I also developed dry eyes after using tretinoin for 2 years. I suddenly woke up and had dry eyes one day, and I had already heard of the anecdotes connecting tretinoin with dry eyes, so I stopped using tretinoin for about a week and my eyes improved. To test it, I used it again, and my eyes were worse the next day. Then a few days later I tried it one more time but made sure to keep it far from my eyes (like 2 inches clear of my eye area) and the next morning my eyes were feeling awful so I quit tretinoin for good. I still don’t feel 100% certain that tretinoin was the cause but I quit it to be safe because dry eyes are so uncomfortable. I still suffer from dry eyes to this day, 2 years after quitting tretinoin. I also used to wear contacts and had to stop because they are too uncomfortable aside from special occasions. I do have a mold problem in my home due to water damage and I moved here a few months before developing dry eyes, so again, I’m not 100% certain that tretinoin is to blame, as the mold could be a factor irritating my eyes. However I don’t think it’s worth the risk to introduce tretinoin again.

Started tretinoin 0.025% in 2017 and have been consistent ever since. Just started to cut back a little lately cause my skin looked irritated sometimes. I think ill keep applying it maybe once or twice a week. Been doing it 4-5 times a week for several years. Even around the eyes. Haven't noticed any fat loss or eye dryness. Minimum side effects regarding flakiness of the skin. I'm also using spot treatment with peroxide benzoyl against pimples when i get them. Basic moisturizer from embryolisse and eucerin suscreen. Just started out aquaphor from zucerin against irritation. I think it acts like vaseline. Have you considered using it only on your neck ?

That's so good to hear you haven't experienced any dry eyes. I don't think tretinoin caused dry eyes for me, but I want to be on the safe side so I don't exacerbate it. I've considered using it on my neck, but the science isn't clear whether it's the tretinoin getting into your eyes, or if it causes inflammation in certain skin types (like rosacea, in my case) that travels to the meibomian glands. Maybe unlikely, but I'm not taking any chances right now
@CiceroSapiens
4 ай бұрын
You do not want to apply 4-5 tiimes a week. Apply 2-3 times a week. If it's irritated, make sure you're doing your skin barrier, 4x hydrating toner then a layer of some type of centella essence serum or ampoule. And if you want to cut down, go down to Differin,a. 1% retinol gel, and frankly, retinol effective amount is 5% so tretinoin might be overkill. The reason you don't want to go overboard is that you can get a permanent allergic reaction - so now I have rosacea, and while I am no longer showing allergy to retinol because of my approach, the rosacea is permanent, and I have to manage it every day.

I wish we had more research/clinical consensus around this! Right now I’m only aware of correlation between dry eye and tretinoin use, which could be explained by the significant increase in dry eye risk simply from aging. But if tret does hurt MGs, that’s a serious concern! I find that eye docs tend to be wary of tret whereas derms have the opposite bias and it’s difficult as a patient to discern. In my mind the risk of dry eye as a quality of life issue far outweighs any cosmetic concerns for those at risk, so I’ve been reconsidering my own routine and I think your choice is a wise one 💛

Me too. I would love for the AAD and AAO would come together and create some type of guidance or statement. Unfortunately, there's literally no research (that I could find) on the effects of topical tret and MGD. Just like you said, derms seem to be positive about tret and downplay its potential adverse effects on eyes, while eye docs are much more cautious (I've seen this firsthand!).

