I have been riding a 1992 XR250R for 5 years. When I got that bike it didn't run (it was actually in a bunch of pieces) and it needed a tonne of work. My dad and I rebuilt the engine, replaced all the consumable parts (chain, brakes, bearings etc...), buffed up the plastics, painted the frame and a year later I had a wicked learner trail bike. The original bike was free; it was my uncle's and he just wanted it out of his garage. The rebuild was about $1500 CAD and we did all the work ourselves except for having the head machined. The bike is a tank, it needs very little maintenance and I don't care if I crash it because it is old as f... I just bought a new (to me) bike this week. I was debating getting a new bike, I had the money to buy it cash but ended up getting a used one instead. I am now the proud owner of a 2013 Husky TE310R. I bought used because: 1) The price you settle on is the price you pay (other than taxes when you register it). 2) The biggest drop in depreciation happens when a bike leaves the dealership, so not my problem. 3) I want to have 2 bikes. I leave the old bike at the cottage and the new bike is for road and trail. 4) All the factory recalls and common faults have already been replaced. 5) The bike already has an enduro bash plate, radiator guard and hand guards. 6) I paid 1/4 the OTD price for a bike with 3500km on it. 7) If I decide to sell the bike in a couple of years I will recoup most of the cost. When buying a used bike you do have to know what you are looking for to ensure you get a bike that hasn't been abused and poorly maintained. It is best to take your time and make sure you are buying from someone who is on the up and up. Good news, the internet is very helpful with this and if you're not sure take someone with you who knows about dirt bikes.

Hey man I really enjoy your channel and what you represent. That you don't have to have a brand new bike to have fun or even be competitive. Half the fun for me is working on them and building them into a bike of your own and it brings me some sort of satisfaction. I feel like alot of people get caught up and bombarded with all the ads for the newest thing on the market and how most dirtbike channels and magazines just focus on the newest and most expensive bikes. Granted my bike is a 2015 kx450f it's somewhat newer but I absolutely love it and have built it into my own bike and wouldn't trade it for anything. Cheers man keep up the great content and I look forward to more videos on used bikes and also your rmz450 build 💪

Wow! I did not suspect that my comment would appear on this video. Very cool. I just hope my english was not too bad since I am french Canadian. :) As you mentioned, one of the reason why a 10 years old bike is still relevant today, unless you race at a higher level, is because the bikes have surely been refined but did not evolve so much in the past years. I remember how different it was in the seventies. After high school, I got a 73 Husky CR 250 in 78. It was already totally outdated. The newer suspensions had 12'' of travel while mine had 3''1/2 at the rear... It was underpowered, bad brakes, etc. And this bike was 5 years old at the time. Nowadays, a 10 years old is still very potent for most amateur. Here is an interesting video of an ex pro national motocross racer giving his point of view on a 12 years old 450 bike. Comparing to a new bike, he says that he can do similar lap times with this bike... and this test makes him realize that the motorcycles did not improve that much lately. If it's true for a pro level rider, it must be true for most of us.

I'm just getting back to off-road riding after 20 something years and I set myself a budget because...I know the dirt bike I get is going get thrashed....lol. I started looking on Cycle Trader, Craig's List, local dealers and anywhere else I could find used dual-sports. I could not find the right bike at the right price, in fact every bike I was interested in was either way over priced or beat to death. Then I discovered Pitster Pro, specifically the XTR 250 T4...As I looked into it I realized two things, 1. these aren't the typical Chinese dirt bikes and 2. its a perfect fit for my needs and budget. I figured how bad can one be and would one of these new be any worse than a 10-15 year old thumped on, Japanese or Euro bike?? So far my XTR is impressive for the cost, its solidly built, with good bars, rims, tires and kick-ass suspension with a tractor of an engine . Yea its got some cheap-ish parts like the chain, levers\mounts, switch gear and the seat is a torture device but these are easy to remedy. I came in under my budget :) so far the XTR seems like a great alternative used. Once I get the rust out of me....I even plan to run it in local NETRA endros and turkey runs :D

