans, I’m a novice, we all dropped the game for a year post SOTO. we got finally weapon specialisation out of the story this week and I don’t think any of us are in a hurry to return having done that. I’m team positive but both my mates are team neg on Janthir. I like the idea the team was getting into the groove with SOTO and that they would have improved the new formula based on feedback, and with the emphasis on mounted combat between the two expacs I’m envisioning this giant mounted battle that could reach new heights for both story and meta events coming in the future. And just llike you I thought it felt more like a paid living world season than a full expansion. Their old model is much better using living world as filler DLC to set up expansions. In terms of lore Janthir wilds looks promising we get to see the white mantle back and its focused in centrel Tyria. Also map wise im getting real tired of drizzlewood meta focused maps. I want hearts and random events that arent tied to a meta. It gives the player more meaning to explore the world. If anyone is on the fence for the upcoming expansion wait until the 2nd major update before buying it.

A couple of thoughts I think are important to consider: 1.) It's probably unfair to compare SotO to the other expansions... it was developed faster, was sold for about 50% less, and was identified by ANet as a mini-expansion. Whatever criticisms or accolades you give it, it is truly more like the beginning of Icebrood Saga or like Living World Season 2 than Path of Fire or Heart of Thorns. 2.) ANet did put out a blog post detailing what they claim to have learned from SotO and much of it highlighted the negative aspects of the story... They stated they were too ambitious and didn't give their narrative the space to breathe, needing to get to the major plot points too quickly (this is my summary, not their exact words). Hopefully they take those lessons to heart. I am cautiously optimistic as well; I think JW will give us much insight into how this new designer team (who have really only been in place since End of Dragons) will iterate and improve the game.

Also most of the meta events for me anyway were not that fun compared to the prior ones in other expansions. I just sort of fell out of it, went from logging in and playing to logging in for the vault, to logging in for a few daily astral acclaim to just, not logging in. Will I return? Probably, not sure when. But I probably will. For Janthir wilds? Maybe! Spears to me are not hyping me that much, maybe for the warrior it makes sense, but as a Reaper? Not as stoked. I think the major pull for me right now to play again is continue working on my legendries, specifically Exordium which consumes much of my time.

Seems to me SoTO was a half ass story that was only meant to have 3-6 months' worth of content for the old dogs and just enough for news guys like me to get lil hooked. Started working towards the obsidian armor and I got to say this game is really fun when you're just running around aimlessly but as soon as I try focusing on the legendary grind I just want to quit and do something else. Raids were ok, strikes were really fun and fractals for me were meh, PvP and WvW are tons of fun even without a Warclaw. But in September it won't matter because Space Marine 2 is coming out I won't be doing anything else for another 6 months to a year.

Janthir Wilds has me... intrigued, at best. I dont have high hopes; they haven't *really* told a good story since base GW2, with the possible exceptions of generous chunks of Path of Fire and small bits of Living World Season 1. And even then, no part of Guild Wars 2 (perhaps GW1 too) can touch FF14 Heavensward on a story level. What Janthir Wilds feels like is ArenaNet finally taking time to address some long-requested things, namely spears, housing, and White Mantle, but doing so in a way that requires the absolute minimum effort from their team. It is one weapon type, for all classes, using skins that already exist. They're not interested in putting out "amazing", their goal is "good enough". Which is unfortunate.

Even some of the diehard fans I know are wary of the new expansion, so I agree that they can't really afford to have another "meh" expansion, *especially* being released in the same season as Gold Road, Dawntrail, and The War Within. SotO writting makes IBS look good. They had me interested in the begining with this eldritch horror, but after Nayos it all crumbled into a very generic, very human drama motivated story, very much mundane in all aspects but the form of the characters and in all aspects it was just weak. Who ever was at the helm of story and narrative during HoT all the way to LS4 is clearly long gone as the writting in this expansion is amateurish at best. I've been taking part in this particular skinner box since Beta. For every one thing they do that I enjoy they do 20 that frustrate and disappoint. So much so that I quit for 4 or 5 years and came back. Players should have the choice to play the way we enjoy playing. Example- mounts should not be negated anywhere- we spend the gold, effort and time to unlock them- If we don't like jumping puzzles let us use our mounts to complete them. The content has to be worth the players individual effort for the rewards earned in order to sell the next expansion. A players time and effort should be held to a much higher regard. Too much of the new content feels like clocking in to work, unrewarding, unpaid digital chores. In 2024, I'm still running Dragonfall and Bitterfrost because they are the few places that the reward is aligned with the amount of time and effort I have to put in to complete that content. plus "rng".

