I started carrying a knife for self defense because when I was 19 I was mugged for my bike by a kid with a knife. Its been over a decade since that happened and I still carry a knife but its not for self-defense. Its a tool first, it's a tool second, its a tool third, maybe its an art piece fourth and lastly its a self-defense weapon as a very last resort in a "do or die" situation. Unless you're trained on how to fight with a knife, don't use one. It could turn a fist fight into a death match, for both you and the other guy. Not to mention the legal system will want to weigh in on the aftermath. Since its your knife the burden of proof lies on you. Memorize this phrase when asked why you carry a knife: "I carry my knife as a tool and in case of emergencies." Do NOT admit to carrying it as a self-defense weapon. It will be used against you in a court of law. Good video man. I gotta get a flashlight at some point. Knives are useful but in my everyday life a flashlight would come in handy way more often.

Unpopular opinion, but I think it's also a good thing to be carrying a multi tool of some sort with you for tasks that a pocket knife can't do or would have difficulty doing. A pocket knife is super useful for basic everyday tasks. But I feel that you can do more with a Multi tool with its wide variety of select mini tools in it (varying heavily depending on what you have & what make). Keep in mind, by no means am I telling anyone to _not_ buy a knife or buy this and not that. Please check with your local state laws and regulations before making a purchase. I live in Texas, so I carry a Leatherman Super Tool 300, a Böker Kalashnikov, and a small Olight.

Went for a one hour walk at a National Park that turned into a 24 hour survival situation. When darkness came, I was exhausted, couldn't see squat. Spent the night in sub-freezing temperatures. IF I had been carrying a flashlight, I could have continued and be back in my vehicle within an hour or so. Now, I always carry a flashlight. It's come in handy several times since. Always carried a pocketknife. Then I found out a pocket knife isn't much of a substitute for a flashlight. :) I carry both now.

Interesting, and agreed, instead of some 'yuge' _Multitool,_ most of which I never use, would rather carry just my own 'essentials', starting with any good quality combo serrated/plain edge 3" folding 'flipper' knife equipped with a pocket clip. But also custom-equipped with a lighter, scissors, and a little 'button'-style LED lite... all thx to the magic of some strategically-placed Velcro. And actually kinda surprised that no one has come up with some sorta modular 'mix-n-match' system, for designing a 'customizable' multi-tool.

It depends on what I am doing. If I am hiking/backpacking I'll be carrying a small Swiss Army Classic and a Fenix LD02. My EDC in my regular life is an Olight M1T Raider and either an assisted open Kershaw pocket knife or most recently a Kabar TDI. I live in the middle of a national forest and it gets pretty dark, so a good flashlight is pretty useful. I probably use it every day. A knife is very useful, and yeah, people don't realize how useful until they start carrying one. I also would say that a knife and a flashlight are definitely self defense tools. A bright flashlight can be blinding and can buy you a few seconds, which could be a life saver in a situation where you are already at a disadvantage. It can also make sure that you see your target if you are unlucky enough to ever have to use your firearm.

@BackcountryExposure

I am a little surprised to hear as a first responder you have NEVER needed a knife. That said, everyone does things differently and just because you haven't needed or used one, doesn't mean that others don't also need it. It's a choice, and for me often comes in very handy to have it on my person.
@robertwilliams5015

I guess the difference is I don't typically run into the type of things people seem to be describing in the comments on a regular basis. Certainly not with enough regularity to carry around a cutting tool. I guess I was just more curious about why or how some people seem to encounter so many cutting tasks or places that need to be illuminated throughout an average day. I get the fact that it's a choice, I was really just wondering if people actually felt like they needed these tools or were they kinda making up uses for them because they happened to have them. I completely get carrying around one for self defense or if your occupation or hobby requires the use of one, but it's simply incredible to me that average people actually encounter situations where a knife or flashlight is required on a regular basis. Again, no disrespect intended, I literally was just curious about the lifestyles and occupations of some of the people that use knives regularly.

There is a very small Swiss Army knife that also has a light built into it. It’s super convenient and as far as opening envelopes or boxes all you need is a small sharp edge. Any cutting tools I need at work are provided for me. I also keep a nice Leatherman in my car. If I wanted to carry something for self defense, I'd argue that some Fox pepper spray is a much safer and more effective option. I think I've been taken away from knives since moving to the city. Also I grew up on stories from my uncle who lived during the junta period and was frequently arrested and beaten by police. If he carried a knife he might well have been killed. He has been carrying one since but it would make me uneasy. Anyway, he is a hiker like yourself so he got me a Swiss Army with various functions. I just found I didn't need any of them. Parcels will be at my house anyway so I will be taking them to the kitchen. Letters I have a letter opener on the windowsill they sit on. I carried it for a time, but found it's just excess weight. I agree 100% on the flashlight, I often drop things in dark places, or even if I wake up at night for the toilet, then I'll be using that so not to wake everyone up. Outside I'll carry my phone as I don't want bulky pockets, but I have 4 flashlights in my house for varying uses, one is extremely large and from when I lived in the countryside. I believe it is an invaluable tool.

