My wife and I have been watching this channel for a long time, never commented until now. As much as we love to watch Taylor's hiking videos, the last few we watched were downright dangerous especially considering she's hiking alone. With the current weather conditions the trail is just too dangerous to hike right now, we are VERY GLAD Taylor is playing it smart and leaving the trail. We will miss her daily hiking in the short term but are looking forward to when she returns, whenever it's SAFE to get back on trail. Thank you Taylor for taking us with you on your hike these past few months, very glad you are home safe and sound.

I was so impressed with how you maintained your common sense and didn't make foolish decisions. Especially when creeks/rivers were flooding. You are so strong, and set a great example for the importance of "hike your own hike", by identifying risks, and making wise decisions! Flash flooding is for real. PLUS your actions, especially how you safely tested the creek, kept you alive, and also didn't put rescuers at risk!! HOPE YOU ALWAYS FEEL PROUD OF HOW YOU MANAGED!!! You're a Rock star!!

My husband (84) and I (80) have been watching your vlogs since 2020, so we’re big fans of your channel. We both think you’ve made the right decision to take a break from your through hike given the circumstances. Hiking alone must be challenging for many reasons, but safety certainly has taken the front seat since you entered New Hampshire, with steep, rough, slippery terrain, mud, high water and now failing gear. I’m sure your husband and family (and Callie) are glad to have you home and safe! We look forward to seeing you finish your through hike in the bright, sunny, cool, bugless (and hopefully dry!) days of September. You made the right decision, the trail will still be there in the fall! 🥰👍

Thru hiked way back in ‘92 - it was an amazing, beautiful and very, very difficult journey. And very different from what most experience now. I’m sure I’m gonna take a ton of flack here for this observation- but simply put, Thru-Hikes now have morphed from being about the solitude and wilderness experiences with limited outside interaction. That made it such a huge mental challenge and was the biggest obstacle on the trail, the isolation. Now it’s becoming a big social thing and at times a continuous party like atmosphere. There was No consistent connectivity with the outside world, home, plans how to deal with what lay ahead, (the dreaded uncertainty & unknown) which immersed you into the woods and was the catalyst for a real mental transformation that is, in my humble opinion, what creates the backcountry experience. The isolation eventually allows you to discover completely, who you are and what you are made of. I believe that all the new technology and connectivity diminishes the possibility of a remote and detached wilderness trail experience- not just for you, but also for those hiking around you. The experience is now of “bubbles” or large groups of hikers, blue-light lit shelters that now has increased the numbers from a 3000 or so attempts annually with a less than 10% success rate to now well over 5000 -6000 annually and an over 25% success rate. Translates to a lot more people on the trail. The beloved trail is becoming too much like everywhere else and it shows in the numbers. Sure, Hike Your Own Hike still stands true, but , I don’t think it’s in the best interest of the Trail itself long term and commercializing it on social media only speeds the decay. Sure, more interest could translate to more protection of the view-shed & corridor, but, in the end, for what purpose if it becomes trampled and over populated and over managed ? Whew! - there I said it. Now I expect the onslaught of disagreement. Yogi Master - GA > ME ‘92

Ideas for videos as we go through Taylor Withdrawal: 1) You sitting in your tent (pitched in backyard or anywhere) in buff and braids, or not, as you tell us about your day. 2) You making ramen with your camp stove, or cooking dinner in your kitchen, while you tell us about your day. 3) Slack packing as you hike from your car to your gift shop, and then give us a tour!❤ Wishing you the best!

Taylor, I have been watching your hike, I am on day 41, but saw the "got off trail" heading and had to jump ahead. You absolutely made the correct decision; I hope if I am in the same situation next year on my thru hike that I am able to come to the same conclusion. When I hike my wife always makes me promise to not do something stupid, continuing on with flooding and Garmin SOS issues would absolutely qualify as something stupid. Taylor, I have watched your hike daily. It has been amazing all you faced up to. That water is very scary. My husband and I hiked backcountry in the Smokey’s a couple of years ago. I started the hike in shorts and warm weather. The first night on trail the rain began. We hiked 2 more days in the pouring rain and crossed rushing streams almost to my hips. The weather continually got colder. We spent our third, last night, in freezing weather. The morning brought snow. Our shoes, socks and some of our clothes were wet/ frozen. My poor husband’s pants were soaked. I had an extra pair of leggings so guess what that’s what he wore out. We still laugh about the leggings. As I watched you at that river I was so glad you did not cross it. Sorry for the long post. I look forward to seeing you finish up. I remember you said you were going to try to make it to Trail Days as a vendor next year. Maybe I will get to meet you there.

