As a seventh generation (EX) Mormon, I have to say that your observations are not only hilarious, they are spot on and painfully observant! I also could never stomach the incessant Mormon crying, as if that brings people closer to deity. 🙄 As for your question, many Mormons are hated for their “us versus them“ mentality; they believe they are above everyone else around them, they are more pure, they are more holy, and they are chosen, yet they also ostracize and put others down if they don’t express keen interest in Mormonism or, God forbid, if they dare to leave. Sanctimony is never a good look. The Mormon Church is also reviled for its racist, misogynist, homophobic, patriarchal, and sexist beliefs and practices.

Please do more! Those was great!! To answer your question at the end: I think Mormons aren't hated individually as people, but as a collective group or organization. One Mormon is kind and thoughtful. A grouf of Mormons is a cohesive homogeneous group (with the Mormon face!) and it's hard to fit into that. Also, the organization itself has some pretty exclusive and offensive beliefs. Individual members can soften their stance, but the church is unbending and doesn't care.

For reference I’ve lived in Utah my entire life. I’ve never been Mormon. My thoughts: I think Mormons are universally thought of as very nice but very gullible (gold plates that were taken back to heaven by an angel… 😅come on!) In the early church years 1830-1844 Mormons traveled from state to state to stay one step ahead of the law. Joseph Smith was a well known con man. His gullible followers were swept into his new religion with arrogant fervor. The “one true church” arrogance plus the persistent Us vs Them mindset didn’t sit well with their fellow non Mormon citizenry. They voted in block in local elections. There was no separation of church and state. Outsiders were not treated well. (Side note: my grandfather wrote in his diary that in the early 1920’s he traveled through SLC looking for work. He said that since he was not a “saint” nobody would hire him). Smith also developed a reputation as a sexual predator. He had sexual misconduct charges brought against him in every single state he traversed. He started a militia to potentially fight AGAINST our government. Mormons eventually left the USA and moved to Mexican territory (now Utah) in 1847 partly to freely practice their polygamy which was not allowed in the US. Mormons in general have a distrust and contempt for our federal government going back to the early days. In fact, Joseph Smith sought out financial reparations from the federal government for being forced to leave the various states over persecution. That request was rejected (more contempt). Joseph Smith had enough arrogance to actually run for president of the united states at the time of his death. His intent (based on the Council of 50 minutes) was to eventually be king of the world. Remember not one of the 8 billion people on earth can get to the highest level in heaven without being a Mormon (more arrogance). Anyway, I liked your video. Very entertaining.

I'm an exmormon and I would say this is largely accurate from what I understand. You definitely get completely different focuses and stories from being in church vs. researching historical documents and accounts personally. Unfortunately there is a ton of cognitive bias, and for those like me who were born into it, I almost couldn't accept anything as truth that would shake my belief in the church's claims. Thankfully I was able to break through it eventually and now I am able to take major steps in recovering from major depression I've had my whole life and make my life my own! Best decision I could have made and my wife (who left with me) and I have never been, nor could we have been as Mormon, as we are now. It's pretty wild history, far too complicated for KZitem comments, but feel free to reach out if you have questions.

