Now the law has changed. But I think it depends on the state you live in. I have been living in Germany for 3 years. Today I just applied for German citizenship without having to renounce my citizenship. I choose to have dual citizenship. I hope you can get German citizenship soon 😊

With a C1 certification of the German Language you only need to have lived 3 years to be entitled to German Citizenship as per the new immigration law that was just passed by the parliament just today.

First of all. As far back as 2 years ago the German law allows u to have dual nationality even before it became possible to have dual nationality they still give you the opportunity to have 2 nationalities by applying for what is called "genemigung" which means u can give them a good reason why u need 2 nationalities and often times it's approved and u get a certificate of approval which cost about 280 euro 💶 and with that u can go ahead and apply for the German passport while still keeping ur old one... That's what I did years ago before moving to America 🇺🇸 from Germany 🇩🇪 even though I was born in Nigeria 🇳🇬 with a nigerian passport and at the moment I'm having 3 nationalities/passport in my possession.

That's completely understandable. I feel the same. I just can't give it up regardless of whatever thoughts or feelings are attached to JA. It'll always be home and to give that up would feel like removing apart of my identity. If I'm to settle anywhere outside of JA 'permanently', it'd have to be somewhere that offers such an option. Otherwise it's a no.

Yeah growing up in Jamaica with constant references to USA, UK and Canada, I definitely thought it was normal but yeah best to research before settling. 😊

European countries are not as open to dual citizenship Estonia , Austria , Slovenia , Netherlands are so of them , some are less strict then other but for me I would give it a few years like in Norway and Germany they went from basically no dual citizenship to full dual citizenship

It will definitely change in Germany! The question is just when. Netherlands seems to be actually quite relaxed about it because I have friends living there who are quite surprised that the law is this way in Germany.

As a German I would say it's absolutely the right thing to wait until the law is changed. If it turns out that it isn't, after all, you can still think about what to do. Or if your status in Germany becomes problematic before the law is changed. But if there is no reason to hurry, don't. Things may go bad in Europe, such as another rise of Fascism, and you may need the option to return quickly and with no hassle. Don't give this up if you don't have to.
@OshandoJohnson

I didn’t even think about that perspective too! That’s a good point indeed that things can change here! I’ll definitely wait and hopefully it works in my favor. 😊

@@OshandoJohnson I hope so, too. I think the odds are good. The old principle that you can only ever have one nationality except in very rare circumstances has long been given up. (It was doomed from the moment when nationality could be inherited from the mother as well, not just from the father.) So the restrictions don't make sense. And we really need immigration. Currently, the _average_ age of a German with no immigration background is 47 years! Every year about 50% more people retire from work than start their first job, and this is probably going to continue for decades because the German population is shrinking so fast. You can't maintain a society that way. The average German woman has only just over 1.5 children. So we need immigrants who are still of working age. That also has the side effect of increasing our birth rates, because immigrants themselves and their children tend to have significantly more children. (But not their grandchildren.) Our politicians know this (even if the right-wing ones pretend it's not true because it helps them get votes). And if we want to get the more skilled immigrants, we need to offer good conditions for immigration.
@OshandoJohnson

@@johaquila wow I knew the population was aging but I didn’t know the numbers! Thanks for the stats! As you said to fill the gap, they definitely have to offer better conditions and it’s good to see they’re actually doing it!

Many born Jamaicans land in Jamaica with a US, Canadian, UK passport everyday. Giving up your Jamaican passport in order to better fulfill your goals isn't a hard choice to be honest. Sadly if the Jamaican gov't had the choice to sell out their own ppl for money, they would do it in a heartbeat.

Not necessarily. The bureaucracy for marrying in Germany is insane for everyone who was born abroad or with a parent who was born abroad, even if they are Germans. There is a lot of documents they ask for that in some countries don't even exist or at least are very hard to get, and you need official translations and apostilles for everything. You can get around all this nonsense by marrying in Denmark, where they are way more reasonable. The German authorities then have to accept it. This doesn't really have much to do with nationality.
