+1 on the "less gain is more" approach. Also should noted that if the amp is well behind it's edge of breakup a clean boost can be used as a simplified volume pedal (for solos, etc.)

A well done, non-overly technical explanation of two different audio events. And bravo for addressing the "you don't need as much distortion as you think" issue. Some of my favorite "heavy" tones are from the 80's era Judas Priest albums. And of course, Malcom Young used tones just this side of country clean and got a huge tone in the context of AC/DC. @KenCarver

@@AdamManley7 I said "this side of country clean"...which with today's country isn't exactly pristine. I was implying that there was some grit to the tone, in contrast to a raging JCM900. The best example I can give you is Malcom's tone on the "Black Ice" album, especially the track "Rock-N-Roll Train". You can hear the pick attack and each note in the chords. That was what I was trying to get at.

Great demo! I just rearranged my board to try these options. I'd truly never thought of using them together in that way, using the Overdrive clipping, to push the amp clipping, and then the boost to push both for yet another level of distortion. It's so simple, it's genius! Your explanations on the use of each effect, how to use them combined, AND then reverse? I couldn't help but think, all this combined with working the guitars volume for dynamic range , more subtle change and your easily dialing in 6 distinct levels of saturation! This opened my eyes to a whole new way of looking at the interplay between amp, pedal, and a front end push on the gain stages & clipping, throughout the chain. Dude... Bro... You killed it! Bravo, good sir.👏🏼 Bravo.👏🏼

This is a concept that this old metal head (turning blues player) had never even considered until seeing this video. I've always been the hard core distortion pedal kind of guy, but now I'm over 60 yrs old, I'm looking to more refined tones. This video has truly opened my eyes to something that I have never before even considered. (or,... for that matter, even realized existed !) This video has given me a whole new angle to look at, using pedals I have never really even considered. Thank you very much for this eye opening video ! It will have a HUGE impact in my future tone ! the « less drive is more » thing is absolutely true, but sometimes, pushing an amp that is already at full gain and full volume a bit further (a lot) will make you discover territories of tones that you would have never heard before. A boost at full volume in front of a tweed deluxe which is already at full volume will make it sound like it’s falling apart in the best way possible (think « Hey Hey My My (Into the Black) » by Neil Young, absolutely killer tone) :)

As shown in this example the boost does sound better than an overdrive. But what's best is relative to what amp, pedals, pickups you have and how much gain you are aiming for. Some amps really start to get a flubby low end when being pushed at max gain. In this case an overdrive might work to tighten up the low end or a boost with some extra controls. When going into a really clean amp a boost might just increase the volume without adding much breakup, in this case an od will probably work better.

With things like the Helix, there is another way where overdrives can play a more pronounced role. This is where the amp gain is set clean and almost never changed -- wet effects go before the amps, cabs/IRs with compressor/boost/OD before the wet effects.. In this case overdrives are just about the only source of crunch, though I suppose if you hit the amp hard enough it will produce some crunch without touching the gain parameter.

Saturation has never been a problem if the amp is loud enough and has a decent circuit. Anything from A Vox AC series, a Marshall plexi or fender tweed circuit Like a bassman or a high powered twin, that’s all the break up I need. With a good boost a little reverb/ tape delay And possibly some eq, that’s where I get my sweet singing sustain. For good lead guitar playing sustain is mandatory and I prefer a creamy Rich sound to a saturated biting sound. For dirty rhythm track AC/DC is about as hard as I wanna get as far as clipping is concerned. The only guy I know who played with high gain and really made it work was Van Halen the early days. That would not be considered super high gain by modern standards but Anything beyond the first few Van Halen records for distortion to me sounds like garbage. Just an opinion which is why I will not play anything more distorted than Black Sabbath which to me is heavier than any modern metal band because the heaviness is in the dynamics and not in how Scooped and saturated your tone is. Normally that just sounds fucking irritating and gives you a headache.

That's the Scott Henderson RC Booster, isn't it? I have that as the first of my dirt pedals, nearly always on as a boost. Next in my chain is a Diamondhead distortion + boost, used as needed, then a Timmy overdrive, anf finally an OCD overdrive, set up as a clean boost. I use either OD or distortion, but never both.