You should remember that GW2 has the greatest Build variety in the Genre! The quality of the Story is also far above FF14, which may be more extensive but is so useless and poorly thought out! Look forward to 4 hours of running around saying goodbye to 7+ characters. Or stupid conversations about a character's outfit JUST to keep Players in the Game for a long time. In FF14 you see Sequence -- in GW2 you play the Sequence yourself and are in Focus and your not a henchman!

GW2 is like a Ferrari in a parking lot. It's nice and shiny. But in the end it will always be a husk being neglected while it could have been on the road outpacing all the other stale MMORPGs. ANET consistently brings in new content only to abandon it. Dungeons were quickly abandoned. Fractals still get updates but the last three are so bad nobody even does them when they are a daily. Five years since the last Raid got added and they are FINALLY making a new one. Strikes were really good during EoD but all the strikes before and after were terrible (CM Cerus was great). Open world has gotten stale and boring with health sponge bosses and a total lack of mechanics. Class design got so homogenized that you basically choose a flavor/color palette at character creation rather than picking a unique class with strengths and weaknesses. The story has always been bouncing between horrible and passable with SotO starting to dig after reaching rock bottom. The mastery system which originally was pretty good is just a bloated carcass of pointless abilities and passives that barely add something to the areas they were designed for apart from the superior mount system that was just stolen by World of Warcraft. ANET is coasting on the core design of the game. They consistently work on side projects that get nuked from orbit or by daddy NCsoft only to scramble back to GW2 to give it another life support infusion and slather stuff on the Gem Store while posting an apology forum thread and firing 90% of its employees. SotO was so bad that 5/6 of the massive community guilds I was in completely dissolved. The one remaining is on lifesupport with people hoping Janthir will bring back players. But what does it even offer at all? Janthir adding housing might be great. A new raid might be great. Two-Three PvE maps added might be great. BUT IT"S NOT ENOUGH. That means the playerbase will have F. All to do for 9 out of 12 months a year. Their current content cadence is too slow. PvP players haven't had a meaningful update since the launch of the game. WvW Alliances also barely did anything for how WvW feels/plays and they haven't had a new WvW map for about as long as the raid players have left the game for. I love the game. I truly do. I would recommend it to EVERYONE to just experience it once because there's so much content and activities and stuff to work towards as a new player. But as a veteran who has no goals left I just wish the game was managed by a company that had the management and funds to take it out of the parking lot.

The spear mechanics look interesting, but I'm most curious about the map design since GW2's main strength (imo) is the open world. As someone who came from FFXIV to GW2, the story has never been a draw for me. I just really enjoy the MMO feel of doing a lot of things as a group, in an open world, with interesting traversal. It's strongest where FFXIV is weakest, which makes it a great game to balance out FFXIV burn out.

My GW2 concern is the in-game LFG system, it needs to be updated. Currently, most active GW2 players reach a point where everything naturally migrates to discord servers/static groups, basically far away from public groups. Meanwhile, on the NA server, the in-game LFG system tends to be empty/inactive. Folks have moved away from using it as their primary method for assembling groups. Let's say you just finished work and have limited time, maybe only a few hours to play. Think how much more likely you’d be to play GW2 if the LFG had a modern, clean, organized UI, if it was faster to use, if it had automation tools to add/locate other interested players, and if the commander had more tools/visibility for managing their group. Helping players easily connect with one another to complete the MMO's game content is vital stuff - this shouldn't be overlooked, imo.

I see SOTO suffering from the same problems Living World Season 1 and Heart of Thorns suffered from: Basically it's a rough start for something new to ANet. Chances are they tried to change up some teams, programming schedules, dynamics, etc and what we got from this "measured release of expansion" is what we got. The writing has been on the wall since Living World. This company has a problem making an expansion while also trying to fight off the lack of content that makes players just scream "Dead Game" the moment something doesn't release every month. Yes that was hyperbole, yes I'm saying it tongue in cheek, no I'm also not being hyperbolic, some folks do act that way. They tried something new with the Icebrood Saga when they thought GW2 was done for after LW Season 4, we all saw how that panned out. So I think what they're trying to do is have their expansion team do that instead of that B team they had. I'm going to give Janthir Wilds a shot because typically their second swing at something gets better, plus I loved the idea of Janthir. I've always wanted it in an expansion, yes this is cope. I want my Janthir, hush. I am also curious about the Homestead, it's been over 1,000 years but we finally might get some home node worth working on. I fear it'll be like all the other Hub City spots or that dirty Elonian cave I forgot its name, but maybe it'll be more useful. Even if it's just "Guild Decorating for one person" that's something better than what we have now.