Here's my experience from someone with Papulopustular Rosacea - I have been using Soolantra for almost 2 months now for my Rosacea (with good results thus far) and I also re-started Tretinoin 3 nights ago (I use it every night). My Dermatologist did not say that I cannot use it. My skin is doing really well, and I can see the few pustules I had drying up and healing with no new ones forming. I am using the same strength as you, but the gel form. What I do is I place a pea size amount in my palm, then I add my peptide serum to it (a fair amount) and pat it with my finger to get the Tret to mix. I then rub my hands together and apply this to a dry face. Do NOT mix Tret gel with moisturisers, most of the time it just ends up balling up on the skin. I have no signs of Tret dryness/flaking this way, and for me it's the best way to apply Tretinoin gel, plus I like doing this more than just applying straight Tret to the face. Some say mixing Tretinoin with a moisturiser or other product will cause hot spots, but I personally don't agree as I've had the best results so far with this method. In saying that, we have different Rosacea types and that means we may just have different experiences with things like Tret. I suggest you speak to your Dermatologist about your process with Tret - will your Rosacea redness/flushing eventually settle and decrease over time with Tret (because that can happen for some of us Rosacea sufferers) and if so, what sort of time period would that involve (Dermatologist advice who knows your skin). Having this discussion could really help your decision, your Dermatologist will hopefully help you find a way that is the least irritating for your own Rosacea. There might be another topical cream you can use while using Tret to help the flushing in the beginning, for example I use Elidel cream in the morning (this is for inflammation and it does reduce Rosacea redness) and then my Soolantra at night (which obviously won't apply to your Rosacea type). Indeed though, the question then is "do I even want to go through this?" lol. Another option is short contact therapy with Tret - applying it for maybe 1 hour or so, and then washing it off. I do believe you would still get benefits from this without a doubt if it happened to work well for you, and if that's the one way that works for you, there is no reason to not just keep using Tret that way! I actually did that method in the past with the gentle Some Bi Mi Miracle toner. I would apply it and leave it on my skin for just 1 hour and wash it off once a week, and I promise you it worked for my skin as well as the stronger acid serums other people use and leave on their skin overnight. I still got visible benefits, just without the irritation. For Tret in general, it's not a "miracle cream" in my opinion - it cannot magically erase already deep set wrinkles, and I don't personally believe it erases any wrinkles entirely, but it can reduce/improve the appearance of fine lines, yes. I think starting Tret at a younger age is most beneficial (20s and 30s). I don't personally have wrinkles at this stage, only some fine lines under my eyes when I smile and I get botox done for forehead wrinkles and crows feet. I've avoided the sun for 10 years now, which has definitely helped my skin regarding less aging, and I do believe it did the same for you as well having avoided the sun for even longer than me. However, I like Tret for the incredibly smooth skin, the improvement in blackheads/pores and the beautiful skin glow after I wash and dry my face before putting any products on. I also use it because my Dermatologist told me it is "proven to reverse skin cancer-inducing DNA damage". It's important to note, Tret will not treat/cure an already present skin cancer, but it can lessen and lower the chances of such things ever developing (though obviously this is NOT a replacement for sunscreen lol). Overall I think people need to be more realistic with expectations when it comes to Tretinoin, and some KZitemrs are not being honest when they claim it removed their wrinkles, but they don't disclose that they get botox/fillers done. We have many muscles in the face that contract and move constantly, which means lines and wrinkles will always be present to some degree. Tretinoin can help slow down the aging process to a certain degree yes, but again, we need to be realistic - genetics, as well as having a good daily skincare routine plus sunscreen and a healthy diet play a huge role, and even with all of this, we cannot STOP aging entirely, but certainly we can work at lessening the severity in both appearance and effects, and personally I am all for doing that myself! I feel my best mentally when I take care of my appearance as well as my diet. I believe we get the best out of anti-aging routines when treated with a multi-angled approach - diet, skincare, getting sufficient sleep, taking care of our mental health and yes, cosmetic procedures (I choose botox with a little bit of fillers, but there are so many other options such as facials, lasers, microneedling etc etc). I think for yourself, your routine is obviously working fantastic for you, and if Tret just doesn't work out or you decide not to try it again, then I would truly not worry about it. Remember, it was never Tret that gave you your great skin now! It was everything else you've been doing for years up until this point (and I am a HUGE believer in avoiding the sun as well, you are proof of that so well done!). Bakuchiol, I do believe, is a solid alternative.

I read the articles; there's a reason this long-overlooked deep blue jar was in practically every American's bathroom for generations. 5 main ingredients: camphor, menthol, eucalyptus, linseed oil (aka flaxseed oil), soybean oil. So versatile. Use as a facial cleanser, shave cream, sunburn balm, makeup remover. Super hydrating, anti-inflammatory/anti-bacterial, fatty acids, Omega-3, deep cleaning, infamously refreshing/tingling. And cheap. Would love to see a video contrasting this cheap cleanser with a La Mer 'luxury' cleanser. Due to the way medicine is practiced (specialized), derms don't really understand how tretinoin can affect the eyes. I have seen opthamalogists say they've seen it induce dry eye. Of course there aren't enough studies on this, but this is something clinicians who specialize in ocular issues see. Anecdotally, tret has induced irreversible perioral dermatitis and rosacea in a lot of people. It's not to demonize the product at all, but it's frustrating to see people push back against these experience because the studies don't necessarily show this. You can't generalize the average and apply it to a specific case. It's why medicine is trial and error ultimately. It's not for everyone.

@@brandonmilesmay Definitely, you can't discount the real-life experience of Tret users, research notwithstanding. So if the trade-off for smooth, wrinkle-free skin is thin, fragile skin, you're just replacing one sign of aging with another, & potentially incurring more insidious health conditions. Besides, the 'official' Tret-favoring reports may be driven/tainted by agendas we're not aware of (like those 'scientific' claims in the 1960s assuring consumers that sugar is harmless & fat in food is public enemy #1). Just the fact that you need a (Big Pharma-enriching) prescription for Tret makes me uncomfortable. Listen to your gut instinct! Plus, I've heard that once you commence a Tretinoin regimen, you can't stop it without losing all benefits to date, or worse. Don't become a Tret hostage!