I agree somewhat with what you are saying. Buying used is always a risk and if your going to spend 4-5k on a new 4stroke you might aswell spend a little more and get brand new. That way you know what has and hasn't been done to it. I was able to pick up a 2017 250sxf brand new OTD 7500 which was a steal. Its all about which dealer you buy from and calling everywhere to get the best deals. I'm loving my 250sxf with the TC and map switch and the amazing e-start. As you stated in a previous video, for us folks in California, older bikes will pretty much be the only option if we wish to ride in any areas that aren't private tracks or clubs due to the elimination of the red sticker program. As much as I love my 2000 EXC 200 that I bought for $2,000 two years ago, I would have much preferred to buy a newer model and pay $3,000-$4,000. I've had to put a good amount of work into my bike, but I love it and it suits my style of riding perfectly. I also didn't want to get stuck with a bike that wasn't green sticker and keep me from riding in the majority of OHV parks from May-September. Another issue that many seem to ignore when factoring in the costs of a new bike is all the protective equipment that needs to be added and any custom suspension work that may be needed to be performed to suit the rider. I fear there may come a day in the next few years where we won't be able to ride any form of dirt bike anywhere in California.
@dirtniron
6 жыл бұрын
I have similar worry about the future of OHV here in Cali. I was thinking to get 2002 YZ250 2 stroke and build it up, thats last year green sticker 2 stroke. what do you think?
@daddister7471
6 жыл бұрын
Yes! I think that would be a very wise decision. If I ever need more power in the future, I'll be going with a 2000-2002 YZ250 or EXC250. Surprisingly, the market for older green sticker bikes isn't very demanding.

Not saying you can't find some low hours well cared for bikes sometimes but it really seems harder and harder anymore. I just look at it like this if you buy new, you know you aren't messing with somebody else's headache or amateur mechanical ability. I know new isn't an option for everybody but if your buying used have somebody with you that knows what they are talking about for sure.

I’m in the market for a dirt bike right now. I don’t really see any less than 1500. It’s making me think, damn, why should I spend 2 grand on a ten year old bike that I have no knowledge of and have no idea how it was cared for when I can buy a brand new one for a couple thousand more. Obviously that price doesn’t apply to all of them. But I’m looking for a TTR230 so I can get used to the feel of being on a bike. A 2005 is in the thousand and up range and a brand new one is only about 3200 dollars!!! Idk man, I don’t wanna buy a bike for two grand just to find out that the thing has barely any life left

I hate to disagree because we are very like minded guys but 2 things have changed a lot in the last few years that do make a big difference. Weight and fuel injection, my new 350 ktm has more power than all the old 450s but weighs in less than all the old 250s. Yea it sucks to shell out $10k for a new bike but if you can find a good deal and make it work financially, I feel it is worth it. Nothing against buying used since all ive bought are used bikes up until now but if you can find a great deal on a new bike and make it work for you, you wont regret it.

One of the reasons I love this channel is he's not shilling premium products and new bikes. If you go over to the dirt bike channel he's constantly pounding away about how you should buy a brand new bike. The also only tests Euro bikes with very few exceptions. If it was really about dirt bikes he would be talking about used KDX200s and Yamahas in this economy.

@@dirtniron The other thing I like about this channel is you actually reply. There's lots of channels that test new bikes other than the one we were talking about. That one in particular just seems to be nothing but a money grab. and I think it's extraordinarily dishonest in the way that used bike buying options are presented.

Or people say the bike has a rebuild but dont even do the barrel. And if the barrel is effd you gone keep paying to get your bike fixed or have to buy a new barrel. Just becomes a headache. Bought a ktm 125 2008 had a rebuild with new piston still had problems then got a new barrel put in and still had problems. better off new i say

Great channel 😀👍 love it... I have husqvarna wr 125 2008. Bike is in good condition, but it runs terrible. It boggs, isn't really responsive to throttle and spark plug is black, tons of oil comming from the exhaust... When I change jetting nothing changes. Also chcecked the float height, but if anything flost looks too low.Bike got new vforce3 reeds, new cranck seals (to be sure it is not burning trans.oil) I really don't what is wrong with it ? Do you have an advice? Thx

i buy my bikes new. I save and save until i can afford it. I keep my bikes forever, i would never sell them. There's something about knowing the whole history of a bike, especially if you will keep them for life. I still have a 1986 Dt 175 that my father bought brand new and passed onto me when i turned 13. It is in perfect running condition and still looks brand new. If you plan to keep the bike, than buy new and save yourself a lot of trouble with fixing someone else's mess.

If you buy a used dirt bike you will pay more for it in repairs costing more than a new bike would. If you also have all the time and money to fix up used. Your still better off getting new dirt bike because it will still be cheaper parts cost several thousands of dollars. Great idea but it would have cost me less buying new instead of old and fixing it up. Also if that model of dirt bike is discontinued good luck getting new parts for it because you will not be able to. 2001 yz250f is destine to the grave after it breaks down important parts are no longer available.

before you replace the seals try to clean them, there is very inexpensive product that does pretty good job, you dont need to remove anything, just slide down dust seal and clean the oil seal. do some search on youtube for "sealmate" I need to make video about it too
