Hello Public Piper, ..your Clay pipe looks really nice! In Bremen, we have a tradition, we call the "Schaffermahl" (means something like "Sailors meal"). Since 1545 the city council invites the Captains at the end of the season to a traditional meal...and in the end of this meeting clay pipes are smoked - until today! Even chancelor Merkel had to do this when she was invited as a guest in 2007.... Thanks for sharing this with us - and take care my friend!

Bremen Pipe Smoker That makes total sense. When I brought this pipe back to Indiana to visit with family I passed it around and it became a sort of Indian "peace pipe". There's definitely something communal about it. It really is something to be shared with others. Thanks for that interesting German story.

Very happy to see someone extol the virtues of clay pipes! It seems like a lot of pipers in the community only do what everyone else does, limiting their experiences to only "accepted" brand name pipes and gourmet tinned tobaccos. Seventy years ago, such was not the case. From what I was told about the war years, (WWII), money was tight, things were rationed or unavailable, "drug store" pipes were just fine and burley blends were the norm. You've got yourself a new subscriber. I like the scope of your content.

Pipes are so different than cigars but we're all part of the same big family :)

Thanks for posting this! I was reluctant to try a clay pipe as I'm used to briar pipes. However, I took the leap and purchased one, and I am amazed at how well it smokes. It really controls moisture well. I tried a light aromatic sample I'd received from 4 noggins in it first, and I could tell that if I had smoked it in a briar pipe I wouldn't have liked it because of moisture, but the clay pipe managed that so well that it became a much better smoke. Next I put a really good pipe tobacco in it, McClelland's Balkan Blue, and shared it with some friends around a campfire. My brother, who inhales, said it tasted really good. His friend who doesn't smoke said it was delicious. The pipe lifted an already great blend even higher. I'm thinking I'd like to enjoy my new clay pipe beside many more campfires.

My first pipe was a 17th C English Civil War era to take on reenactments, would say it smoked a lot better than my briar, fit in a smaller quantity of tobacco but still great and gives you a very oldie worldy experience. Bought it from Dawnmist Studios I would definitely recommend her, shes open to answering questions and makes great pipes. Bought a Victorian snub pipe too with a lovely ship design on it, but it didn't survive a night out in Dublin!

Clay pipes are found by the hundreds in the Thanes river where it runs through London. The earliest pipes date from the late 1500's and the bowls were small because tobacco was very expensive. They can still be purchased there. Supposedly Sir Walter Raleigh was the guy who introduced pipe smoking to England. He saw the native Americans puffing their pipes and found that tobacco use was widespread amongst them and tobacco was venerated. Native Americans traded tobacco all the way up to Canada. The onset of commercial nicotine enhanced cigarettes has ruined tobacco's reputation. Pipe smoking isn't risk free but it is orders of magnitude safer than puffing cigarettes all day long

I just had a duídín shipped from Ireland to me. I'm just now getting in to pipes; my da used to smoke them when I was younger and nostalgia beat the crap out of me recently, so I ordered a pouch of Captain Black cherry(what he used to smoke) and the pipe. I was going to get something wooden, but being both ignorant of pipes and O'Irish, when I stumbled upon the duídín I thought it was something unique and cool so I went with it. I kinda laughed when you said your $20 pipe was considered "high end" pricewise, because I dished out like $40 for mine and now I feel silly.

Since i smoked my first clay pipe, I also couldnt put it down! And I'd always prefer a 2 bucks Clay pipe of a 500 bucks hand-made briar pipe. This is HOW GOOD clay pipes are! ;-) The taste is superior, no ghosting at all you can load a straight VA right after you smoked a Latakia or Kentucky blend. Also try to compare a blend smoked in briar and clay - the clay will always deliver a much more versatile taste with much more nuances that you'd get with a briar - ALWAYS! Really enjoyed the video, thanks for that.

oh and by the way: 25 dollars is pretty much for a clay pipe! They usually cost around 1,50 (€) to maximum of 5 (€) for a simple, white clay pipe - hand made! For 10-30 bucks you get a nice clay with "decoration" on it (excuse my lack of the right term, I hope you guys get what I mean). But very nice clay pipe!

I've gotten back into pipe smoking after a 15-year hiatus, and I decided to look at clay pipes to add to my briars and meerschaums. After seeing your video, I began looking around and ended up ordering a Dutch Gouda from Penn Valley. I also acquired a couple of 18th century period pieces (originals, not reproductions) from Dawnmist in the UK. I've noticed that my Dutch Gouda does the same "tar beading" that your pipe does. Some tobaccos produce more, some less. My pipes from Dawnmist do not produce that beading at all. My Penn Valley is of slip cast manufacture and is thinner overall, and I wonder if this has something to do with it. Any more experiences with that phenomenon? In any case, I love my clays and I think it's safe to say that I'm a clay pipe convert.

Interestingly, the clay pipe used by Sherlock Holmes is described in one story as "oily" and in others as being "black." I know pipes can be made from black clay, but I wonder if this black beading we've both experienced wasn't all that uncommon in days gone by.

It doesn't leak fast enough to drip. It dries and hardens. You can cook/burn the pipe to make it bleach white again.

they are. and i like how most of them are very historically accurate. she told me that by far most of her customers are historical re-enactors. the draft hole on the ones ive gotten form her are a bit tight, but i still love the experience. i think the longer the pipe the harder it is to have a decent size draft hole. the shorter ones tend to be a little bit wider. tomorrow ill be attending the Seattle Pipe Club. (they meet just 30 minutes from my place) I went last month and it was great. I'm thinking tomorrow ill try to see if i can set up an interview of sorts form Joe Lankford, the blender behind the SPC blends (he lives in my home town). since you have some experience with this sort of thing, what do you think I should ask him? well, i guess thats it for now. take care and keep smoking that clay. the coloration youre getting is incredible.
