Good advice on having a clear reason to upgrade and not upgrading when there isn't a clear reason. I was in the market for a mixer with more inputs than my 633 so the 888 made sense. I think it was largely a matter of timing for me. It probably would have been the 688 if the 888 hadn't been introduced when it was. I've only been able to use the 888 on a few jobs so far because of the pandemic, but no regrets so far. The 888's Dante may come in handy in the near future with a corporate streaming production where we'll need to do some distancing throughout a corporate office.

Excellent point about streaming and use of Dante Curtis, what's really exciting is we're starting to see NDI/Dante bridges but they are limited at this point to three stereo pairs and require a PC. I wonder if SD can make their recorders talk directly to a NDI system as an option rather then just Dante. I have the feeling that the popularity of this will grow very quickly in the coming years.

Nice info and liked your Scorpio vs. 688 preamp comparo video, too. Briefly, I’m an “experienced “ IATSE and Indie Bag mixer. My work is two wireless and a boom to a Zax DEVA Fusion 12 full-out with all wireless, 4 separate IFB feeds, etc... I always wait for the new gear to mature. I always have a backup kit standing by. 3 years ago, I was in a canoe going across a 50 foot wide pond, returning from recording 3 guys duck hunting all morning for 4 hours. I was mirroring the MARF files to .wav poly’s while waiting to push off from shore in the canoe. Our host was wearing a Lectro SMV and a Sanken COS-11. He also had a very rare Parker 12 ga. double barrel shotgun across his lap as he started to paddle the canoe from the muddy bank. For some reason, our very helpful still photographer decided he would help us launch the canoe. He pushed on the rear upper fin sideways and the gunnels went down to an inch above the water. I told him to stop and not do that again. I was seated wearing the complete kit. I slowly put pressure against the bank with my Loon Boom Pole and we just broke free from the bank when the still guy pushed the canoe rapidly sideways “...to guide you guys in the right direction of your landing site...”. The canoe rapidly flooded over the gunnels and the host and I were tossed into the water. All gear flooded and lost. I went to my car when we got back to base camp and I pulled-out my Sound Devices 302 kit and finished the day with interviews and reality. No downtime, no production loss. Production insurance was depreciated value insurance and my DEVA and Lectro gear was over 5 years old so, I got $3250 for $28k gear loss. (One of the downsides of hanging on to gear). I now have full gear replacement insurance and rental replacement coverage to be able to keep working while I rebuild a new kit, if necessary. I charge the production extra for it. The MARF CF CARD from the Fusion was taken out of the machine and placed near a wall heater overnight. The next morning I was able to mirror it completely to .wav files. No audio lost! (Thank you Glenn!). The shotgun was recovered from the muddy bottom, broken down, cleaned and oiled by the show expert armorer (who was my first interview with the 302 kit) and is good as new. So, I rapidly built a Sound Devices MixPre 10T kit and it’s been great. I picked up 5 used Wisycom MCR42’s, and a couple MPR52’s and IFB’s for camera hops, etc... I Love them all. Big THANKS to all my mixing brothers and sisters for helping me find good used gear in a timely manner. I also picked-up a used Neumann KMR-82D digital short shotgun (my 81i has sounded good for years, and the backup although more robust Shoeps CMIT5 matches it’s quality with all the switches on). Sooo, now I have amassed all of this AES output gear, I want a mixer/recorder that can handle all that beautiful digital sound. I’m buying an 888 next week and going full digital with the XL-AES adapter. The MixPre10T kit will be standing by in the car should anything happen, but now my eyes are open along with my ears. Happy Mixing Everyone! Here’s to a busy 2021 and beyond! Tomm Dauenhauer - Attenuating Circumstances, Inc.

Hi Felipe, I agree with everyone here that sound gear holds up well, and good mixers can work with old gear and make good acceptable sound for TV, etc... For me the quantum leap is AES digital and the 888 will give me that. I’m getting a fair amount of virtual reality work these days and digital sound helps with the immersive experience. I rent my backup kits out on bigger shows that hire mixers without gear. Better rental money and far less hassle than a second rental house with all the tenant and maintenance issues and I can throw the kit in my closet when not in use. Put 4 kits on a series and watch the checks get bigger, not to mention the kits are usually paid for, so no monthly house payment stress. Stay Busy My Friend.

Hey Michael, Love the video. I 100% agree with what you said. I did an upgrade in March to solve a specific problem I had. I used to have a 688. That was my main mixer for everything I do. I originally got it to match another mixer in town in gear as much as could so I could supply a similar service he would to the client. I had it for a little over a year and got my money back and then some from that unit. I started to realize a problem doing this. For bag use, it was very heavy. I also noticed in all the gigs I did, I never used more than 8 channels of audio. And of course the 8 was only once or twice. Most of the time I used max 5. In march I sold the 688 to another person and bought a 833. This solved the very problem of weight in the bag and having more channels than I ever needed. So had problem with previous setup, solution was to get 833. I know I could have gone 633 but liked the 2 extra channels and the channel routing options. It is the perfect mixer for me for both cart and bag for my needs for now. Thank you Michael for the continued amazing content. You Rock!