I’m so happy you’ve decided to wait to finish your trail in the fall. With the amount of flooding, especially within the last week has been horrific with extreme flooding in VT, NH, and ME. Thinking about your sat device, have you thought about attaching it like a PASS device on your upper body but have it underneath your rain gear to keep it from getting drenched and malfunctioning? As for flash flooding, many people don’t realize that it can happen so fast.... example... the Mad River can go from mainly boulders/rocks to raging white water rapids within an hour depending on the weather with a flood stage up to 13 feet. I’ve seen all things pass by, once a cabin, and then many trees rolling by my place. So many should keep in mind that warnings are in place for a reason, and to always be cautious and aware. Lastly, I’d like to check out your shop with my mom someday. Thank you for incredible and amazing videos, you are such an inspiration!!!! 👍 (edited to try and correct autocorrect, but.. it has a mind on its own 🤦♀️ 🤷♀️😆)

Mr. Rook and I got off the trail in Manchester VT. We too got off the trail for similar reason. After slogging through mud, hours of down pours, both falling on the boards across the wet spaces, and the stream crossing at flood stage. We too don't know how a NOBO couple crossed that stream with their dog and gear (we saw them in town). Our son was meeting us to hike in VT. We ended up going to CT to hike. Safety should be the number one priority in the AT. We too plan to resume our flip flop in the fall. However, this thru hike will be extended several years. It was great to meet you in NJ. You seem to know just the right amount of every aspect of the through hike to show - scenery, camp chores, hostels, the mental aspect of the hike... awesome. It is obvious that you are competitive with yourself and finishing in a shorter period of time than your last hike was something you really wanted to do so it must have been really dangerous for you to put it on hold. Kudos to you for making this decision. I can't imagine how frustrating and scary it must have been to have been in that situation on that last day. What an inspiration you are!! As a father and grandfather of young ladies, your adventure scares me to death!! I find myself getting super emotional during parts of your narrative as I think of them doing something similar. Please stay safe out there. You have my support 100%!!!!

I've been following you since day one of the AT this year, and it's so good to hear your updates. I appreciate that you are both bold and cautious. Enjoy your summer, and I'll watch your next videos regardless of when they come out.

Thanks for the videos, loved following along everyday, and glad you are home safely. I think a video where you talk about off trail highlights or must see places would be great! Any trail towns, hotels or hostels, restaurants or events that you think are worth getting off trail to see along the way. I hope to do a “tourist hike” someday!

Taylor, it has been a joy following along with you on your hike.. I have learned so much about the trail and helps to prepare for my own hike someday. Dont feel bad about ending your hike when you did. Safety should always been your main concern. Thanks for answering the question on the age of hikers. Its on my bucket list to hike the AT in my retirement in a couple of years. Best of luck to you in what ever you do. I will be sure to check back and follow along when you finish the AT and catch up on your other videos as well.

Hey Taylor , i havnt watched as much of your vlogs as i normaly do , life ya know. But i am very Happy you made the decision to get off trail when you did. Seems things were lining up for you to get hurt. As for continuing your hike in sept , many states are starting their hunting seasons, i urge you to either try to change your pack to mabet the same pack , but a much brighter color or pick up a mesh hunting vest and secure it around your pack and also wear a bright shirt.

You definitely made the right call, Taylor. Safety is paramount, especially as a solo hiker. ... Would love to see a video of you doing some trail magic in your area for some of the NoBos and SoBos passing through. Would be fun.

I was so glad to see that you did not attempt to cross that river. I like that you are strong enough to know when to say enough is enough on the trail. I have rooted for you the entire way and that includes your decision to stop at this time. Congratulations on a hike well done! Colorado Girl

You definitely made the right decision and, as always, set a good example for all of us. I think it would be informative if you would share your thoughts on your equipment - what's working well and what you plan to replace, add, or delete before resuming your hike in September. Thanks for all you put into these vlogs - 50,000 of us appreciate it!!!

Taylor, I have so much fun watching you and other people make the hike that I can't do anymore. I know that your hike will be safer and more pleasant in September. Please don't feel upset about taking a break. I personally think you made the safe and wise decision. Its so much better to know you are safe, than to sit here worrying about you. By the time you are ready to hit the trail again, you will have the tech you need and all will be well! Be happy! Go swimming! Have picnics! Enjoy summer at home till you are ready to go again with good gear in good shape!

My wife and I have been following your hike since day 1 and have really enjoyed your perspective on the AT. We have nothing like it here in the UK (our longest trail is 630 miles) so have been finding it fascinating. You were making good decisions throughout and the one to come off trail for now is absolutely correct given the weather conditions We look forward to watching you complete the trip in September.

It takes courage and wisdom to make that kind of decision. How you maturely handle adversity is one of the many reasons you have so, so many encouraging subs! I'm so thankful you're determined to complete Maine. It's my home, and I fiercely love every rock and root on our trails--- even if I complain once in a while! September is my favorite time to be in the Maine woods! ❤ I'm really looking forward to traveling with you via YT.
