Thank you for the video. I've owned a Valentine One V1G1 and now a V1G2 for roughly 20 years. The arrows makes 'finding' the source so much easier. Driving on I90 in Ohio. Which is always enforced heavily. Had a on coming Ka signal. Officer passed on west bound lanes. Flipped signal from front / side to rear. Faded out as they drove off to the west. Suddenly got a weak Ka alert from the rear. It slowly gain in strength. SO I slowed down and later was passed by east bound OSP cruiser. I will not drive without a 'arrow' detector. Take care - Be safe Vortex. Hope the family and you are doing well. Spin

I find my Radenso DS1 is sensitive enough that I just slow down for a few minutes every time that I get a KA detection, which is about all I see in California. Even if I already passed the cop, if its still alerting, I treat it like an active threat. I can see how the arrows would be useful however.

Glad you did a video on this as you mentioned this briefly in the live chat last week. I really do like the arrows on my MAX 360 and MAX 360c. I need to get my R8 out of the box and run it (been using my R4 now). The only benefit I can see of a high quality detector without arrows is cost. That's why I like my R4. Less money but high quality and less $$$ than an R8.
@cpg8000

Radar is fairly infrequent, meaning, the amount of time you encounter radar vs the amount of time you don’t (independent of where you live), means that if you’re RD is going off you’re going to slow down. Knowing direction is cool, but the additional data doesn’t really substantially help you determine what your behavior should be behind the wheel. Arrows are neat, but the aggregate sum-total isn’t significantly added to at the end of the day. I really doubt an RD with arrows vs one without would mean the difference between a ticket or not for the same driver, under usual circumstances.

Agree with everything that was said. And yes, there are many detectors out there that have multiple threat warning (can alert and tracking multiple bogeys) with only one antenna but in practice I've never found them to work all that well. Often times they don't make a audible alert, they simply just show two or three signals. Escort has this problem, and even Uniden makes a very muted multiple bogey alert

Thanks for addressing this subject, Vortex, I know the arrows vs. no arrows debate has users on both sides, and you made some very rational arguments for having arrows. I've found myself in some of those same situations in the past, so I couldn't agree with you more. I ran a DFR7 and an R3 for some time and found myself constantly looking around for the source when they would alert, so much so that I'm surprised I didn't get whiplash. Not a comforting experience. I eventually upgraded to an R7 and all of that discomfort and anxiety is gone thanks to knowing from which direction I'm being targeted. Planning to upgrade to an R8 when they're available.

I've been sold on 'arrows' for a long time - I've used Valentine1 since they first came out LONNNG ago. What really convinced me was driving down an interstate in a rather deserted area, I picked up a radar cop coming towards me in the distance. He went by and the arrow pointed to the rear. After a short bit the signal quieted... but then I got another weak signal - from the back - and watched the strength ramp up. It was that first cop, he had made a U-turn and was racing up behind me. I knew exactly what was going on and made sure my speed was legal. And sure enough, here he came up behind me. Also, driving at night with a radar cop 2 or 3 cars behind you, you know he's there even though there's no way to actually see him.

You talked about driving at Night.... I did this on a pitch-black moonless night. not only did arrows help ID where the cop was hiding the tone and signal strength let me figure out what he was doing. He was driving away from me... with his front radar on.... so I was getting backscatter off cars coming the other way. I could guess the distance from him to me by the time between when the radar peeked and when a car coming towards me passed. The v1 mixes the incoming radar source with the beep tone... I got a rapid peeking beep and then a very strong signal from that I could tell that someone had sped past him and that he was turning around and coming back my way.. I could tell this without being able to see his car. zoom the car passes me.. and 3 seconds later the chp car that I was tracking speed by in pursuit.

How is 5 Minute Fridays 9 minutes 46 seconds?? Arrows have benefits for sure, BUT any GOOD RD is better than no RD. Even if that good RD doesnt have arrows. An experienced user with no arrows can often tell where its coming from by signal strength and also reflections off of trucks and signs. Best arrows: V1 G2; 2nd: Redline 360C 3rd R7
Just got an R7 on the Best Buy deal. Have been on a couple of drives and I’ve found even after setting the rear sensitivity to 30%, an officer running rear antenna traveling away from me in a “moonshot” type situation can alert too strong for far too long. I went past one running two antennas on a straight slight incline with no obstacles, and the R7 stayed at full strength while according to the All Threat, a different Ka signal I knew would be a much greater threat, was up ahead. In those situations, I wish there was a way to reprioritize signals based on known situational information.