Well men have been carrying knives of some kind - before metalworking i.e. the iron age we carried sharpened stones or flints - for millenia. Also a means of making fire i.e. a lighter but being a smoker of course I alsways carry one. But these two things are what define humans as being separate from animals, specifically because we don't have large cutting/slashing claws, or fur to keep us warm. So I'd say those 2 things are essential looking at human history of which the last 100 years or so represent only a fraction of a percent. As to a flashlight, or torch as we call them here in the UK, they're useful and I've just bought a tiny little Olight which fits in the coin pocket of my jeans together with a small Clipper lighter and a Victorinox Classic, all in matching black. But if I had to leave one it would be the torch, the other 2 are indispensable for me. I should add I also carry a larger Victorinox on a suspension clip with my keys, and a mid-sized multitool on a belt clip.

I now Cary a small pouch with a emergence rain poncho, and will soon put some type of utility knife in it. I do carry a large survival knife. Its hollow inside of it which means you can storage things inside of it. I have a fishing line and hook inside my knife! isnt that awesome. Its a large blade so it should look intimidating enough if to potentially scare people away but il rather run away if possible and have a knife as a last stand scenario. On its everyday use i dont use it all the time but there is always a time for a sharp object if you need to help someone cutting open something or whatever you can think off. No wonders why we always had knifes back in the day. In sweden it was actually a tradition to give your child a knife for everyday use. I do carry other things though on the other hand which sees daily use. A sewing kit, a lighter and a medic pack if someone gets hurt and some tools like a screwdriver with different bits so you can fix anything while you are out and about in the world!

@@BackcountryExposure I saw a old man who was bleeding on the sidewalk holding his head and i regretted not being able to help Beyond calling 112 so that kind of inspired me to add medic pack to things i always carry so i dont have to feel so helpless anymore during those situations. Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you had the means to help someone in need?

To see stuff and cut stuff, is this really questioned enough to need explanation ? If it is you hang around the wrong people.

I tried carrying a knife for a while but found no use for one. I am not scared of getting attacked because I live in a nice area and I know self defense. My work doesn't require me to use a knife either so I ended up just carrying a knife for no reason.

Self-defense should be the LAST reason to carry a knife unless you are trained in knife fighting. You're better off protecting yourself with a pen.

I was raised in rural Michigan, spending most of my time outdoors with family who always carried a knife and taught me proper use. I've worked in an office for 30 years and always have my small Swiss Army knife and tactical flashlight in my computer bag. Co-workers joke and call me MacGuyver - these tools frequently are used.

My knife is my last option when it comes to self defense. #1 - pepper spray. #2 - concealed carry gun. #3 - knife. If I was in a struggle, I'd use my knife to get to my gun. But if at all possible, I'd much rather use pepper spray and get out of the situation than ever have to pull my firearm. I always either have a flashlight on me, or have one in my car in the center console, and in my edc small pouch and in my get home bag. I also like to have a small multitool on me as well, and a pry bar on my keychain.

I carry a knife mainly for self defense. I used to have a working flashlight on my keychain. Thanks for the reminder. Love your set of blades.

As a guy that carries both daily and has for 20 years, I can't see not carrying them. I use them. Those who don't and don't know why I do, ask to borrow mine. I will loan my flashlight, but not my knife. (Noncarriers don't know how to use a good sharp knife) When I'm in the woods, I look into caves, logs, and other dark places using my flashlight (WOWTAC A1) and I use my pocket knife (Old Timer Bear tooth trapper) for all small cutting tasks.

I was at a function the other day with a bunch of people (church function). We were putting together some packages for homeless. I pulled out my knife to open some soap boxes because a lady couldn't get the wrap off. She looked at me and said, "I asked my kids to do it but they didn't bring their knives." That was music to my ears and gives me hope that not all people see them as pure evil weapons. Great vid.

You blew it when you said you first thought of carrying a knife for self defense. Unless you are fully trained in knife combat this is a very dangerous mindset. Yes i watched and you said the opposite later but the damage is done. From the title i thought this was going to be good, pity.