Finally I was hoping someone would make a video about this! This is great Michael. Thank you! Yes, this year has been very tough indeed and it has made me rethink all of my gear investment options. Initially I was hopping to jump to an 833 from my zoomF8n for mainly 2 reasons; 1. For the extensive output routing capability of the 8series and Dante addition, which was lacking in the F8n 2. I was think down the road maybe 10years from now if this technology I’m investing in right now would still suffice to do the job. But then most of the work I do is narrative film and tv and I never had a scenario where I needed a massive channel count. And now I’m thinking maybe a used 688 would do the job just fine and they sound great!

I've been struggling with the upgrade problem for a while. I own a small kit that includes a Mixpre10T and two lectro 411a units. I've been having a tough time deciding what to upgrade or buy next, the 833 and the lectro dsqd seem like solid purchases. But I keep reminding myself that for the past two years 95% of my work have been talking heads, walk and talks or live news that require no more than 2 or 3 wires. Is it better to buy more gear with the hope that eventually I would get work that requires more stuff? Or would the smart move be to build a solid kit that can handle most productions and rent any additional gear. I think the second option is the way to go for me. This video is much appreciated! Hope everyone is staying safe and sane!
@MichaelWynneCAS

The struggle is real Mike! If I had to be absolutely straight up with you which I will the MixPre 10t is a great unit for what it is, but it really lacks the robustness of the 6 or 8 series line up as far as the hardware and also the output capability. My first thought is purchasing a used 633 from a trust worthy source would probably be your wisest economical upgrade move to keep your rig tidy, give you more common sense outputs and and would marry excellent with your two 411a's. Also hold on those 411a's even when you choose to ad/upgrade wireless. They will always come in use for all kinds of purposes. The Lectro DSQD looks like an excellent system but not one I'd use in a bag as it's physical design and hardware connections are designed for rack mount use. Lectrosonics is constnatly innovating and I have a feeling we'll see some slot mount digital SRD type optoins coming down the pipe which hopefully have the backwards digital hybrid wireless capability of the DSQD for those of us like yourself who want the most compatibility with our existing digital hybrid wireless.

I agree, hold off and wait when it comes to your wireless. The URC411 are still very very good, and it seems like over the next couple of years or so we might see some big steps forward with new products being released. Other companies will respond to Wisycom and bring out their own quad channel wireless receivers. And companies will keep on filling in their gaps, making them more attractive, like I bet Audio Ltd will bring out a smaller TX, and Shure might bring out baggable receivers for Axient Digital, etc etc... who knows! But these will all change up the equations as to what system is best to invest into.

Hi Mike, every mixer has different work situations, so if you’re only needing 2-3 wireless, work with what you know and stay comfortable. Lectro gear is always soild. I’ve worked with Zaxcom all digital gear since 2006. Digital is nice, but limited in its wireless range without sharkfin antennas and steel and glass are its enemy. Hybrid wireless, like Lectro 400 series and all Wisycom give you the range and robustness for good long-distance reception on whip antennas in a portable bag setup. It’s very hard to run and gun with sharkfins. Digital is virtually useless when recording car to car, through cement walls with rebar, etc. I ran extensive tests back in the day for ABC and every manufacturer’s all-digital wireless had major range problems in areas where walls, windows and cars were involved. Sony, Zaxcom, Lectro all came up short on a scale that made me ultimately reject them for ENG work with small portable whip antennas, which is all we could use on these shows. All digital is great for line of sight work or controlled stage situations where you can setup antenna arrays, well-placed sharkfins, etc... Lectro hybrid gear is what I spec’d for the series we worked on and it never failed us running and gunning worldwide. Now, Wisycom has the edge in digital hybrid sound quality and range. I’m sure that will change as competitors compete. All reports I’m getting from daily users of Wisycom MCR54’s has been excellent. My only concern is if an MCR54 goes down, you lose 4 channels instantly. Do I want a third $6200 MCR54 standing by as a backup? I can always pull out the second kit full of MCR42’s. Power distro should be setup for four receivers in any case, should you need to swap out receivers. I also have an AudioRoot Hirose system with two e-smart (Inspired Energy Lithium Battery) plug caps to be able to hot swap batteries and not lose anything. ABR - Always Be Rolling! Enjoy the Work!