I really appreciated your perspective! I agree with what others said about why nonmembers may not like the Mormon church. Mormons can be very self righteous with a big superiority complex. Joseph stirred up a lot of trouble wherever he went, which I think added to perspective of outsiders on Mormons. Much of the true history has been quietly covered up or the narrative altered in the official church histories. For example, the church only more recently openly accepted any blame for the mountain meadow massacre, whereas back in 1936 there was a plaque in memory of the fallen, installed by fellow Arkansans in Arkansas where the group of pioneers originated. Additionally, members of the church are taught that Joseph was sent to Carthage jail unjustly, when in reality he was sent to jail because he helped to destroy a rival printing press that was planning to expose him and other members of the church that were participating in polygamy. All growing up, we were taught that the government was the bad guys working for satan because they kicked the early Mormons out of all the cities they tried to settle. That our pioneer ancestors suffered because those who oppressed were deceived by the devil. I think distrust in government may have also been perpetuated rom the oath of vengeance instigated by Brigham Young. It was part of the temple ceremony from 1845 to 1930 and said "You and each of you do covenant and promise that you will pray and never cease to pray to Almighty God to avenge the blood of the prophets upon this nation, and that you will teach the same to your children and to your children's children unto the third and fourth generation." Last point, this question comes up in a lot in videos from those who were not raised Mormon. Non-mormons (or nevermos) often are so confused how mormons can believe what they do. We are indoctrinated from infancy by way of songs and church lessons about the official narrative of the church, church doctrines, and the church's history. We are told that if we view any material that is not church approved we will be led away and deceived by satan. They use scare tactics to keep us from believing or even looking at anything not church approved. I think things are a little different now with the internet, but for me growing up before information was readily available, I had no idea. Nobody ever said anything to me about any possible discrepancies. I only ever heard that we were prosecuted by others because we were the true church. I wanted to be a faithful member so there was no way I would look at anything not originating from the church. So I had no idea about current events, real historical events, theological fallacies, anachronisms. I was taught not to think about it. To just trust in god that it would all work out and make sense after I die. Luckily, various life events happened and I finally allowed myself to look at sources not church approved and cited factual evidence was so overwhelming and eye opening. I'm mad and frankly embarrassed that I didn't even know the true history of the church I belonged to. Well, I left real quick after that.😂

Regarding "Mormon Face," it's definitely something other white people have noticed too. But it's more than just cultural vibe - Utah has the most plastic surgery clinics in the United States. More than Los Angeles, more than Miami. There is pressure to look the same, so Mormon-targeted plastic surgery advertisements and clinics are everywhere. Plastic surgery in and of itself is fine, but when there's the fear of God behind it? Not so great.

I’ve got a few thoughts on your last question. Just for context, I don’t live in a place with a lot of Mormons (I maybe know 2 in real life, and I’m not sure if they’re active or not) so most of what I know is via the internet. First, from the perspective of someone raised Lutheran, the Mormon church is difficult to accept as a "Christian" religion. They claim they are, but they don't meet the qualifications that Christians use to identify themselves. Namely, all non-debatably Christian denominations are Nicene Christians, but Mormons are not. For me, it's like looking in a cursed mirror. There are things you can recognize about yourself, but it's unnerving and potentially insulting for that reflection to be considered *you*. The church itself, as you point out, is also highly problematic and encourages cult-ish thinking (at least that’s how it looks from the outside) while making billions of dollars that are used debatably, which leaves a bad taste in a lot of people’s mouths. Not that some Christian organizations are any better, but it’s easier to see the problems with outsiders, you know? Secondly, you mentioned the persecution. A lot of the religious immigrants to the US were looking for two things: the freedom to practice their religion without oversight and the freedom *from* other people’s religion. That is, they didn’t necessarily tolerate beliefs that don’t match with their own. Especially if someone is trying to convert them to their beliefs. The best example I can give is how a lot of Protestants still don’t consider Catholics real Christians, even though they are literally the original Christian church. This has lead to a lot of hostility over the years. My understanding is this mindset was what forced the Mormons west: these people are weird, they’re heretics, and we aren’t going to tolerate them. Lastly, and this is largely due to where I live, but most of what people hear near me is whatever the internet chooses to push to them. A lot of times, that’s the less flattering stuff. Since there aren’t a lot of Mormons in my area, they can’t show us what they’re really all about, for better or for worse. I’m sure my bias is partly because I don’t know a lot of Mormons, good or bad, so a lot of what I know is the cult stuff which makes me uncomfortable. Hope this helps a little!

Say what you want but maybe there is some truth to the lds church, Joseph smith knew at a young age his name would be known for good and evil among all nations. The church collectively isn’t perfect because we are humans! but the doctrine found in it and inside the Book of Mormon is above and beyond any religion on earth, that’s not a biased opinion its a fact!
