I wouldn’t say it’s “genius,” but it’s reflective of the times. Skinny has always been the beauty standard, and people are trying to be more honest about wanting to be super thin at any cost. It seems more realistic to admit it than claiming it was done with healthy diet/exercise. there’s many aspirational benefits, like social media fame or envy from others.

Namilia has a great artists’ statement on their website for both of the collections you’ve shown here that I think is pretty clear. It’s not an endorsement for thinness, and I don’t even think it’s satire. This collection is about the destructive and cyclical nature of fame, treatment of the y2k divas, how we love to watch others fail, and the worship of feminine identities within the rigid rules of gender in our culture. We push ourselves to our breaking points just to feel like we belong or deserve recognition. I feel like this collection isn’t exactly satire because it’s calling out current trends and how we’ve regressed back to the harmful ideas from the early 2000s
