They should have just called it Tengyun v3 and keep using the Tengyun name for their flagships. For a Zhanchi, maybe it would be cool to keep the same old shades but make a well turning cube.

Yes. Basically release a 57mm TengYun with old shades, call it a Zhanchi, everybody is happy.

Now that they released a decent zhanchi, is it considered their flagship? Because up until now I would've said their main flagship 3x3 was the tengyun, but now it seems like they have two flagships since they are so similar. On the other hand, it would seem strange to demote the tengyun to a lower tier after its success only because dayan felt like reviving an old cube. Also, the price difference is so small, it makes the choice between the two more confusing. I'm interested to see how dayan will differentiate the next versions of the tengyun/zhanchi.

The TengYun V1 is definitely in my top 3 cubes of all time. Absolutely unique feel and godly corner cutting. But I have to say I really like the 2018 Zhanchi - it's utterly useless without magnets and the caps were painfully sharp ootb, but with magnets and breaking in, it feels great, works well enough, and it's wonderful to have a cube that is 57mm and has old Zhanchi shades but also is a decent modern speedcube. It's the one cube I always take with me on holidays, because the shades are perfect for me in bad light conditions. Also, I bought it based on your review of it, and used a Cubicle gift card, so double thanks ❤️

Thanks for making this video phil! I was actually thinking about buying this cube but after watching this review, as well as countless other credible reviews, I've changed my mind. I dont want to waste money on a cube that has so many of the same features that many cubes today already have.

So the way I saw it was that they have three good brand names: the guhong, the tengyun, and the zanchi. Only two of those have the history that very few other cubes do. Think of it like gan and the new air. I main the tengyun V1 and I do see a market for the new zanchi. I my self have considered buying it(I’m gonna buy the gan carry instead). But Dayan is going down the gan path. They have an amazing mechanism, they change the name and features of the mechanism every year, release it with a nice box and bag, and botta boom botta bang, you have a successful brand.

This was something I was thinking about when it got released. I can't say much about the "sandwich" analogy. I don't have much experience prior to 2019 but I've heard bad things about the older Zhanchis like the 2017 etc. so you're good. In terms of naming something "Pro", GAN can be forgiven given that they make flagships with the intent of making cheaper stripped down versions in future, so naming something 11M Pro prepares for cheaper and simpler versions in future under the 11M name. I don't see DaYan making a Zhanchi Lite or any other cheaper Zhanchi, that's what their GuHong line is for. That's a big reason why the "Pro" naming made no sense. In terms of it being competitive, I agree with you there. At a glance it looks like a TengYun and I was hoping for DaYan to bring something new with this release rather than banking in on a magnet system that they've not changed for over a year. It's a good system, just not differentiated enough. I don't have enough knowledge on the history of DaYan products so can't say much with regards to a strategy point of view. But then again, it's a good recovery. It's something we saw with the revival of the GuHong line with the V3, which was somewhat disappointing following the success of the older GuHongs but from a performance perspective they brought it back with the V4. Another thing worth mentioning is the future clash of the Zhanchi and TengYun series from a price perspective. The Zhanchi is more expensive than the TengYuns but in the same price bracket, but even in that field they're not differentiating it. The price makes customers uncertain on whether this cube is going to be any different to the TengYun, never mind the appearance or performance on paper. Let's hope the Zhanchi M 2022 presents us with a good 10th anniversary cube. Great video

It's a basic case of slapping Marketing Names (Zanchi and Pro) on an old cube (TengYun - okay, so it's not that old). MoYu made a similar mistake by releasing the WRM 2020 and RS3M 2020 close to each other, but at least they were openly saying that they're basically the "same" cube.