Interesting video & discussion here in the comments, Michael! I got a good deal on a 688 back in 2017 (which was a big upgrade for me from a 442+744t).. and then scooped up a great deal on a used 633 in 2020. I didn't see the need to move up to an 833/888 just yet, as much as I'd love to have the latest & greatest.. the cost for all those new features wasn't justifiable for me. The 633 serves perfectly well for a lighter weight run & gun bag, to complement the heavier duty 688. Dante and more flexible virtual routing is definitely the most attractive aspects of the 8 series, Cedar/Noise assist is nice but it's pricy and not a priority feature for me (or a good majority of mixers).

Great video...kinda an anti-product review! Really enjoy these. (the Miami vice sound guy one was great!) I'd love to get the 633 (688 or 888). I have a Mix Pre 10t right now and we're doing small narrative work but want the sound to be as good as possible. I wanted too ask.. 'just for pure sound quality' (not bussing or routing or other location functions) does the 6 series provide a better sound quality that the mix pre10t...? i.e. for dialogue, foley, tone etc..And ..would it be noticeable to the average ear? If so can you recommend a good used route for the 6 or 8 series? (assuming great mics) Thx.
@MichaelWynneCAS
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Phil. I don't think the average ear could tell the difference between a MixPre series and 6 or 8 series. I did a video on the 6 & 8 series comparison you can watch and there is very little noticeable difference there as well. However, the biggest difference between the MixPre and 6/8 series recorders is hardware output options, and build quality. Production filming by it's nature is tuff on gear and the 6/8 series will take more abuse at the end of the day and give you more routing options when working. Try JW Sound group for used 6 series recorders or Facebook from a trustworthy source.

No, not really. 6 series are a bit more bass heavy than the mixpre if anything. If going solo work, I much prefer a MP6 over a 633/688. My biggest gripe with the mixpre are the powering options and the lack of service sound devices puts in them (had to bend power pins as they wont replace their plastic sleds after 3 months). 6 series you have separate gain and faders (which isn't a big issue with the new fw for mixpre), phrase and name/take lists and more options in the soundreport. The faders are more fun to work with and SL is a nice integration. You do however have remix capabilities and Q markers on the mixpre series which I find super useful for doc work.

I've always felt that upgrading or buying a piece of gear was necessary when I've found myself needing to rent or modify something in my current kit to suite the jobs I do. One thing Im really working on investing in is wireless. I'm really looking at wireless that can do what I need it to but wireless I can also pay for. I'm drooling over the new lectros rn but I know realistically I don't need digital at the moment and the 8k for 2 channels price tag. For my type of work, having more wireless is better so I opted for the 4 channel wisy instead as that solves my problem of needing more wireless while still not sacrificing in performance or sound quality. And lastly, I never buy kit I can't profit off of. I would love so many little niche mics and bits and bobs but I don't buy them if I can't use them regularly enough to make that money back relatively quickly.

But but but. You have an X3 wasnt that an upgrade from the 688? But I guess different tools for different jobs, if you can financially justify to still keep them. I grabbed a new, way to cheap MP10t this year from leftover stock, which has served me good so far for more channels than the MP6. I could technically sell the MP6 for almoust nothing, and it still my favourite recorder for small gigs due to the size. I guess something similair could be said for your extra recorders? Was it you that had a conversation with Trew that pointed out that the people that sold their systems soon was the ones that didnt end up losing so much money? I really want better wireless, but making what I can with the 2000/G3 in the meanwhile. Its tempting to get "a little but better". But I really want my next step to be remotely controlled for gain and frequencies. So holding off till wisy releases their new TX (the RX ticks so many boxes for me), as they normally do an introductory price for TX and RX. Until then I will probably have SMA modded and distro to the G3s already.. hehe.

Where's the less capable 633 used to fill that void which is now a back up for the medium size 688/CL12 cart. Lots of great deals from the us with 600mhz equipment. But I also dont want to manually coordinate for what feels like an enternity with RF Explorer and freqfinder. I guess we will see a bit more of a mess if no licence is required as well. To just do a few taps as with zax to scan and deploy frequencies seems brilliant and would save so much time, especially when moving location. Also now personal space is more sensitive than before.

@@MichaelWynneCAS surprisingly I have been using the 552 a little teeny bit this year (after going perhaps a couple of years without using it at all), as there are some errr "events" I'm needing a portable mixer to manage handling the talkers on stage and the feeds out to the speakers for those listening (in a large outdoor space of course). Not normally someone who works in live events, but the 552 does this job perfectly fine for simple/volunteering needs like this. Using the 552 again this weekend for that purpose.

In latinamerica budgets are really tight. So, I have to shrink my head to configure my bag. I agree 100%. But even that I do it well. 45 years on the road. Love my job. !!
