Welcome back Dylan. I know exactly what you are dealing with as a content creator - That pressure to show up and perform can be brutal some days. It has happened many times over my short time here. Taking that space to reflect and regain focus is part of the journey. Glad to have you back and excited to see you crush it. ❤

We don't love you because you're the Magnus of Catan. We love you because we feel connected to your journey and growth and because you give us a player to cheer on who we feel invested in. Remember what MJ said: "I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed."

Videos to fall asleep with is a compliment. Summoning Salt made an entire career out of that.
@juaja1197
Ай бұрын
It's also simply a genre of videos. For a video to be good to fall asleep to, a video needs to be the right length (20-30 mins is best), be slow enough paced, and be interesting enough to make people want to start watching it. It's a niche that needs to be fulfilled, not an insult, and a video that some use for falling asleep can still be a great video.

With your posting frequency, people like me could rely on having new content to relax to every other day. I think I can speak on behalf of others that even though we all share an interest in catan, its strategy and drama, we were watching in large part because of you, not the game. If your videos help people unwind, even fall asleep I'd say you're making a great service to us. Now, your own well being is more important than our entertainment and comfort so we happily welcome you back as long as you get to enjoy the process for the most part as well. For most of us, no need for pressure to perform well, we like your personality and take on this game.

I got into Catan and started watching you last year. The internet grind is hard, especially as a game player because your expectations for yourself can be higher than your viewers. I think having fun is important with this game for you. I liked your videos because of the educational bits whether you win or lost. It shouldn’t be all about winning every time, you just gotta find the love and fun of the game again. Good luck brother

I follow a poker vlogger. They post all the interesting sessions, even the ones where they lose. I feel like it's very important to SHOW those games too, both to learn from and to show the audience that yes, it is human to make mistakes. Yes, sometimes luck just doesnt go your way. And it is valid to be upset about it. Don't shy away from posting the non-winning sessions. We are not here because we want to watch the absolute best Catan plays. We're here because you make it fun.

Videos to fall asleep to is not a backhanded compliment. I fall asleep to brilliantly written novels and non-fiction all the time with a sleep timer and then go back a bit and pick up again where I left off. It has to be interesting enough to engage the brain fully but not force you to look at the screen, which means excellent explanations. I've definitely used many of my favorite strategy game creators' content this way and I'm a professional game designer. Heck, I used your videos as an example in a game design talk at riot games.

You're super helpful! Falling asleep to videos is a complement - like listening to music, a book, tv, or something to go to sleep. You don't have to be perfect. I watch Chess Vibes play games all the time and he loses some times and it's still good content to watch. Even in the last few years, you've been great to watch. Either way, have a good life. You don't have to be "consistent". Thank you for the content! Thank you, thank you, thank you! No matter where you go next! Congrats on your endeavors. Certainly, if you need to take a step back from KZitem or anything for important stuff, then that makes perfect sense. Family, providing, church, friends, and fun for yourself all trump this amazing channel you've built. No pressure at all. Thank you again!

Been watching for years, big fan! From what I’ve seen being in the social media / entertainment industry on & off since I was 15, what you’re feeling is very natural (especially the part about feeling resentment / having a moral injury from turning your love into your livelihood). If you really love your art (in your case, your storytelling, your filmmaking, and your journey to mastery of Catan), you will find that you can’t help but return to it, over and over again. You’ll find that once the sting of the initial the moral injury fades a bit, you can’t help but dip in again (off-camera, and not even for views or to share with an audience). And I find that you’ll usually soften up on your own expectations & self-criticism over time as you learn more about yourself & hear more stories from your fellow artists / entrepreneurs. You’re 100% right that they and you are just human. But that’s not a bad thing or anything that you even need to forgive. It’s a blessing to know yourself, see yourself, acknowledge your struggles & obstacles you’ve overcome. You will naturally want to be kinder to yourself. I also just wanted to throw the idea out there to anyone thinking about this stuff that in 2024, it is 100% fine to do your passion as your very serious hobby, and not depend on it as your income source. You don’t have to feel bad about coming & going on your own KZitem channel. We’re all just glad you’re here. Some of the most high-performing & successful artists I know prefer to keep their art as their very serious hobby (that they may actually dedicate more time to than their income-producing job). And some have gained their success BECAUSE they had that creative freedom. Some high-profile public examples would be Mark Rober not quitting Apple until he passed like 10M subscribers, or the CEO of Paterson being the drummer of a popular band. Wishing you the best, Dylighted! Enjoy nationals :) PS - thanks for putting GEN on my radar, his stuff is sick!!

