Hello, for me gravel riding is about adventure, exploration of various terrains, i dont hunt max speeds or strava segments. I got my bike 1x . 40t chainring and 11-42cassete. Like you said its all about expectations. I dont expect to run 45km/h on flats on my gravel bike and iam also not picky about cadence. I just like simplicity of 1x. I just wanna say 1x isnt that bad. I beat huge alpine climbs without a problem. But i understand your opinion and fully respect it. Keep it up nice job!

Thanks for sharing! Yeah, no right or wrong answer. If it works for you, that's all that matters! Certainly much simpler...I run 1x on my fat bike for much the same reason. Thanks for the comment, and Ride On!

my idea how to achieve wider range for 1x is invest in deraileur cage extender fit cassete 11-50 and also invest in 44 or 46 chainring. 🙂

I fully agree with all your points. I have much the same sort of setup 2 wheelsets - one with 45mm deep carbon wheels and 32mm panaracer gravel king SS (in lieu of road wheels) and another set of carbon wheels that at 38mm deep , 24 internal width and 40mm gravel tires. It really is the best of both worlds. I'm coing more from a MTB background and gravel is what made me love dropbars. and laying down long miles on pavement on a gravel biek has been as fun as slamming singletrack ! And yes MTB SPD clips all the way.

Now that I've decided to do this myself, I'm rediscovering everyone's old videos talking about it. At least I know I'm not crazy. Curious: did you run SPD-SL pedals (or similar road cleats) on your road bike or were those just mountain/gravel SPD pedals as well? If so, did you ever try them on your gravel bike running the road? I currently have mountain SPDs on the gravel bike but I'm really tempted to take the road cleats (blue SPD-SLs) from my now defunct road bike and start swapping them into the dual gravel/road setup as well. Most of my gravel riding is longer and planned out by at least a week or two so my thinking is the SL's will be the daily rider and give me a bit more power. I could just swap them with mountain pedals/wheels with some notice. Definitely feel more locked in, but maybe that's just a placebo.

I always just ran Time ATAC MTB style pedals on my gravel/road setup. I’m too lazy to constantly change pedals. If you have a stiff MTB shoe, probably marginal difference with road pedals/cleats.

I'm in the same boat, I'm an ex-road racer who prizes speed and efficiency and I sold my road bike as well. As long as you have a gravel bike that's light and has geometry that's fairly similar to a road bike's, it's literally no slower when you put road tires on it.

Thanks for good video, Gravelbikes are good on road , also without swopping wheels, tyres and gearingcogs. But to win a roadrace on a gravelbike you probably need some modification. Gravelbikes gives more comfort and safety on terrible roads. I have a 11-42 casette with 11 cogs (1x11). That gearing is plenty close enough for me, actually so close that I often click two gears when I want something lighter. But 40-11 is for me difficult to pedal much faster than 40 km/h, which mean I could like one extra heavy gear. But I really do not need that speed. I only go biking for excersise, commuting or recreation.

I don't actually ride in gravel yet but I do ride on some rough roads in Illinois. I have changed my Trek Domane AL6 over to a 1x 42 with an 11-42 cassette and GRX rear derailleur. Reynolds Assault carbon wheels and Continental GP tubeless 700x32 tires. It has all the gears I need and the spacing on the gears is not a problem. No front derailleur trimming or moving back and forth between chain rings.

You could. It’s all the rage to convert old 90s mtbs to drop bar gravel bikes right now. Biggest problem I see is the geometry. mtbs not designed for drops so you’d need to shorten the reach. I do a lot of road riding so would rather have a more road oriented bike for gravel. But everyone has their preference. Thanks for stopping by.

I don't think it should be a problem. Designed to clear up to 700x45. My Panaracer GK SKs are 700x43, tend to measure a bit wide, and have plenty of room. Ramblers have a bit more tread, but I think you would be ok.

Thanks for another great video. I have a question for you, and please keep an open mind 😅. I am a mountain biker, I own a road bike but it spends most of its time on the trainer. I don’t trust those skinny tires, but during the summer, when the bugs are really bad in the woods and they suck the fun out of the rides, I am pushed to the roads. I have a bunch of friends with Stigmatas (and they absolutely love it, thats why I am thinking on this bike and not the Diverge) and have been paying attention to their set ups, I can’t ride with them when they do gravel since my road bike is not equipped for it and I would be too slow in my SC Tallboy. When I do more than 60 miles on the roads, my shoulders are killing me, my arms are sore, I am not having fun anymore, so, bear with me, I was thinking that if I get this bike, I would put flat bars on it. (I am 44, not thaaat old!) I would think from a roadie perspective it would sound stupid, but on those road rides, I miss the comfort and control of my MTB handlebars. What do you think? Should I go hide in a corner in shame? 😂
@TheLankyCyclist
3 жыл бұрын
I think your Stigmata friends may not want to ride with you if you put flat bars on your bike. Joking aside, I'm no mechanic, but I'm not sure how easy it would be to bodge road shifters onto a flat bar. I mean people do it, I think. I come from the road side of things, and only recently have started mountain biking. I find my MTB bars super uncomfortable, but have managed to tweak the fit. So that would be my advice. If you haven't already gotten a professional bike fit done, I would recommend going that route first. If you're getting arm/shoulder pain, then probably too much weight on those parts and not enough on your sit bones. Could try adding some spacers, shortening stem, trying different bars. Good thing is that you haven't bought your Stig yet, so you're still at the point that you could try a different size. Maybe you're too stretched out on your current rig? Also, us not thaaat old folks (I turned 40 this year), need to spend more time hitting the core work. A strong core can also help take the load off your upper extremities. Hope this helps, and good luck!

@TheLankyCyclist

@@leaurend1 I don't know much about Priority or internally geared hubs in general. Bike is 24lbs which isn't light. If you're not racing, you might not care, but hills will be less fun. Comes with a 50t on the front which would be good for road but maybe less so for gravel. I don't know what the gear ratios would be with the hub, but you might want something easier if you live someplace hilly. The tires at 700cx40 come tubeless ready. I think the WTBs would be a good on road or off road tire. If you want to run two wheelsets like I do in the video, I don't think it will be easy to do with the Priority given the hub and lack of quick release. Hope that helps a bit. I haven't seen many reviews of this bike.
