You're on a splendid journey. I know exactly where you're coming from too. Making musical instruments from junk is awesome. I love the Blues, and I wanted to play it on something that's very personal to me and my lifestyle. Just over a year ago, I bought a 3-string Cigar Box Guitar with a hand wound 3-pole single coil pickup. That was it, I had to start making these things. Every instrument is different and made from a variety of materials gleaned from different sources. I do insist on decent hard woods for the necks and nicely resonating cigar boxes. It's amazing what can be found on the streets of Amsterdam on garbage pickup day. There's always hardwood lying around, ready for the taking. The cigar boxes are easy to find. I go begging at the myriad of cigar shops and emporiums here in Amsterdam. They''re glad to get rid of them. Luckily, I'm a dab hand with a soldering iron. So custom making pickup electronics, is easy. It's really fun to do on these primitive instruments. I find most of the components on discarded circuit boards. The only things I buy are the pups and decent pots My two favourite CBGs are both 3-stringers and fretless. They both have maple necks with American white oak heels. I found some really nice zebrano, (zebrawood). I used that to make their fretboards/fingerboards. One is fitted with an old style low/medium output single coil lipstick pickup in the neck position. The other is fitted with a medium hot mini-humbucker, also in the neck position. Two very different sounds and tones from two guitars of very similar construction. They both not only look beautiful, they sound great too. You've inspired me to pull out a 2-string fretless baritone "chugger" I made. It's constructed with a combined American white oak neck and heel. It's fitted with a 3-pole single coil mag pup. It's really gutsy and primal sounding. I find it great for playing percussive style rhythms. I'm in the process of making another 3-stringer. This has a European oak neck and heel. It's going to have a Warman Firebucker mini-humbucker in the neck position, with a coil split and in parallel options: www.warmanguitars.co.uk/product/poleless-firebucker-mini-humbuckers-pair/. In addition, I'm making a piezo bridge pickup from a piece of real ebony I was given. The pickups will be independent of each other. I can't be bothered trying to match the impedance. There'll be simple switch between the two pickup types. I'm really looking forward to hearing what this build will sound like. Making music from junk and scraps, is rewarding in so many ways.

I love what you did with your aluminum double bass! You and I have very similar backgrounds. I taught myself electric bass when I was 13 in 1965 and finally learned to play Upright 25 years ago. it was a huge leap for me as a bass player and opened so many more opportunities for me, as well as making me a better all-around bass player. It takes a real bass player to come up with new and great ideas for instruments and bass amps. Keep up the good work Tim. I would like to collaborate making an electric and double bass for me in the near future. Cheers from a Texan in Buenos Aires Argentina!

Started playing bass about two months ago after guitar for forty odd years. Been sculpting in stone and mixed media since 86 and love using found objects in my work, so was drawn to those pieces for that very reason. If I can find some old water skis will have a go at your ski bass, if that's ok with you. I won't if it's not. Anyway it's when other artist come up with these out of the box creations that keeps me inspired. Thanks and have a great day.

It's often from other artists who are working from everyday life that I get inspired. Would love to make myself a ski bass if it's ok that I use your idea. If not, I won't. I ended up here by accident, but I'm glad I did. Cool video, cool guitars & basses, cool attitude! I love that aluminum upright. When I was in high school, a couple of us assembled a handful of upright basses from a pile of broken wood; the action was about an inch high (on the "good" one), but playing 'The Trooper' on them every morning really built up our fretting-hand strength! Anyway, good for you- I'll definitely be checking out your other videos...

5:49-5:53 EXACTLY! Which implies... that it doesn't matter what the body of an electric guitar is made of as long as you don't use it acoustically or as long as you don't amplify it by using pickups that are microphonic and able to process the acoustic sound of the wood. I love what you do for the planet, although I love guitars that were made of highly exclusive timbers, just for the sheer beauty of it. But there is a LOT of good old used timber available that can be reused for all sort of things, that you normally would have to cut several trees in the tropical rain-forest for. For instance: they closed down a Catholic church from the 1960s FULL of mahogany church benches (metal frames with SOLID ONE PIECE [maybe over 4 meters long EACH] mahogany seats and back supports. That is a gold mine for any luthier and for the planet! All they have to do is UNSCREW these planks from the metal frames and they can start processing them to bodies... necks... you name it!

With knick knack shelves with or without doors, up an down or sideways would look cool. +tim sway that's what I like, they all have their own look and voice ,I hate the "tonewood" debate ,if people are listening to that they're missing out on hearing the music ! IMO .I'm going to glue it instead of bolting it ,I was going to go fretless but I'd probably never be able to play it lol

put cheater lines. slot it for frets but fill with brass and make it flush/ put your finger on the brass and you'll be close enough ;-) i asked because your last instagram pic gave me an idea. looking forward to seeing the finished product.

You should have workshops where they bring reclaimed materials and you help them bring it to life

I've done brainstorming sessions at my local library where I dump out a garbage can full of things I've collected and we dream up what it can all become

thank you!! I prefer to think of it as "hard work" and "practice." "talent" sounds too easy. :)

fun stuff, you might try using a trashcan to make a resonator body, a friend was going to but decided he would rather spend his freetime playing since he repairs and builds for a living. would be curious how that might work, though don't heat galvanized metal, extremely toxic fumes.

i think I'd opt for the trash can double bass, being a bassist primarily. I really like the idea and may do it!

too kind. as a musician yourself you are full well aware that "talent" is a very small part of the equation, it's all practice and hard work :)

That's a musician joke, kind of like what do you call a drummer with half a brain? talented. I also play drums.

steveshlacker calm down man! I make jokes like these with my drummer friend all the time! Things like: “What did the drummer say to pick up the girl after the gig?” “I’m the guitarist.” These jokes don’t mean anything, and a drummer is absolutely essential to a band.