Appreciate the upload Dylan- you played a big role in getting me and my friends into Catan! I've always appreciated your content and I hope you know we don't all hold you to the same standards you hold yourself to. It's OK to post your losses and your misplays, and as someone who's pointed out some of your misplays in the comments before, I don't do it to highlight your weaknesses and inconsistencies, I do it because I enjoy participating and mentally following the game & I'm just curious to analyze your decision-making. Keep it cool, keep it casual, and try not to fret! We appreciate you. Don't burn yourself out worrying about monetization and making it a job, do it for yourself. You're an inspiration, man. Also, regarding people falling asleep to your videos: There are a tremendous assortment of people whose KZitem following is 90% people who put their videos on in the background and pay no attention to them, falling asleep/driving/working and using it as essentially complex white noise. It's a real compliment; people don't find it boring, they find it relaxing and soothing. Thanks again for the upload. I'd tell you to keep it up, but I don't want to increase the pressure lol! I hope you can learn to love Catan again. Edit: Finished watching the Catan match and what a game it was! Super close, tons of table talk, interesting resource distribution. Fantastic!

I am a normal guy doing programming for minecraft, I was part of the team who developed the crafter for example, and even if I feel like a normal guy for others I'm a cool minecraft developer, same with you being a youtube who is very good at Catan! What others say is not the issue neither is your intellectual interpretation of what is happening, but feelings of those things matter as well, it can be rough for sure, but know that even if you're not happy with quality or misplays etc. Most of your audience is happy to have your voice and thoughts around!

Dyl I've watched your videos for years now, and I'll continue to watch no matter what you do. I joined a discord server and found great people in the community to play with. I joined a tournament one day and found myself in a game with you! I was beyond excited, I was so nervous and kept blundering just because I was so happy to be in a game with the biggest Catan inspiration to me! I've never been happier to lose a game of Catan to someone. Man its been awhile since you post anything and a champion to everyone for this its coming from the heart and i can relate with this so much and i know how much trying to make something you love into a business/relationship with anyone in your life i spent 7 years of my life locked into 24 hour supervision from my family for poor life choices and not even the idea of being back in jail if something happens in my life i have severe PTSD due to content harassment and bullying from my family threatening me to call the cops on me if i did not do what was told to do and haveing to live life knowing im alone withing my own family with them threatening me constantly cause im from a family the mostly works for the state government jobs think of a government body and ya there some family there from substitute teachers to state patrol and everyone military for 6 generations and I have been watching my step walk down this path of egg shells and it makes me feel better knowing that is not always a bad thing being open for those around you but trying to reach for something broken is hard to repair ive seen many people give up if i can go through 7 years of my life under the level of critics im around in my life on a personal level i have been in alot of dark places in my life and played Catan with my family for years and always have been watching your content and just kinda realizing more now how your professionalism your outputting outwords makes its hard to do anything when you try holding your self soo high for so long slow and steady will go a long way if your always looking for protection then your looking at it wrong you cant grow if you place a flea in a jar it can never learn to push its self it hits the lid and get hurt so it learns to jump to just under the lid if you remove that lid it will spend the rest of its life only ever jumping that high you learn from your past and punishing your self for never passing your mistakes instead of learning tomorrow is a new day and you are in new ground so leep and keep reaching higher Love your content been watching for years hope to keep seeing you post for a few more years

I think a number of people have already mentioned this but for me, I started watching you from your viral video of your live tournament journey. And that got me hooked. From that point on, I didn't care whether you won or lost, it was just about witnessing your journey in to this unique game and its community that I knew very little about. I'll admit, I was pretty bummed to find out that most of your content after that was more just you posting online wins and less about your journey. I can't speak for everyone but I'll say, I'm here for the story and a lens into this community of people I know little of, more than just watching some guy win games and looking impressive doing it. I totally understand how a hobby that elvoles to a source of income quickly loses all of its joy, so I hope you are able to find a balance with that. Or just find a way to get your joy of the game back and still make money doing it. Hoping for the best man!

Your videos are super entertaining. Got me into catan and even when I stopped playing it I would watch your videos while eating. Happy to see you are back. Something that makes redundant game content interesting is yapping. The clash royale youtuber Ken does this really well. I havent played cr in years nor do I now, but I watch his videos every day purely because he is interesting. The videos are him playing clash royale (at a high level) and he talks half about the game and half about some story in his life. The game is almost a background or complimentary to whatever point he is making or event that he is recalling. He doesn't sacrifice game talk and always talks about strategy or what hes doing in game, but there is a lot of dead time in games that is hard to fill. I think the yap about random things strategy is super entertaining and makes watching the games fun. Would recommend looking at the playlists on his channel and I would love to see catan videos like that. You could talk about your time as a teacher or in college or whatever but it would make the catan gameplay so much more interesting.

Cover your mental and emotional bases by meeting your own needs and satiating yourself. Finding balance to live a fulfilling life. Don't give up on that pursuit. Failure is part of getting better! It's way more fun to see your honest and transparent route to improvement than manufactured content for clicks. I honestly think that going back to your roots will help grow your channel. Joy is contagious and hope you can find that in the game once again. I can't wait to see where you take your content. Best of luck, may the dice rolls be in your favor :P

I loved the honesty here. The feeling of knowing that yes these things don't matter, but there is a difference of knowing it vs accepting it when we are down.