I play gw2 very on and off. It's a casual mmo where it's easy to leave but also easy to come back into, and I greatly appreciate that aspect of the game. I think that's what makes gw2 a surviving game. It won't ever really have the highest concurrent players like wow but it'll serve as a home that players can always come back to. I think gw2 will survive for a long time, it's casual friendliness being the main reason. I enjoy gw2 story and lore and EoD wrapped up a DECADE long story. The dragons were gw2's identity for a long time and now they have to find a new one. I thought SOTO would introduce that new long term story identity, but it didn't. I was actually pleasantly surprised by that and enjoyed SOTO as a stand alone event. As a lore enjoyer, I liked that they finally explained what happened to zojja, explored aspects of other races like the mursaat, dwarves, seers, and the new kryptis. So maybe the story of SOTO wasn't as exciting but I found things to like about it. I suspect Janthir Wilds will go more into explaining background lore for the White Mantle and what not so I'm still looking forward it.

I was 100% all in with the actual content of the expansion *before* the patches. I think the problem is that the post SOTO patches showed some poor signs, specifically the content design. When you have bad meta events, mid maps and boring repeatable content; ALL things that GW2 has always been known for being good at, you know you have a problem. The story for me was actually good until the patches too. SOTO was quite good story wise, but the follow up and travel to Nayos was like "Huh?" There is good in this expansion but there is far more learning opportunity here than good things.

I've only been playing GW2 somewhat consistently for about two years now, but across all the stories SoTO's campaign was the first in which I got legitimately bored progressing because of the quest design. So much so that it was the first time I stopped doing the story when it was new (the second update) and just went back to working on other in-game goals. I'm honestly not expecting much from Jathnir Wilds story, but given that some of the major concerns about SoTO's pacing were addressed in a blog post awhile back; perhaps JW will have potential to be fine (hard to say if any future expansion's story will truly be "good" again with a single year time constraint).

The fact that you called Zojja Taimi kinda speaks for it self with how forgettable her reintroduction into the story was. A bit strange that they spent so much time marketing her return only to shelve her as a part of the 2nd story update. I forgot she returned too until you mentioned Taimi.

Nope. Played the entirety of GW1 last year before me and the wife moved on to GW2... and while we loved moments of GW2's story, it had major problems with tone, pace, and player agency. GW1 didn't have the deepest writing. But what it got right was that the writing, for the most part, reinforced the heroic journey the players go on - it existed entirely to motivate you to press on across the world. Even when the writing wasn't particularly great, the journey felt epic. GW2 was very, very self-indulgent and almost constantly told the player "Wait here. Go there. Stand at this position. Listen to this NPC. Say these words. Have these feelings." That last one isn't even a joke - when you get to that bit in End of Dragons, and the game is like... here, go and place some flowers on a memorial to a character that we're telling you that you have feelings about. No, there is no option to say you have no feelings about them; you have feelings, because the script says so. Oh, don't remember who that character is? Don't care, we literally put the words in your mouth. And it only got worse over time. When we reached Secrets of The Obscure, and we had to listen to Zojja say the word "me" like 20 times after a major character had been killed off, and our objective was literally to go and listen to her whining, we actually gave up on the game.

I think the problem with soto was how all the content was built around farming for the legendary armor. Thats the main issue. Even though its an open world armor set, it never really was the main focus of all the other expansions. It was an option for people who wanted to pursue it. But other than the easier skyscale mount and just trying to farm up metas for gold ( which other previous living world seasons and expansions are better at the moment ) , they didnt really add anything for those currencies to be used for or have any other cool unlockables for more diversity in the content.

So, i see the story hook starting off with the fact that the player character was made a member of the shining blade in an earlier living world season. The shining blade activates "the commander" for a mission that leads to Janthir. SOTO had a few leads to previous characters, but it was purely a side story. The role of the commander had a feel like Indiana jones and the last crusade- the storyline would have progressed the same way if the commander, now the "wayfinder" wasn't a part of it. Don't get me wrong, it got us past the B- team feel of the living world team- but SOTO never made me feel connected to the characters introduced within it.

I want to play the game and unlock stuff ingame. FF XIV has also spoiled me when it comes to side content without jumping through hoops (granted i'm perfectly happy with a small house, that even on my Server (one of the all-time full ones) was quite easy to get). It’s hard for most MMOs to compete with FF14 in terms of the way it presents it story. The way the games gives you cutscenes, epic solo que moments, how it ties the dungeon in, and then how wraps it up with an epic trial is unmatched. It’s so good that main quest in other games leave a lot to be desired. Outside of FF14. The only other two that comes close is ESO and WoW Also the last GW2 expansion lacks excitement as well as this one imo. No new classes, playable races, elite specializations. I think that’s what people really want. It makes what’s called and expansion feel more like DLC. Especially when competitors are giving you so much more with their expansion.
