I feel like buying myself a smallholding at the age of 25 is much earlier than most. I saw the reality of what society expected of me and stepped aside before ever boarding that ship. The thought of rents and high mortgages while working to fulfil someone else's dream and having no time for myself sounded like an eternal nightmare. I really loved this long interview format. A lot of similarities in my life and I would like to share words of encouragement on one point Bruce raised on loss of pension and hoping his kids will take care of him. I am in a similar position where I walked away from a Pension, and now face the "dire" thought of not having that savings going into my later years. Your land is your pension. If you take care of it, build the fertility, grow a food forest, and be a good shepherd, every year there is a return on your investment. A happy apple tree wants nothing more than to be productive for you, and give you healthy food every year. A pension will give you money so that you can hopefully go and buy healthy food, but will it be enough? A pension takes care of your physical health, but what is the value of being active, working with your hands, breathing fresh air and growing healthy food. You "retire" and then what, collect your pension and drink martinis on the beach? That will wear off quickly ... when you love your land, you don't want to retire, every day is a day to wake up and be productive as you see the efforts of your work every day - to yourself, your family, your community, and to the rest of the world. No pension can pay me enough to feel those things.

Hello, MB, and good evening. I do not disagree with your wonderful and insightful comment, but as an ex-pat American, perhaps I have it ingrained into me too far that I need a bit of cash to get the things my land cannot provide: I need gas/petrol to put in my car to go to town to buy toilet paper. I need money for car insurance. I need money for health care. I need money for shampoo. I need money for dog food. I need money for the electric company. As much as I applaud this young man and his family for having a go at a 'pioneer' way of life, what would happen if he got seriously injured on that tractor of his? How would his family get on? Even if I wanted to can my produce/vegetables, I still need to jars and lids and they aren't free. And not everyone can make a living on KZitem. As a professional working in healthcare, I need to be in a place where I can actually do my job so I would need to have a car and get to a hospital. And, in this uncertain time of climate change, can any of us really depend on Mother Nature to be consistent enough to see us through? I'll take you up on the drinks on the beach, though...with a glass of wine as I am not a martini fan...have a great evening!!

Bruces history is the dillema of many folk caught in the insular rat race rut, he said he was lucky, I suggest we make our own luck, as my dear old dad said, "They say some people get all the luck but actually in my experience it appears everyone get the breaks but are they ready to recognize them when they come?!" Being prepared is a state of mind more than anything else, and I'm sure Bruce would agree. His wife saved him as did mine! Irish blood is generally far more self sufficent in the fairer of the species. There is argueably great Spiritual value in being a wage slave forfilling responsibilities and being a provider however it can also be a stepping stone to autonomy as we mature. Well done Bruce en famillé, Co Clare around Ennis Diamon was also my first introduction to the emerald isle. God Bless the work. 💖🙏🌻

Doesn't matter what age you are, or on what side of any particular number you are. We all have limited time on Earth and if you know that even a shot time in the right place will make you happy, why not try for it. If it doesn't work out, you gave it a go and as one door closes, others will always open up. This is how our lives are meant to be, the only impediment to our rich life experience is our hesitation to try. Know that once you make major changes, whatever happens, it is what you were meant to do all along. Good luck.

I'm so deep in the ratrace right now and I'm really not winning the struggle. Myself and my partner hate eachother, we have two boys 1 and 3, the eldest is on the spectrum and the youngest may be too. I myself am on the spectrum and have adhd. I was kicked out of school at 16 and went to work as a carpenter for many years. When 2008 hit I self-taught myself 3d art and then programming, and I'm now a game developer considered an expert in my field. It is a high stress very demanding career, it pays well but we live in Dublin and rent is just unmanageable. Our eldest is in a specialised school for kids with autism here and neither me nor my partner drive, so we're anchored to Dublin. No life savings, dead broke right now actually, and no friends or family who could help us out, family need the help more than we do really. I've started drinking again recently, it's all that gets me through the day. As it stands the path forward for me is to wither and die. I keep looking for a path out but I'm yet to find one. I don't know why I'm saying this here, it goes unsaid otherwise I guess

Seeing that bathtub reminded me of my setup in Scotland in 1997. I bought an old stone built fishermans house that had no bathroom or hot water system. There was an unfinished net mending loft area that could be used to convert to a bathroom but that needed architect plans and a building warrant. That took a few weeks but I could get on with putting in a water heating setup. Once that job was done I bought the bathtub and had that in use in the kitchen until the bathroom loft conversion was in place!

Nice to see Bruce over here, following him and his family too 😊 I can relate to so much of what he said and that makes a nice change. What he said about his relationship is so similar to me and Jonny, just being checked out and the journey we've gone on to reconnect. I think we realised that you can't rely on the government to change things for the better and so that's part of the reason we're hoping to get our bit of land in Ireland. I always say to people that we're either being brave or stupid 😅 Such a great insight into not having the energy for community until you get off the treadmill, I had never thought of that but I think it's true. Great interview, really enjoyed it 👍 Kate p.s. you can be composted, I think it's in the early stages, but it can be done!

Really enjoying these interviews and this one is exceptional. I could relate to Bruce saying, he felt at home in Ireland. I'm three generations from my roots in Ireland. So far, I've found family in Donegal, Cork, and Galway. When I visited Ireland in 2001, it felt so much like home and when I left, I cried, I did not want to leave. I've not been able to return, but I so long to do so.

Off Grid Bruce...I have been a subscriber for a while. Looking forward to following your journey. Thanks Daniel for this video. The use of "brave" is spot on. Any first step into the unknown takes bravery.

It’s so funny, I was about to tease you in a comment about the number of times you called this property “unusual,” but then you said it yourself. Truly unusual. Truly lovely. Full of potential but already stunning. Love the kitchen & would happily cook at that stove, pressure canning, water bathing food stores. Would love a little farm store there. This one is a definite gem 💎. Good find, Daniel! Be well my friend!!🍎🍏🐝🌳🌲l

Great interview with Bruce. Really well presented and flowed really well. Honest and open. Quite a journey he's had and not just physically, he's turned a corner in his life with his family and now he looks like he's found home.

Don't forget to subscribe to Bruces channel folks !! 😉 Welcome to the west of Ireland , Bruce & family ... from a Dublin "Jackeen" , now 16 years living in Mayo... I'd never go back to city life... 🤗 Edit... listening to you, finding it hard to admit you have courage, to me, courage comes from a willingness to do the uncomfortable, painful even...to step outside your comfort-zone (even when you recognise you are not actually "comfortable") I was reminded of something I heard a psychologist say... "Change only happens... when the pain of change..is less than the pain of standing still..." Your humility & lack of ego are two great personality traits necessary to be true to yourself... & that is the ultimate goal of life , I feel... 😎👍☘🍺

Another amazing interview! Bruce had some great insights. And loved hearing your pov along side his. Very natural and wonderful. I think what every person watching resonated with is just needing a break to figure out what it is you want to do. Wither living where you do, moving to the countryside, starting your own thing, you just need that break. The bit about not attaching yourself to the idea of forever, amazing. Looking forward to the interview with Annie!

Very nice insights! Appreciate these videos. Since I'm aiming for this kind of life and I fall into the category of people that wish that was me and haven't yet taken the leap. But me and my girlfriend has bought a cottage with some land that we use as a summer home so we are builing it up little by little for a different future. Keep up the good work!