I loved learning about your decision making for the game, and I've learned so much from it. I hope you'll continue to post because we don't care about the results. We like watching you play.

Welcome back, Dylan! I'm glad you feel re-energized and that you want to love the game again. It's not a perfect game, but as you know it's the imperfections that make it worthwhile. I also liked your decision to not pop in the penultimate turn.

I really appreciate your openness about the burnout after playing this game for so long and trying to create Catan-related content. I enjoyed getting to meet you at nationals this past weekend and wish you the best as you learn to love the game again.

I am no content creator but I can relate to your struggles. Several times in life I've allowed internal pressure to turn things I've been passionated about into something I just can't stand doing. Feeling forced to do something despite knowing all too well its for the wrong reasons. Finding your channel reignited my love for board games. I've thoroughly loved following your youtube journey. When you are passionated and excited about something that excitement is very infectious and entertaining. Everyone know that you are a great player, very few of us if any actually cares how well you do comptitively. We just want to watch along as you do something you enjoy doing. Whether you come back to Catan or not I hope you keep being this honest and true to yourself. Its the only way for real progress in life

Dylighted, thank you so much for sharing this with us. The fact that you have realized all of these issues and that you are ready to admit them publicly shows that you are on the right way to find your inner peace and the love for the game. I honestly had seen the change in the past year and a half. I felt that some of your games had become extremely win-oriented, there were times you were too manipulative, and when you were explaining your rationale it felt like you were first of all trying to convince yourself first. And it felt sad because you seem like a genuinely nice person, and you also have a reasonably large audience, which means that your behavior and words influence others. So, welcome back, and I can't wait for you to start enjoying the game again!! And please, share some embarassing defeats as well. I think it would be amazing if you could analyze defeats and explain what you did wrong. We always learn more from mistakes.

Hey Dylan! First of all, thanks for sharing! Trust me, im no youtuber, but ive been playing catan last 6 months or so, non stop, trying to get better almost every day, climb the ladder... And even though i try my best to keep my emotions under control, the catan game itself makes it impossible to stay positive sometimes. Dealing with toxicity, entitled players or just bad gameplay from others on daily bases, kinda ruined my experience. I cant remmember last time i had fun. Feel like im just wasting my time. Even when i win a tough match up, or have one of those games when you roll like a god, im not feeling any joy. But hearing you say that you struggled with same issues makes me want to play again. 😊 Im currently sitting top 15 and maybe, just maybe ill make it into top 10, haha. Ill be here watching you get back to it! Gl have fun, and thx in advance!

This is so common and normal actually! I’ve often found that really caring about something can turn from love to hate all the time! It means that you’re passionate and feel strongly about Catan is all. Don’t feel too bad about not posting either! Your KZitem success has been pretty strange, you’ve had several videos pop off huge and I can’t imagine the pressure that puts on you. I like your videos because for me you showed me there’s a lot of depth in Catan I had ignored and you are first class at explaining your actions and strategy. Not sure how much this will help but I’m in your corner at least. Good luck with the retraining arc!

Man you made the best catan videos out there! Watching losing games is fun too because it leaves more suspense to the video. At a certain point playing catan 100% optimally becomes more work than fun.

I'm proud of you for posting this video. I'm older than you but I look up to you as a player because I've seriously elevated my game by studying your channel. I've always enjoyed the parts of your videos where you point out your inaccuracies, we'd never look down on you for your mistakes.

Yo Dylan, your content is really awesome and I always appreciate it whenever you post. We don't watch your videos because of production quality, we watch them because of you, sir. As someone that started playing Catan competitively in early 2022. I used a lot of your tutorials to learn and become better at the game. I can relate a lot to the opening of this video even though I dont make money for the content. Videos and streams I have contributed to catan, I recently have had some serious mental battles about the game and my confidence and growth as a player here and there. Losing 2 irl qualifiers with win in hand and losing another chance to compete at US nationals really hurt. If you remember our game in Austin TX Dylan :P At the end of the day, I ran into the same issue and questioned why I was playing? It wasn't feeling fun anymore and that made me sad. I was starting to become angry and cynical again while playing. I had to return to the drawing board and rethink about what made Catan fun for me? I realized improving at the game and trying to become one of the best was only a small part of it. The bigger picture is getting to play with various different players with various playstyles online and in person. Meeting new players and Growing together in a community and showing strong sense of collaboration in the games I play. When the table is balanced and the game comes down to everyone having a shot. These games don't happen very often due to the nature of the game.. Win or lose those are by far the best Catan games. Improving as a player is not just a fundamental analytical journey. Its a social and mental journey as well. It took a long time to fully realize this. But I think I can move forward now stronger than ever. Thank you for sharing your story with us Dylan and for others to reflect on their own ❤

Mental Health and caring for yourself is the priority. You have to find ways to have fun. You have to take care of yourself. Good to see you again. I've always enjoyed how you talk about the game, but I know that whether it's a once a week or once a month thing, make sure you take care of yourself. I'd be happy to play you in this or chess or something. Just have fun.
