I have an ap1 and the first upgrade I did was replacing all the ap1 retainers, keepers, and springs with ap2. Did that 3yrs ago and my car still drives like a dream. No need to go f22c motor. 9k all day!

kelvinballer23 you should change the valve cover too, so u can get the newer ppv valve, that burns less oil. The valve cover is only like 200 new.

In the UK we kept the F20 engine after 2004, but it is designated 'F20C2' instead of 'F20C1'. It still revs to 9,000 RPM, but has the AP2 Valve Retainers and doesn't burn oil. Mine has 92,500 miles and it runs like a new car. I wonder if you could have found a F20C2 engine?

The only difference compared to early 99 engines are valve retainers and banjo bolts (the bolts that spray oil at the crank). I've had these components replaced in my 01 engine with AP2 versions (retainers are strong and banjo bolts have more holes for increases lubrication) so it should be bullet proof now. A good baffled oil pan is still needed for track time (I've used a J's without issues for several years)

Same here. I swapped the banjo bolts and retainers at 40k miles. Im at 70k now and it doesnt burn oil at all. I dont baby it either.

Awesome man. I ended up with a f20c jdm replacement unit and it runs amazingly compared to my old usdm one. Feels way smoother, more torquey, and way better gas mileage. Burns far less oil too, like an incredible amount. The 04 and up motors dont burn any from what i've been told which is sweet but I got a deal on the jdm f20c I couldn't pass up, but i was shooting for the 04-05 engine.

T Ly If AP1 piston speed equivalent is 8500-8600 RPM so I wonder how bad an extra 400 RPM would be. I think it would have bad long term effects but here and there probably not too bad.

It's fine going to 9ish in the lower gears for the most part, 1st, 2nd, 3rd preferably to 8.5k...but in 4th-6th you risk, over time, ovaling out your cylinders... It's not so much the rpms, it's how long you're there ... 8400/8500 in all gears is perfectly acceptable... Besides, at ~8350 "most" cars start noticeably falling off on the dyno power wise depending on breathing mods... This is per the multiple racing team testimonials not mine
@DRTB4G

Btw, f22 motors w/ well over 100k miles of being raced and taken to 9k often in only the Lower gears, have been torn down and shown time and time again to show wear well within the normal range at that mileage....

Play it safe, just go to 8500ish...i have about 63k(85k total on motor) of putting my f22 up there, and I just did a valve adjustment and leak down... It's perfect! Did 223whp... same dyno 5yrs ago it put down 221whp...yes I know *variables"... Still, didn't "lose" power, and it was 8° warmer...

you need to buy a rev limiter control module. that cuts your fuel pump and ignition at your desired 8k max rpm. any time racing your car, like you said you make a mistake and downshift in too low of a gear you over rev and damage the engine, without it you risk revving that engine up to the 9k the the stock ap1 ecu is set at. thats way to high for the piston stroke of that motor.
@arslanbilly
6 жыл бұрын
I have a ap1 with a full ap2 conversion besides the ecu which is still ap1, ap1 runs a bit rich so my mpg suffers but besides that no issues however ive revved accidentally to 9k 3 times and no damage don’t recommend it though
@johnconnor7501
6 жыл бұрын
StreamingFailure I did the research. As long as your ECU is from 2000 or 2001 you can use it with an f22c engine. Also, 8.5 k rpm is safe. Anything beyond and piston speeds become to high. It's not going to break if you 9k every once in a while but don't abuse it.

AP1 valve retainers will not crack under normal conditions. they may or may not crack during an over-rev. AP2 retainers will not crack in the event of an over-rev. they provide some insurance in that situation.

I did the rigid collars at the same time I did my Ohlins and wheels/tires so no idea if they really help damping. I do believe they keep the sub frames from shifting out of alignment.
@Zygrene

The better damping is likely just in my head. I really don't feel a significant difference so far. Maybe on track it'll be apparent.

Guys, I'm so damn torn. I've seen every single last S2000 video on the internet, and for the life of me, I can't decide between an AP1 or AP2. I've driven both, and I find the AP1 to be more visceral and exciting over all (which is my priority), but considering I plan to have it as my daily driver and keep it for the rest of my life, I can't help but think the AP2 might be better in that sense. What do you guys think?
@Zygrene
6 жыл бұрын
Neither car is a great daily. Yes - the AP2 is more refined, rides better, and has more torque, but it's still a pretty uncomfortable and impractical car. The improvements aren't enough for me to prefer it over the AP1 as a SPORTS CAR. If you can, buy whichever S2000 you enjoy driving the most, and buy a practical daily!

A 2.2 liter engine at 8000rpm ,its the same weight for the piston as a 2liter at 9000 rpm . So yeah keep it at 8k cause if you rev That 2.2 at 9k like the 2 L. For the engine is going to feel more 10k.
