This Video is deeply inspiring. I have studied in the acoustics section and am working now in the Naval area. Your arguments, why you changed your job, could have come from me, because I feel the same way. This area is fascinating, but I have no impact and I really want to be productive, create something. You are, what I would like to become. It is beautiful that you are exactly where you want to be. I Hope that I can get into the Software Engineer section myself in the near future.

I'm a mechanical engineering student and dreams about getting into the aerospace field in the future but I do agree with almost all of your points. Like with most of the things it sounds much more exiting than it is on a day to day base. But now with AI, things will get very interesting in the near future. Would be cool to combine AI with like new technologies in aerospace to make planes more efficient or so.

This video is right at the right time. I have exactly the same feeling . My background is in materials science and aerospace engineering and currently I am pursuing my master's in applied math while working fulltime in defense as a systems engineer , checking designs etc but after 6 months I started feeling 'boredom' and not interested . 9 months later I am looking to switch to software since I am tired of waiting for security clearance, not being able to work remotely, using excel ,doing documentation and rarely using the things I learned in university.. One thing you should know is that when you have to do with managers and project managers , forget about science and engineering, one thing is in their minds and that is money .

I am an aerospace engineer and hold a master's degree in Design & Manufacturing. Previously, I worked for an EV company, and now I am currently working in space research technology. Having experienced similar challenges to those you described, I appreciate how accurately you portrayed the life of an aerospace engineer. One common aspect I observe in mechanical/aerospace engineering is the rigid processes we adhere to. Due to the complexity of these domains, companies often lack the flexibility to innovate quickly. While aerospace engineering is an exciting field, it comes with high risks that inhibit companies from experimenting with standard procedures, leading to a somewhat monotonous job for engineers. I'm not opposed to these processes, as they require considerable effort to develop, but as an engineer, I often find myself lacking challenges in my work.

Hello, I am an independent game development engineer. I think it is a good advantage that you have a good academic background in aerospace. Programming itself is not very difficult. What matters is what product you need to build once you know how to program, and what product is successful or meaningful. Since you have an aviation background, making an aviation simulation might be a big advantage. As you can see, interstellar games such as No Man's Sky and EVE are very popular games. Expect you can make a fun software or game.

In my opinion, aerospace engineering has very limited job opportunities. Most employees do not hire new graduates today than as it used to be in the past. I related so much to your statement about access to data in your field, I'm a software developer in the industrial automation space tasked with programming and setting up all these industrial machines and systems that I have very little knowledge or expertise in and whenever I would so much as ask for clarification or a simple explanation on something, I'm directed to go through all these unbelievably annoying "procedures" just to get simple information from "domain experts" that would not only improve my implementation but also lead to improved system performance, efficiency and regulation. I sometimes get the feeling that the "engineers" at my workplace feel threatened by my skills and are intentionally trying to sabotage or make me quit. I have a computer science background and worked in finance before I segwayed into automation. I love my job but the rigidity of the people and near static nature of the field makes it almost unbearable at times. I know there are rules to be followed precisely and it demands flawless execution all the time, but I also know what I'm doing here, just help me do it better.

I've always wanted to be an engineer and be part of building some cool stuff. I realized now that I would be into the kind of math that is more on the continuous side than discrete, but I know it can be combined. Aerospace would be one of the best engineering jobs to have but it seems so specialized and few places to apply for. But since I got my degree in accounting I went ahead and did something math-y like the Masters Economics program with some math course pre-reqs already taken to make up for losing my chance at learning engineering. I did programming on the side, which is not the same as software engineering I know, but I regret not pursuing computer science even further back then. Hopefully I can combine what I've learnt and become a software engineer, aha. I've dabbled into supervised/unsupervised learning as an Econ major which is a subset of machine learning. So maybe I can even develop machines and robots without knowing the mechanics and physics.

I think that's the best of both worlds :) but based on my experience, it's not so easy to find the right job that combines both in the right way. Some jobs get the physics right but you work on archaic, outdated, frustrating technology, while others give you a lot of freedom on the software side but then you're so far removed from the application / physics that it feels like you're just a developer - e.g. you end up building websites or internal tools for engineers / scientists to use and they do the fun physics analysis, you're just writing react UIs.

Yes. Thanks for sharing your story. It's typical stories we hear every single day. Aerospace, mechanical, econ, EE, Nuclear, Physics, Nursing, Medicine... all switch to SWE. Coding bootcamps are flowering everywhere, everyone and their grandma is so FOMO about being SWE. While tech industries are actually selling hypes instead of real business value.... Aerospace engineers and doctors are competing with high school grads with "bootcamp degrees+github portfolio" for SWE positions. Now we see the result..... The market value of software engineers is crashing... The tech industry is also crumbling. The bubble has burst... And now even better, AI-Software engineer is coming....
